CHAPTER 238
You are not going anywhere.
ROMAN
“So, if we find him, we can either give him up to the Feds and let them give their verdict? Or we can kill him ourselves?” I deduce, and laugh dryly.
Yeah, absolutely not.
I hear light footsteps and turn around to see Scarlett walking in with her friends.
“You should be in bed, eating, not standing, not stressing yourself.” I narrow my gaze at her.
She ignores my words, raises my shirt and stares at my bandages. Once she is fine with it, she takes the seat in front of me, and I stand behind her.
“Do we have to release the contents of the flash drive to the public? Do we have to hand over Emiliano to people who might seem clean at first but turn out to be corrupt? Do we really want to do that?” She asks, leaning into me.
“What do you suggest?” Liam asks her.
“We kill him. I’d do it myself if I could, but I can settle for watching him die. We kill him, burn his body until it is nothing but ashes, then we burn down my father’s house one last time. We demolish the tunnels, and we dismantle his operation. We put an end to him, and make it so that everyone who has ever known him, everyone who has ever worked for him, and eaten out of his plate will be dead. We erase every trace that he ever existed. We put an end to him for good.” She enunciates her words calmly.
All my fears and worries, of being different, of not being the man she fell in love with, all of it fades away at her words, at how certain she is, because there is something dark in her that matches mine. How could I have been blind to it all these while? It was always going to be.
“And the flashdrive?” Caleb frowns.
“It is mine, isn’t it?” She smiles sadly. “Dad gave it to me. He left it for me. We don’t have to involve the Feds and turn this into a circus. Where were the Feds when Emiliano was picking little boys from the streets? Where were they when he wanted to marry a fifteen-year-old? Where were the Feds when he killed my parents, when he killed Roman’s father, Luca and Adeline’s father? Where were they when he kidnapped Eve? We need to accept the truth that no one will be able to protect us as we can protect ourselves. Fuck the Feds.” She shrugs.
Mei chuckles, staring at her in amazement. “I like you, Scarlett. You’re fucking phenomenal.”
“Well, I try my best.” She giggles, face flushed with warmth. Her beauty truly is endless.
“Do you understand what going down this path means?” Liam steps forward.
“It means you get to the Don of the Mexican Cartel or what is left of it,” I answer.
He shakes his head, “I don’t want that.”
Luca smiles at him, “Do you really believe that? Once your father and his influences are gone, it will fall on you to rebuild from the ground up. You won’t do it alone – you have the La Cosa Nostra behind you, and The Traid, as well as Scarlett and Roman, who are an empire on their own. Do you understand, Liam? If the position is left vacant for too long, it will attract vermin, and I don’t know about you, but I am tired of wars. Our family is growing. Scarlett is having a baby, which changes everything. This is not about us anymore, but the future generation.”
“Our parents failed us.” Scarlett’s tone turns sour. “I could be angry at my father, but to what end? He was willing to let me marry Emiliano until he found out everything, but at a point, he was willing. He paid for it with his life. Our fathers failed us all; they made mistakes and left messes for us to clean. I don’t want that for my babies. I want to build a safe world, while having the semblance of normalcy. I may never return to New York again. Our home in the Bronx isn’t a place to raise a baby because of the ledge and all. We may stay here. We may move to Sicily tomorrow. It doesn’t matter where we are; all that matters is safety.”
“The safety of our family, of the generation coming from us. So, yeah, Liam, you are a Calderon, but you don’t have to be. You can be a Diaz, if you want to. I have always wanted a brother after all, and there is no one I’d trust more to continue my father’s legacy than you.” She smiles at him.
The entire room freezes at her words. The Mexican Cartel belongs to her, and now she is not just sharing it, but she is giving it to him, making him family.
“And when we marry, it will be a merger of our families. We will be strong, Liam. The Triad and the Cartel together for the first time. You will be making history.” Jun says tenderly.
“How am I supposed to step out of my father’s shadow? How am I supposed to rule the Cartels? Who would even choose to work for and with me?” Liam looks confused.
“Look around, Liam, you already have everything you need.” Adeline points out.
A computer beep,s and Bastian turns to it. I watch him curiously. He clicks on the screen, and Emiliano’s scarred face comes on. He has an eyepatch on. He is limping, walking with a stick.
“Found him,” Bastian informs us.
“Keep an eye on him,” I instruct coldly. “We will get r –”
“You’re not going.” Scarlett looks at me.
I raise my brow, confused. “What?”
“You are not going anywhere, Roman. In fact, no one is going to Mexico, not until we have ensured that it isn’t a trap, and even then, you are not. We are powerful in our own right, with strong soldiers and snipers at our disposal. Why would we go back there? Go back to hell? You are not going anywhere, Roman. You are going to stay with me here, and we will watch everything unravel from the cameras. You will instruct the team on what to do. You will guide them, and when the time is right, they will kill him. Until then, you are with me, so get comfortable, husband.” She tells me sharply, leaving no room for argument.
