Hazel sighed, she was very disheartened and angry at herself for speaking to Kalia like that yesterday when all she was trying to do was protect Carina.

“I'm going to see your aunt, I'll be back later.”

Lucian nodded after his mom left, he let out a huge sigh of relief.

“Something wrong?”

He turned when he heard Ava's voice. His lips lifted in a smile as he watched her walk towards him.

Her beautiful sundress, her perfectly even skin that looked like milk, her eyes that brimed so brightly it looked like there were literal flames in them, and that weird bracelet on her hand that always looked like it was out of place but still so cute.

When she got to him, she hugged him and he could feel the mate pull once again.

His mind eased,

'It was probably the stress.'

He thought to himself as he hugged her even more.

“You look amazing as always Ava.”

She let out a shy smile and gave him a peck on his cheeks.

“You are so kind Lucian.”

“Come, we should have breakfast.”

Ava nodded and followed him to the dining room.

Hazel soon got to the beta's mansion and as expected, Miguel had gone to work along with Kael, leaving just Dona pacing back and forth.

“Dona?”

She turned as soon as she heard Hazel's voice.

“Oh Dona.”

Hazel rushed over to hug her and Dona hugged her back.

Soon, they both sat in the living room, Dona looked disheartened.

“How could this happen to my baby Hazel? On her birthday, on the very day she was supposed to know how it feels to be loved by someone, she got a cold rejection.”

Hazel stayed silent for a while, her own thoughts also filling her head.

“This won't do, we need to go to the Vosses' home and speak to Derek ourselves.”

“Dona shook her head.

“What if Carina finds out? She will not like that.”

Hazel sighed with her eyes closed.

“Oh please Dona, the boy has already rejected her and he is Lucian's mate. The chances of them meeting on a personal note are slim.

We just need to know the reason why.”

Dona stayed silent for a while before she finally nodded.

“You know what, I think you're right.”

With that conclusion, they both got up and left for the Voss house.

When they got there, Mrs Voss rushed out.
It was a surprise and a privilege to have both the Luna and the beta's wife in her house unless… they were here because of something negative.

“My Luna,”

She bowed to Hazel and then to Dona.

“To what do I owe this pleasant visit?”

The look on both ladies' faces showed Mrs Voss that they were not here to exchange tea.

“Is your son in?”

Mrs Voss's heart was beating fast.
Yes, Derek was in but at that point, she almost wanted to lie and say he wasn't.

“Is… anything the matter my Luna?”

Hazel shook her head.

“Nothing you need to worry about Mrs Voss, we just need to speak to him briefly.”

Mrs Voss cleared her throat anxiously and nodded, ushering them into her home.

The Vosses were not doing so badly for themselves at all. They were a bit above average and Mr Voss was a well-respected man in the council of werewolves.

“I'll get him down here.”

Hazel nodded and she rushed upstairs to get Derek.

As soon as she opened the door, a very good-looking young man just the same age as Lucian came into view.
He was on his bed, reading a book with air buds in his ear.

Mrs Voss walked in and looked at him for a few seconds before going closer and hitting him hard on his back.

“Aww,”

He took off his buds and looked at his mom.

“What was that for?”

“We are about to find out.”

She said and dragged him downstairs.

When Derek got downstairs, he bowed, surprised to see the Luna and the lady in their house.

He turned to his mom, confused.

“What's going on?”

“We heard what happened between you and Carina.”

He turned back to Hazel who had just spoken but his brows creased in curiosity.

“What… could that possibly be?”

Hazel and Dona looked at each other, they couldn't tell if he was pretending or actually clueless.

“You rejected Carina as your mate on her eighteenth birthday.”

Mrs Voss gasped in shock. It was indeed true that Derek was yet to find his mate, but she did not know he would reject her the moment he found her.

“What did you do Derek?”

Derek suddenly went silent, not agreeing or disagreeing with the claims.

This made both Hazel and Dona believe that he was in fact her true mate.

“I did not come all this way to chastise you, I just want to know the reason. Why did you reject my daughter?”

Dona asked, pain evident in her voice.

Derek who had been silent all this while raised his head.

“Carina was indeed rejected on her eighteenth birthday, I would know, because I was there.

But I believe you should have this conversation with your daughter, not me.”

The way he spoke confused them, they could not conclude if it was him or someone else but one thing was certain, he had no plans of telling them anything more.

Soon, Hazel and Dona left.

Mrs Voss hit Derek hard on his back.

“How could you do that?”

Derek moved away from her as he tried to touch his back in pain.

“Could you please stop hitting me?”

She looked at him, angry at the fact that he ruined an opportunity that would literally elevate their family.

She might be the daughter of the beta, but she was equally as important as the daughter of the Luna.

“Quick, go after Carina and tell her you didn't mean it. There must still be some way to salvage this.”

Derek smiled.

“There is nothing to salvage mom, it was just a misunderstanding. Carina's mate is someone else, not me.”
