Chapter 35 Chapter 35: Are You Free Next Weekend?
Sitting in the dining room, Estelle couldn’t see anything clearly. On the contrary, the man seemed to be quite used to the darkness.
Soon, the man came back with two bowls of chicken soup and sat down opposite her. The chicken soup was fragrant and smelled tempting.
It was the first time that Estelle had eaten in darkness.
“It tastes good,” The man complimented and took a few sips, “You’re really amazing at cooking.”
Estelle smiled shyly and said, “I learned it from an old maid in my family. She is a gardener, but she is good at cooking. All kinds of soup that she cooked were very delicious. Unfortunately, I can’t cook well like her. And the chicken soup cooked by me is not as delicious as the one she cooked.”
The man said gently, “The soup is very delicious. I like it very much.”
“Thank you, sir.”
“Do you know how many times you have said thank you to me?” The man asked.
Hearing that, Estelle was stunned.
She remembered that James had also said the same words to her when she was in the hospital.
“Sir, you...”
Is he James? This man is very mysterious and never allows me to see his face. I don’t know anything about him, but he knows everything about me. He even knew the cost of the medical fees that I needed to pay. He knows me so well. And he is about the same height and figure as James. But his voice is different from that of James.
“Well, let’s stop talking about this. Let’s talk about you,” The man changed the topic and said. “You didn’t go through the divorce procedures today?”
Estelle answered, “Yes... My ex-husband said that he had something urgent to deal with in his company today.”
The man asked, “Do you believe what he said?”
Estelle was rendered speechless.
“Having something to deal with in the company is the most common excuse given by men.”
Estelle asked in puzzlement, “Then why did he use such an excuse to delay the divorce? He wanted to divorce me very much before. And today, when I was on the way to the Court, he urged me to get there as soon as possible and was very impatient. But when I arrived there, he suddenly left.”
“He’s the only one that knows the reason,” The man said meaningfully.
Estelle’s mind was a mess.
Today, Cristofer suddenly said on the phone that he didn’t want to divorce her. He also said that he wouldn’t divorce her because he didn’t want her to live a happy life with another man.
Cristofer thinks too highly of me. I’m a single mother with two children and a patient who is in the advanced stage of lung cancer. No man will be willing to marry a woman like me, Estelle thought helplessly.
The moment I was diagnosed with advanced lung cancer, the countdown to my death began. Every second is precious to me, and I’m busy every day. How is it possible that I waste my time fooling around with another man?
“Is your mother feeling better these days?” The man asked.
“She’s much better,” Estelle stated. “Thank...”
She shut her mouth at once when she habitually wanted to say thank you again.
The man was amused by her and chuckled. “Sure enough.”
“What?” Estelle was puzzled.
“You are very similar to my old friend. She is very simple, lovely, and likable, just like you.”
Estelle asked curiously, “Sir, is your old friend... married?”
“Yes.”
Estelle then tried to persuade him, “You’ve got a long way to go in your future life. You must try to let go of the past. Since she is married, you must move on and start a new life. Sir, you are a good man. I believe you will meet a better woman who will love you.”
The man took a sip of chicken soup and said in a deep voice, “Are you comforting me?”
“I just don’t want you to live an unhappy life as I do. I’m stating the facts. As you know, I was not willing to give up on my husband before. In the past years, I’ve begged him and explained to him countless times, but I still can’t win his heart because he doesn’t love me. When a person doesn’t love you, whatever you do for them is meaningless.”
The man forced a smile and said, “You’re right. When a person doesn’t love you anymore, whatever you do for them will be in vain.”
“Yes,” Estelle agreed sadly, “So we’d better move on. We should cherish the people who are more important to us and spend more time with them when they need us, or else we will regret it when we lose them one day.”
The man knocked on her bowl with the spoon and said, “Have some soup. It’s getting cold.”
Estelle then realized that she couldn’t persuade him.
In the past, she was also so stubborn, thinking that she could win Cristofer’s heart again with her sincerity and love. However, the result was tremendously disappointing as Cristofer despised her.
She could see that the man was the same kind of person as her so she knew that he wouldn’t give up on the girl that he loved easily.
“Are you free next weekend?” The man suddenly asked.
After swallowing the chicken soup, Estelle raised her head and asked, “Sir, is there something you need me to do next weekend?”
“Go back to the Hudson’s House,” The man ordered.
“Sir, my Uncle is in charge of the Hudson family now. It’s meaningless for me to go back,” Estelle said with a hesitant look.
“Listen to me,” The man said calmly and firmly. “Estelle, go back home. I’ll help you take revenge on those who hurt you. I’ll make them pay for all that you have suffered.”
At the Hudson’s House.
Gretchen handed the gift that she had prepared for her mother, Melody, and said, “Mom, this is for you.”
Melody took the gift with a smile and said, “Thank you, Gretchen. By the way, when will you and Cristofer get married?”
Hearing her Mom’s words, Gretchen felt annoyed and said, “I don’t know.”
“You don’t know? Didn’t you say that he would marry you after Estelle died?”
“But Estelle hasn’t died. I heard that she had an operation in the hospital not long ago, and part of her diseased lung tissue was excised. She seems to be in good condition now. I’m afraid that she won’t die soon.”
Melody’s expression changed, and she said, “Don’t worry. She’s in the advanced stage of lung cancer and may die at any time. Let’s wait and see.”
“Mom,” Gretchen said, “There is something wrong with Cristofer recently. I think... he still loves Estelle.”
