Chapter 22 Chapter Twenty-Two
Chapter 22 Chapter Twenty-Two
Brad makes a face, glancing back at our apartment, then back at me. "Yeah I guess so, but can we get some tacos instead of burgers."
I burst out laughing, rolling my eyes. "Sure, tacos sound good."
We get in the car, pulling out of the parking lot. "Where do you want to get tacos from?" I ask as we head into town.
I see Brad shrug out of the corner of my eye. "I don't know. You pick. You know I don't care where they come from, all tacos are good tacos."
I laugh. "I don't know about that, I'm sure there is crappy tacos somewhere, maybe you just haven't ever had any."
"I haven't had any so far. I will be very sad the day I find a place that sells crappy tacos." Brad sounds genuinely concerned about the possibility of someone selling awful tasting tacos and I can't help but laugh. He is so funny. I have never seen anyone so concerned about the possibility of having bad tacos.
I pass a couple of taco places and make my way to a place called Ben's Burritos. Brad looks around all crazy when I pull into the parking lot. "Hey, that sign says burritos, not tacos. There is a big difference between burritos and tacos." He says, looking over at me like I'm crazy.
"Don't worry they sell tacos here too. Ben's Tacos just doesn't flow as well as Ben's Burritos." I pat Brad's knee in a comforting way, and he narrows his eyes at me.
"Don't be a smart ass."
I laugh as I pull into the drive through. "I would never be a smart ass. I am to nice for that."
Brad scoffs. "Yeah right. I have seen you when it's that time of the month, you are not very damn nice at all."
I gasp, slapping his arm. "How dare you say that? I am super nice all the time. So if I do get grumpy once a month it's okay." I put emphasis on the word grumpy and he laughs.
"Mean, not grumpy. You get mean."
We both laugh hard and I roll down the car window as I pull up to the speaker. I'm sure they hear us laughing like a couple of crazy people because it takes a minute for them to say anything. "Welcome to Ben's Burritos, what can I get for you?"
I glance at their menu real quick and order the twenty four pack of tacos and two large drinks, mostly because Brad called me a smartass, but also because he can eat a lot of damn food. Not that it's a bad thing. I eat quite a bit too, I'm just glad he doesn't judge me.
We pull up to the first window and I give the young boy the money. He gives me my change and I pull up to the second window. The guy hands us our drinks and tells us it's going to be a couple minutes on the food.
He gives us our food and we thank him, pulling away from the drive through. Brad opens the box and looks inside. "Did you want to eat in the parking lot or go back to the apartment?" I ask laughing.
Brad pushes my arm, and I laugh again. "At the apartment, duh."
I burst out laughing. "Well I was just wondering because you looked like you were going to dig in right here in the car and you told me you hate eating in the car."
Brad huffs. "I do hate eating in the car, I was just checking to make sure they gave us all our tacos."
I laugh even harder. "You were counting the tacos?"
Brad laughs and his cheeks turn a little red. "Yes I was, don't judge me okay!"
"I'm not judging."
Brad playfully slaps my arm again. "You are being judgy. All I know is Ben's Burritos better have some damn good tacos or we are going to be making another trip to another taco place."
I laugh so hard tears start streaming down my face. I freaking love him so much. He is like a damn taco snob. "Okay. If these suck I will take you somewhere else."
"Damn right you will." He says it without laughing and I glance over at him wondering if he has a straight face. When he sees me looking he bursts out laughing.
We laugh the whole way home, we laugh so much my side hurts and my eyes won't stop watering. When we pull up outside of the apartment a kind of scary thought dawns on me. I don't think we locked the door earlier before we left.
For a second I debate asking Brad if he locked the door, but if he didn't and I did that would just cause him to panic. That is the last thing I need. So I don't say anything, instead I just get out of the car, put the key in my hand and walk up to the door like normal. I put the key in the door knob and I turn the door knob without twisting the key. The door opens.
I get hit with a rush of anxiety. Just what I was worried about. I didn't lock the door. Which isn't a big deal for most normal people but when you are on the run from a crazy Mafia boss that happens to be your husband, not locking your door is kind of terrifying.
Should I tell Brad? No, no I shouldn't because I am the one that didn't lock the door. It's not like someone broke in or anything. I will just casually look around and make sure nothing looks out of place. I'm sure nothing happened and I don't want Brad trying to leave again because he thinks someone has been inside our apartment.
We go inside and I quickly look around the living room, everything looks normal. I follow Brad into the kitchen and he puts the food down on the kitchen table. "You ready to eat babe?" He asks, grabbing two plates out of the cabinet.
"Umm yeah, give me just a minute. I am going to go tinkle really quick."
Brad laughs. "Okay, but don't be offended if I don't wait for you."
I roll my eyes. "You can eat, I won't hold a grudge or anything."
We both laugh and I hurry into the bathroom, everything looks good in there too. So I quickly step into our bedroom, everything looks good, but one of the dresser drawers is open. Which doesn't sound like a big deal, but Brad can't stand drawers or cabinets being open so we always make sure they are closed.
