Chapter 94
“It’s too early Gavin.”
“I know let’s go. I’ll call Jefe on the way.”
Gavin scoops her up off the floor and walks back into the house. “JAVIER. DAMIEN.”
They both come running in and see Gavin carrying Veronica to the front door. “La Jefa is in labor. We are taking her to the hospital now.”
They both nod and Javier grabs her bag by the door before they get her settled into the awaiting car. The hospital is almost an hour away so they know they need to get going and get her there quickly.
Gavin gets out his phone and calls Luis but he doesn’t answer. He calls him four times before he picks up.
“Gavin. What do-?” He is cut off as Veronica screams in pain.
“Get home now Jefe.”
“On my way.”
“Gavin, it’s too early. Please make sure they save the babies.”
“Veronica, you and them are going to be fine. I promise. You are going to be a mama again.”
She smiles but then screams again as another contraction hits her. She has tears running down her face and is squeezing Gavin’s hand as each contraction hits harder than the last. Javier is rubbing her shoulders and Damien is sitting behind her to support her back.
“They are coming really fast for just starting.” Javier says in a worried tone.
“How much farther?” Damien asks the driver.
“About 10 minutes.”
“Step on it. I think I feel the head.” Veronica says.
Javier and Gavin look at each other and pale.
“Just hold on Veronica. Please don’t make me deliver your baby.” Gavin pleads.
“Suck it up Gavin. I can’t stop this. I don’t know what’s going on.”
“Gavin, please call the hospital and find out what we should do.”
Javier nods and calls Dr. Brown. “He’s on Speaker.”
‘Someone needs to check if the head is out.’ Everyone looks to Gavin as he is in the position to do it without moving Veronica.
“Ugh fine.” Gavin says as he pulls up the hem of her dress he can see that her underwear is holding the baby’s head in. “Yes there is a head out but her underwear is holding it.”
‘You need to take her underwear off or rip them. Get that baby out now or it will suffocate.’
Gavin rips her underwear off and puts his hand under the head of the baby.
“Okay I am holding the head. Now what?”
‘You are going to lightly pull. Once the baby is out, do not disconnect the umbilical cord.’
Gavin nods and lightly pulls helping the baby out. Veronica is screaming in pain as she is pushing the baby out. Damien takes off his shirt to put the baby in.
Gavin gets the first baby out and it is screaming but it sounds like its gargling.
‘Hold the baby upside down facing down and rub it’s back lightly. It needs to get the fluid out of its nose and mouth.’
“We’re here.” The driver yells.
The back door opens to reveal Dr. Brown and several nurses. They cut the cord and take the baby immediately from Gavin to put it in a warmer and start clearing its airways.
“Jefa we have to get you out.” Dr. Brown says.
Javier and Damien hold her shoulders and Gavin holds her legs while holding her vagina to make sure the other baby does not come out while they are moving her.
Just as they set her on the bed Veronica screams again in pain and screams “I feel another head.”
She is screaming the entire time they are running down the hallway with her. They get her into the room where they are cleaning off the first baby and the doctor pulls up her dress to see that the head of the second baby is fully out too.
“Tiny push Jefa.”
Veronica screams as she pushes and the baby pops right out. Dr. Brown clears its nose and mouth and it screams. It’s only a few seconds before both babies are screaming.
Gavin hugs her across her shoulders. And Javier kisses her forehead.
“Oh no, Luis missed it. He is going to be so mad.” Veronica says as she breaks down in tears.
“Veronica. He will not be mad. I promise.” Javier says as he holds her in a tight hug.
“Doctor. Are our babies okay?”
“Yes they are perfectly healthy. I want them to stay in the incubator for now to warm them up but all their numbers look really good. You have a couple of strong babies.”
Veronica smiles and Javier hugs her shoulders again.
Just then Luis comes barging into the room followed by Octavio. He runs to Veronica. “Baby, I’m so sorry I got here as soon as I could. How are the contract-“
He is cut off by the cries of the babies.
He looks at Veronica and smiles before kissing her forehead. “I’m so sorry. I shouldn’t have left you. Please forgive me.”
“It’s okay. They surprised us all. Gavin had to deliver the first one in the car.”
Luis and Octavio shot a glance to Gavin and they both run to him and hugged him tight.
“Mommy would you like to hold your babies?” The nurse asks.
Veronica looks nervous buts nods.
“Wait, you haven’t held them yet?” Luis asks.
Veronica shakes her head and Javier put his hand on his shoulder. “She really had just delivered the second baby when you came in.”
“We haven’t even heard yet what they are.” Veronica says with a chuckle.
“Well do you want me to tell you or do you want to find out on your own?” Dr. Brown asks.
Luis and Veronica look at each other and say, “Tell us.”
“You have perfectly healthy babies. The first baby is a boy and the second one is a little girl. They are both beautiful.”
“Thank you doctor.” Luis says and goes to shake his hand.
“It’s my pleasure. Now don’t forget what I said they need to stay in the incubators for the next 24 hours but you can hold them for a little bit at a time and for feedings of course.”
Veronica nods and the doctor leaves the room.
Two nurses come over with two wrapped bundles and hand them to Veronica.
Veronica can’t help but cry tears of joy. Octavio kisses her forehead and then each of his siblings’.
“Thank you baby for giving me all three of these angels.” Luis says as he kisses her lips softly.
“Thank you for putting up with me.” Veronica says with a chuckle.
“I will ‘put up with you’ until death do us part baby.” Luis says as he smiles and kisses her on the lips again.
Veronica then scrunches up her face and doubles over in pain clinging to the babies. Luis takes the babies and a nurse puts them in the incubator.
“DOCTOR.” Octavio yells as he runs out of the room.
