CHAPTER 239
Two for one.
SCARLETT
Roman holds my hand as the doctor applies the gel to my belly. He is quietly squinting at the screen as if he understands anything there.
Soon, our baby’s strong heartbeat fills the room, and I smile, pleased with myself. I have been back for only a few days, and I already feel at peace. It helps that I am doing everything I can to not think about home, about what I left behind in New York, and the fact that Emiliano is still alive. We have pinpointed his location, and we have soldiers in place waiting for our go-ahead. We are just being very careful. We only get one more shot.
The doctor frowns, and I tense, “What is wrong?”
Roman holds me tighter, looking around, confused.
She presses the rod against my belly and looks closely at the screen. “I think …”
Immediately, we hear a second heartbeat, layered on the first.
My mouth falls open in shock, “No.”
“Is that …” Roman trails off, getting pale in the face.
“Yes. It seems you are having twins.” She announces with a smile.
My gaze locks onto Roman, and my head feels light. Shit. Shit. Twins. Two babies. Two babies. What? How am I supposed to handle two babies at the same time? How am I supposed to push them out? Do I need to push at the same time? Oh, crap.
“Are you sure?” Roman seems as scared as I am.
“Yes, I am very sure. Would you like to know their gender?” She asks, glancing at my face.
“No, no. I think I would like to take a walk now. Right now. Help me up, Roman.” I urge, heat spreading through me. I feel very overwhelmed, and my chest is getting tight. Twins. Shit. What do I do? How did I not see this coming? How was I supposed to see it coming?
“Calm down, baby. It’s okay. I’m right here.” Roman helps me up, and I nod, silent.
My brain is going into overdrive, and my pulse with it. Chill spreads through me, filling me to the brim. Roman holds my hand firmly and leads me out of the shrinking room. I exhale through my mouth when we step into the fresh air. Only then do I realise my hands are trembling.
“What are we supposed to, Roman?” I whisper, terrified.
“We will love our babies.” He assures me.
“But … but twins! One baby was enough to drive me insane, but two! How are we going to handle two babies? What if they’re hurt? What if I fall asleep while feeding them and hurt them? What if … what if I fail?” My chest grows tighter, and my knees weaken. “Oh, God, Roman, we have to stay alive. We have to be fine. We have to protect our babies. The world is so cruel and full of evil. We have to make sure our children are safe forever.”
“They will be safe. I promise you, Scarlett.” He pulls me into a big hug, and I hold on to him tightly.
He leads me to the bench under the orange tree, and I lean against him, catching my breath.
I look at him suspiciously. “How are you not freaking out?”
“Because you are doing enough of that for both of us.” He gives me a small smile.
“Come on, Rome. How are you not losing your mind right now?” I face him, running my eyes over his stunning face.
“I am.” He tells me softly. He takes my hand and places it on his pounding chest. I feel it beneath my palm, and oddly enough, it calms me because it reminds me that I am not alone in this. I will never be alone again. We are in this together, and that is comforting. Our children will have two parents who love them.
“You’ll be such a great dad.” I cup his cheeks tenderly.
“You think so?” He blinks at me, worry etched on his forehead.
“I know so.” I fold my legs under me, and he spreads his palm on my belly. “It is scary to think about because two children means two of everything, but there are two of us, so at least we are not outnumbered. I can already imagine what kind of Dad you’d be – the protective kind. I hope we have a daughter and a son, so I can see you bloom with them. You’ll teach our children how to fight. We’ll do school runs together. We’ll have a wonderful life, Rome, and this is just the beginning.”
“Will you be a stay-at-home Mom?” He frowns at me, even though he already knows the answer.
“I think I’ll go insane if I stay at home. I don’t mind doing that for the first two years of their lives as long as we do it together. You will work from home, and we must do it together. I don’t want to get consumed and wither away. I want to love our children, love you and love myself too.” I tell him seriously.
“And you will. I’ll do whatever you want me to do. I’ll quit my job if that is what you want. We have enough money after all.” He gives me a smug look, and I chuckle, “We will be fine.”
I lean into him, hearing our baby's heartbeat in my head. I place my palm over his, excited to meet our babies and start our lives together.
“We should probably think of names and find rooms for them, somewhere permanent,” I tell him.
“How about Penny for the girl?” He suggests, and I blink, “Penny?”
“Yeah, Penelope. Don’t you like it?”
“How long have you had that ready?” I narrow my gaze at him.
“We don’t have to use it if you don’t want us to, but it is a pretty name. I love the name Penelope, but I’ll love whatever else you choose.” He assures me, stroking my belly with his thumb.
“I think Penelope is a very good name.” I agree, smiling warmly. He is ready to be a parent, and so am I. We just have to solve the issue of the dark cloud hanging over our heads. It is time for Emiliano to die, and with him, everything must end so the rest of our lives can begin.
