Chapter 29 CHAPTER 29
CAEL'S POV
“I still think you should do it now.”
“Shut your hole, Marcus!” I snapped, adjusting Sera's limp form.
“Sorry, just saying all of this can be easier. We can cancel the tickets. I'm not saying we're broke but the extra load all to… Okay, I should shut up now.”
“Good.”
I would have dropped her and twisted his neck.
I don't mind carrying two of them out of this forest myself.
“Let me go get the car,” he said and zoomed away while I continued walking normally so she doesn't wake up.
My body sang a sweet tune as she moved, doing things to me without even meaning to.
This addiction was unwise and I'll never admit it but Marcus was right.
I'm supposed to just get it over and done with but the more I think about it, the more difficult it becomes.
And then her wolf entered into the discussion and I've never wanted to protect someone this much before.
Not even my brother.
I knew it the second our eyes met that I would rather kill myself than finish this job.
It's why I'm taking her back to England.
Fabian has a better head on his head and will do it.
I'll probably not speak to him for another century or two afterwards but I knew it must be done.
Now that her wolf was here, the essence of her was pouring out.
Every inhale of her scent was making me weak.
If I weren't observant, I wouldn't notice it. It's so subtle and slow, but in a year or five, this exposure to the toxins pouring from her skin, I'll be dead.
We've never planned on a counter for the effect, only planned the death of the Dawnbringer.
Now that I'm in too deep, I wish we did.
We had centuries since the Great War and we could have come up with something.
Now I'm forced to choose between myself and her.
And just as the prophecy said, I'm dumb enough to think of choosing her.
Fabian will punch me so hard I'll probably regain my senses.
Hopefully.
He's not prone to violence, I'm the one desperate for blood.
I heard the car getting closer and then my nose picked up something.
A little too late because I was inhaling her scent.
Fuck.
“Marcus,” I muttered under my breath knowing he could hear me, “wolves. Lots of them.”
“I'm coming to grab her,” he growled, the car stopping in the middle of the road as the rest of the forest lit up with yellow and gray coloured eyes.
Shit.
The entire fucking Pack was out.
How did they know?
The first one stepped out of the tree line and bones cracked, hair gave way to skin and the Beta of the Pack was standing before me.
“Thank you for saving her, we can take it from here.”
They don't realise I'm what she was running from.
But there's still no peaceful way to get out of this one.
Wait…
“One of you tried to… force himself on her, I'm not giving her back.”
“Thank you for saving her, Kane is currently in a dungeon cell. Is she your mate? Why are you holding her like that?”
Another wolf, larger, black as night ran through the forest heading towards us.
The second I recognised those blue eyes, all thoughts of dialogue evaporated.
“Marcus! Catch!” I was about to throw her to him but I didn't see the female wolf jumping towards me and the second I went to throw her, fangs sank into my thighs and we all fell.
Sera included.
“Give me my niece you fucker. I knew there was something familiar about you, Blade of the Valkori court!”
“He's the one?” The beta gasped.
“Yes John, why do you think he moved here the second I got her back? He's all yours, I'm taking her home.”
Like hell!
I threw myself at her, fangs and claws out as she headed towards Sera who was having a nightmare.
Before I could get to the woman, the black wolf pounced on me.
The woman would have been an easy target but a Council wolf?
My claws dug into what I thought was his chest but I missed and he got his teeth into my arm.
Cracking it like biscuits.
A scream ripped out of my throat.
“We have to leave her!” Marcus yelled as he fought wolves that were chewing him up pretty badly.
As I pulled my mangled arm out of the wolf's mouth, I realised he was right.
Escape or die.
But my heart was pulling me in her direction, the pull so strong I nearly followed her.
But a dozen wolves were running after the lady who had taken her and more were trying to get a pound of my flesh.
“Arghhh!” I snarled, in painful realisation and wrath.
I ran, slashing at skin as I moved and Marcus followed.
The second we got into the car, he drove, silence filling the tense atmosphere.
If I could, I would literally cry.
I was going back to England, my first failure badge on my forehead and my body fighting to be back with her.
The thought of what was next filled my thoughts as I boarded the large bird that would take me back.
I don't know what to tell my brother, this is the one thing that would have ended every uprising he's facing and I failed.
Failed to bring her back, failed to kill her.
When we landed, the change in air only worsened my mood.
I still had no idea what to do or what to tell Fabian.
“I'll explain everything to him,” Marcus said, as if reading my mind.
“Thanks man,” I sighed.
“Anytime. You'll perish without me by the way.”
“Now you're getting dangerously close to madness.”
He chuckled but it fizzled away as my brother got out of the limo that was supposed to pick us up.
“Is he supposed to be coming to pick us up?” Marcus gasped, looking at me as if I could read my brother's mind.
“Gentlemen,” Fabian said, under his breath that only we could hear, “I've gotten unsavoury information about your mission from trusted sources.”
“You put someone on me?” I snarled.
“You were acting strangely. Don't twist your face that way, I was right. You got in too deep. But no matter, turn around, we're going back and this time, we'll take care of the problem together like old times.”
I swallowed.
And turned back towards the airport doors.
