Chapter 577 An Uneasy Night

Chapter 577 An Uneasy Night

Olivia reacted super quickly. During the emergency treatment at the hospital, Chloe kept blaming Grace. Olivia understood what I meant - I didn't want Chloe and Bob to spend too much time alone together during this period. If they did, she might say anything.

"How about this," Olivia immediately said to Bob, "Jasper is still at Chloe's mom's place, and you need to pick him up. Plus, when you were on the phone at the hotel earlier, you didn't want Chloe's mom to know about this too soon. I think it's better to let Nolan stay and watch over her. We've hired a caregiver anyway. The worry is just that the first night might be busy. He's young, so pulling an all-nighter is no problem for him. If anything comes up, he can call. You should head back first."

Bob glanced at me and said a bit awkwardly, "How can I ask this of you? Nolan has school tomorrow too. Taking care of her all night..."

I quickly said, "It's fine, Vice President Smith. You go ahead. We're just reviewing stuff we've already learned anyway. Missing a few days won't be a problem."

Because we were worried about upsetting Chloe, after dinner, even though Grace came to the hospital with them, she didn't go upstairs and waited downstairs the whole time.

Hearing this, Amelia also said, "Vice President Smith, just let Nolan take care of her for tonight. I don't have class the day after tomorrow, so I can come help out tomorrow night too."

Bob didn't suspect anything between Chloe and me. He just felt it didn't seem right for him not to stay by Chloe's side on the first night.

Now that we all said this, Bob stopped insisting. He patted my shoulder and thanked me, then left the hospital since he needed to pick up Jasper urgently.

Amelia wanted to stay with me, but I was worried Chloe might suddenly wake up and go on and on about causing trouble for Grace, so I glanced at Olivia again.

Olivia immediately took Amelia's arm and pulled her toward the door while explaining that Chloe's current condition required good rest without outside disturbances.

Plus, since the accident happened with Grace, Grace was feeling bad too. Olivia suggested that Amelia go with her to keep Grace company.

I knew what Amelia was thinking - she just wanted to be with me, and would have loved to get intimate even in the hospital. But since Olivia insisted she leave, Amelia felt too awkward to say more and went with Olivia to keep Grace company.

The caregiver was a woman in her forties. Though she couldn't compare to city women, she was much more stylish and cleaner than actual rural women.

And you could tell she was quite sharp.

Throughout the whole night, she rarely bothered Chloe and me, sitting quietly on the cot beside us, leaving the other hospital bed for me to sleep on.

Every time she needed to change the IV, she would personally go to the nurses' station to call a nurse to avoid disturbing Chloe, not even pressing the bedside bell.

She was very alert whenever Chloe turned over, and helped Chloe use the bedpan twice during the night. She seemed quite competent.

Chloe woke up four or five times during the night, and each time before even opening her eyes, she would call my name first. Good thing I didn't let Bob stay, or it would have been more than just awkward.

After ten o'clock at night, figuring Grace couldn't sleep, I called her and spent a long time comforting her.

Grace kept sighing on the phone, deeply regretting what happened today, and kept asking if Chloe was still cursing her.

I told her to sleep peacefully, that I'd handle Chloe's situation, just that I probably couldn't come home for a few days, and she should take care of herself.

Chloe's IV drip continued until six the next morning. After the doctor made rounds at 8:30, they started another IV. Before the doctor's rounds, Bob had already arrived at the hospital.

Although Bob had already requested leave for me, he still wanted me to go home and rest. I told him I'd already arranged with Grace to stay at the hospital for a few days, and if he had things to do, he should go ahead.

Bob didn't suspect anything, thinking our family just wanted to curry favor with him. He felt a bit embarrassed and patted my shoulder saying, "Nolan, thanks for all your hard work. I'll always remember this."

After the doctor's rounds, Dylan and Grace came with flowers, the first friends to visit. They also prepared a gift for Chloe, but Chloe kept a gloomy face and wouldn't even look at Grace, making Grace extremely uncomfortable.

Bob noticed Chloe's mood was off, but just thought that since they went to the hospital together, Chloe was blaming Grace for not taking good care of her. He didn't realize Chloe suspected Grace of deliberately harming her.

Soon, school leaders and other teachers came to visit one after another. Some could only come at noon or evening. Everyone knew I was staying at the hospital, which saved a lot of unnecessary trouble - at least my advisor wouldn't nag me anymore.

When the other colleagues arrived, Grace immediately signaled Dylan to leave. Bob personally escorted them to the elevator, while I walked them all the way outside.

Grace was in a bad mood and looked terrible, and didn't say a word the whole way.

Dylan felt bad watching this and said to me, "Nolan, Grace told me that Chloe was pregnant with your child. Now that the baby is gone, you don't need to be too sad, and there's no need to stay here every day."

Oh my God!

This was a huge secret, and I didn't expect Grace to tell Dylan.

Seeing I seemed to blame Grace, Dylan explained, "I saw Grace looking so distracted, and she told me Chloe suspected Grace of deliberately harming her. I was confused, so I kept asking Grace about it."

I smiled awkwardly, "Dylan, I'm not staying for any other reason. Precisely because Chloe is narrow-minded and thinks Grace deliberately harmed her, I have to stay here and be with her through these first few days. That way, she won't have a chance to talk nonsense to Bob."

Dylan nodded, "You're right to think that way. You must convince her these next few days. Don't let her resent Grace. If she keeps talking nonsense, it could really be trouble."

"I know." Then I squeezed Grace's hand, "Don't worry, Grace. It'll be fine."

Grace seemed completely distracted, smiled weakly and nodded, also telling me to get some rest.

Just after seeing them off, Cecil called me. He said the student union was planning a big New Year's party - basically a variety show - and they wanted to have a meeting tonight to discuss the related work, hoping I could attend.

Considering this was a major event that would be good experience for me, I agreed right away. Taking an hour or two for a meeting in the evening shouldn't be a big problem.

I had just returned to the room when the visiting teachers gradually left. Bob then received a call from the traffic accident division, asking him to meet with the person responsible for the accident to see if both parties could settle the matter through negotiation.
