Chapter 21 Chapter Twenty-One
Chapter 21 Chapter Twenty-One
Brad and I make our way back into the apartment. The second I close the door behind us, Brad has a full on meltdown. "We need to leave, we need to get on a bus, a plane, a train, a boat or a freaking camel and ride the hell out of here. We need to leave now, grab the go bag and let's go." Brad rambles and I grab his shoulders, making him look directly in my eyes.
"Stop. Take a breath. Everything is going to be okay." I say, trying to calm him down.
Brad looks behind me at the door and then back at me. "Why would someone just show up out of nowhere and sabotage Jack's car that isn't even his car anymore?" Brad asks sounding so panicked I think he might hyperventilate.
I laugh, feeling a little scared, but trying to be strong for him. "You heard Jack, he pisses off a lot of people. I'm not sure how he has any exes to worry about because I mean look at him, but I'm sure it was just someone he pissed off."
"Well we pissed off someone too, someone very scary and dangerous. Someone that has a very strong desire to murder both of us. Mostly me, but I'm sure he wants to hurt you too now that you stole all his money and ran away with me." Brad starts rambling again and I don't know what else to say or do, so I just kiss him.
I kiss him hard, and not passionately at all, but it was the only way I could think of to make him calm down. I pull back and look at him.
"Listen to me. If my husband had found us he wouldn't have just messed with the car, if he knew where we lived he would have just killed us and been done. He wouldn't have messed with the car." I sound surprisingly convincing, especially since I'm just as scared as Brad.
Brad takes a deep breath, blowing it out slowly. "Yeah you are probably right, I'm just being crazy. I'm sorry, I panicked"
I laugh, rubbing his cheek with my hand. "It's okay. We are going to be okay. We have just been running for to long, it's an instinct now. We have to figure out how to relax, not everyone in the world is out to get us."
Brad laughs. "You're right baby." He leans in to kiss me and I smile.
"I love you Brad."
Brad smiles. "I love you too baby."
"Since we don't have a car until Jack can fix it for us, how about we just pop some popcorn and be lazy. We will leave the door locked, turn on some stupid movies and be couch potatoes today. How does that sound?" I ask.
Brad nods his head. "That sounds good baby, I will get the popcorn going. You pick the movie."
I nod my head and Brad makes his way into the kitchen. I flop down on the couch and flip through the new release movies. "How about a romantic comedy?" I ask Brad.
He pokes his head into the living room. "Sounds good."
I turn on some new rom com and Brad brings a bowl of popcorn, sitting down on the couch beside me. I grab a big handful and he gives me an excuse me who the hell do you think you are look. I burst out laughing.
Brad laughs too. "Damn girl, maybe I should have made two bowls."
"Just for that, I should take the whole damn bowl." I say, smacking his arm playfully and we both laugh.
Brad quirks an eyebrow at me. "You'll have to wrestle me for it."
"Don't tempt me."
Brad winks at me and I roll my eyes. I'm glad to see him relaxing. I don't want him to end up being stressed out all the time again. I don't like seeing him like that.
We watch three different movies and go through about four bowls of popcorn. Halfway through the fourth movie there is a knock on the door. Brad and I share a look. We don't really get any visitors or anything, and after everything that happened with the car I don't want to take any chances.
I pause the movie and make my way to the door. The person knocks again and I cautiously ask. "Who is it?"
There is a long pause and I start to get freaked out. "Makenzie, it's Jack. Are you guys home?"
I let out a breath of relief. Why did he take so damn long to answer me? I open the door slowly, looking behind him to make sure he is alone. "Hey Jack." I say when I see he is alone.
"I think I got your car fixed sweetheart. If you grab your key we can go make sure it starts." He says giving me one of his creepy smiles.
I guess he can only be nice for so long without being creepy. "Thanks Jack. I'll be out there in just a second. I just need to grab my key and put some shoes on."
"See you in a minute sweetheart." He says as he turns and walks away.
I turn to look at Brad and I can't tell if he is relieved or freaked out that it was Jack. "I'm going to go see if the car will start." I put some shoes on and go to grab the keys off the kitchen table.
"I'll come with you." Brad starts putting his shoes on and we make our way out to the car.
Jack is leaning against the car smiling like some kind of weirdo. I shake the keys in the air and Jack stands up straight. "Try to start it sweetie."
I get in the car and try to start it. It takes a couple tries but it starts up. I kill it and try to start it again. It starts right up. He fixed it. Jack actually fixed it. "Thank you so much for fixing the car Jack."
I was debating hugging him again but I'm not touching him when he's got his creeper eyes going all over my body. "No problem sweetheart. If you ever have any problems just let me know. I can usually fix just about anything. I may not look like it, but I have magic hands." He winks and I have to restrain myself from shuddering in disgust.
"I'll keep that in mind for next time. Thanks again Jack."
Brad smiles. "Yeah, thank you Jack. Seriously this means the world to us."
Jack smiles at him. "No problem." Jack walks off not saying anything else.
Once he is far enough away I turn to Brad and laugh. "I'm surprised he actually fixed it."
Brad laughs. "Me too."
"Hey, since we got the car running again would you want to go pick something to eat up with me? We can go to a fast food place. You know go through the drive through, pick up some burgers or something. What do you think?
