CHAPTER 240
Emiliano Calderón.
ROMAN
“Mission report,” I ask, staring at the screen.
My entire body is wound tight with anticipation. This is it. This is the only chance we get.
It has taken us an extra week to get the perfect team, led by Vienna and Liam. Apart from the two of them, no one else on the team knows where we are, so if the mission gets compromised, our location won’t be. The chances of a compromised mission are very low. The week wasn’t spent only getting ready – we covered all the bases. There are four backup teams, ready to swoop in at the tiniest semblance of trouble, but I know there won’t be trouble. We have ex-marine, ex-navy and ex-seal on the team – men and women who are trained to kill and hurt. They are paid handsomely for their mission.
“Going in,” Vienna answers, voice firm. She is one of the toughest women I have ever met, and that is saying a lot because I have met many tough women, starting from my darling wife.
The control room is filled with our team. Scarlett is beside me, clutching a water bottle really tight. I keep looking at her, worried if she can stomach this, but I know better than to ask. She’s becoming more feisty, and according to the doctors and the books I’ve been reading, it is all part of carrying twins.
Liam stands on my right, watching the screen with focus. Adeline is with him. Mei and Jun are also in the room. Caleb is in a meeting, and I know for sure that he isn’t focusing on anything. He’ll be here soon.
“Remember, incapacitate.” I remind.
“Copy,” Vienna answers.
We see everything they see. Emiliano has some nerves. He is back in the mansion. How could he go back there? We initially thought it was a trap, a way to lure them in and hurt our team, but it is not a trap. He has just chosen a place to die.
“Soldiers spotted, three in the left wing and four in the right,” Vienna tells us.
Scarlett leans forward, “Soldiers? Which ones? Mercenaries or his previous men?” She glances at Bastian. “Give me eyes here, Bastian. I want to see everything.”
He nods, clicks on the screen, and we get the full picture.
“Tranquillise them, do not kill them. They used to work for my father's and are probably still with him because he has something on them. Focus on eliminating the mercenaries, preferably anyone with the tattoo.” She instructs sharply.
“Copy.”
The team does as she asks, and finally, they get to Emiliano’s office.
“He is surrounded. Should we engage?” Vienna asks impatiently.
“What is he doing? Just sitting?” Adeline frowns because this cannot be the end. Has he just given up the fight? Is he really about to die like this? After everything? Is he hoping they’d kill him with a gunshot wound to the head? That would be fucking mercy, and he doesn’t deserve a bit of mercy.
“Liam?” Luca calls, looking at the screen.
“I’m here.” He answers immediately, and we see him walk past Vienna.
Scarlett smiles when she sees him, and my mouth twitches in amusement. She likes him, and that is obvious with how she wants to give him her throne. I would never question her, especially when that throne has given her nothing but grief and heartache.
He walks into the office and leaves the door ajar.
“Just you?” Emiliano grunts, and my heart skips when I get a closer look at him. He looks a mess, as if he is rotting from within. I can only imagine the stench. He has an eyepatch on, but it is obvious his eyes weren’t treated properly, obvious from the blood stain on the patch. Staring at him, at the man who killed my father, Luca and Adeline’s, the man who took Scarlett’s parents, I feel nothing but disgust. To think I was ready to go to Mexico again, guns ablazing, when all he has become is a shadow of himself.
“Where are your friends, son? Did they leave you to die?” He turns around in his chair, and we see the grenade in his hand.
“Oh, no.” Jun gasps, and my blood runs cold.
“That fucking bastard!” Scarlett slams her hand on the desk angrily.
I stare at it. So, this is his plan: to die a coward’s death. Liam doesn’t look a bit afraid, and he shouldn’t. There are snipers on the roofs, ready to take the shot before he even dares to pull the pin.
“I thought you had some guts, Father, but I am not surprised. You’re a fucking coward, and now, you think you deserve to die this way? This easily?” Liam scoffs, stepping forward.
I touch a key on the computer, putting me in direct contact with the snipers on the roof. “Listen carefully before you take the shot,” I whisper coldly. “Shoot his hand in the next couple of seconds and watch before you do it. He must not pull the pin. I need him immobile and bleeding out slowly. The key is to bleed out slowly. Two hands and his knees. Do it now.”
Immediately, the silent gunshots go off.
Emiliano jerks in his seat, the grenade falling from his hands. He screams in agony as they cut out his movement, paralysing him.
“Did you really think I came alone, Father? You always said friends were weaknesses, but here I am, standing firmly because of my friends.” Liam steps closer to him, staring at his bleeding father. He kicks the grenade away, and I exhale slowly.
Scarlett takes my hand and holds it tight, placing her other hand on her belly. She is very nervous, and I just want this to be over.
“D … do you want my con … confession? Do you want me to tell you all I have done? Will that make you sleep better? Will that make you feel as if you are little Gods –”
“Kill him,” Adeline whispers, shoulders dropping.
I look at her and swallow dryly. She looks exhausted. In a way, we all are. This man has singlehandedly changed our lives and created a well of grief that will never be filled. He is right. His confessions won’t make us sleep better. It won’t bring back my father. It won’t change anything, but his death will.
“I am tired of hearing his stupid voice, so please kill him, and put a fucking end to this chaos.” She grunts, face flushed in anger.
Scarlett squeezes my hand and nods. I look at everyone, making sure I get their agreement.
“Take a step back, Liam.” I communicate through the comms, and he does that.
“Pull the trigger, Vienna., I order simply.
She steps into the room and shoots him between his eyes, killing him instantly.
A thick blanket of silence falls over the room, and it is almost stifling. Emiliano Calderon is dead, and it is our responsibility to deal with the bloody aftermath.
