Chapter thirty five
Chapter thirty five
The revelation left me a weeping mess fot two days. I could not sleep, eat nor do anything else. I could still see glimpses of my Daniel, ad our lives. I could still feel the love we felt for each for each other.
How could Drew take that away from me? How could he take away my life and my love? All because he thought I was his soulmate?
Why not ask me? Why not threaten me to accept him? I would have done that in a heartbeat if I knew Daniel was going to be killed. He could have threatened me, and I would have given in because I knew the man I loved would be safe and alive.
How would Drew be so heartless?
I still didn't have much recollection of my life before Drew made it his own, but I had enough to be convinced he was just a rotten apple that was going to infect others.
"Drew did all of that because he loved you, Leon. It was not entirely ego," Marianne said, thinking she assured me.
I kept quiet, not entertaining her stupid talks. How could someone kill because they were jealous? Why couldn't he talk to me like a normal person?
"Because he's not a normal person, Leon. You seem to forget that. Let me explain what happens when a vampire meets their Beloved for the first time. All they see is them, nothing else. We don't sleep and we can't dream. But the moment we see them, we start to dream. It's torture, Leon. The only way to end the torture is to approach your Beloved and have some kind of understanding with each other. Drew might have thought it a waste of time to court you properly and he just went in the only way he knew how.
"That's all that family ever knows. They are cruel, bitter and definitely heartless. They don't care for anyone but their own. Hell, they'd sacrifice their Coven for their own, the same Coven they would sacrifice their Beloveds for. They are a complicated bunch, but I believe Drew did what he did because of the bond. It's a very stressful thing to have if your Beloved is human."
Was I supposed to commend Drew now?
The thing I realised was that vampires stood up for each other. They saw humans as cattle and not as their equals. Drew never saw me as his equal.
"Leon, I'm tired of hearing your pitiful thoughts. I'm not defending Drew, it's just merely something I know because I'm also a vampire. You're an equal to Drew. He's never seen you as someone lesser to him. The moment it clicked you're his Beloved, you were his automatic equal. He's never seen you as something less."
She was right. Drew has never made me feel or question if we were equals, except now. Sometimes I said it out of spite when we were arguing about his family. You've never seen the man when his family was concerned.
If he had his ways, he would sacrifice me for his family. Oh, wait! That's what he's going to do!
I pulled the covers over myself, my back to Marianne. I didn't want to see her anymore. She was just a reminder of what Drew was. She may sweet talk me all she wants, but she's still a part of the problem. I knew she wanted me to do her dirty work. She was not just helping me realize what a snake Drew was. She had ulterior motives. I was not that stupid.
She sighed, patting my shoulder and then standing up. "You'll be leaving tomorrow. I don't want your husband sending a search party for you. He's already out of his mind."
When she left me to my own devices, my thoughts went to my fiance, Daniel.
I made up my mind to visit his family to get exactly what happened to him.
I was not going to leave things as they were. I deserved to know the whole story.
How could Drew do that to me? How could he do that to someone he claimed was his whole world?
I fell asleep to a sore throat and a tired mind.
When I woke up next, Marianne had brought a smoothie with her. She forced me to drink it as I couldn't walk properly when I went to the bathroom. I did not feel the hunger, but my body could.
"You need to pull yourself together before I erase our encounter. Otherwise, you'll be a depressed shit after I'm done with you. I need you sane. Understand? You don't want me to turn you into a mindless puppet, do you?"
Was I supposed to be scared?
"Ok then. You leave me no choice but to take your will away," she threatened.
That got a reaction out of me. I didn't want people messing with my will to do anything. Drew has already made a mess of it.
I took the smoothie from her, and slowly made myself drink it. My stomach hurt so bad, but I didn't let that get to me.
"Slow down or you'll throw up," she said.
I did as she said, giving her the empty glass after.
"And by the way, you'll not find any answers from anyone you know. Drew has made sure everyone who associated with you got a memory wipe. Your parents don't know anything about Daniel, and his parents won't know antthjng about you. He has been very thorough. You will not find anything. Don't dig around because you'll only make him suspicious."
I pulled the covers and wrapped them around myself, leaning my head against the headboard. "I won't."
She smiled, pleased. "Of course you won't. Before you leave, I have to wipe our encounter. But I'll leave you with the memories of Daniel, and the knowledge Drew is a vampire and the sacrifice. Of course, not forgetting that you have to kill him. I'll keep all these locked away from Drew's grabby hands. I'll put something like a censor that when you think about these things, Drew won't be aware. That's okay with you?"
Like I had a choice.
"Good choice," she said, patting my shoulder with a wicked smile. "That's not a wicked smile, Leon. I meant to be reassuring."
"Won't you get this over with?" I asked, my voice hoarse. I cleared my throat.
"I will, and you won't know. The next time you wake up, you'll be in your apartment. For now, rest. A troubled mind will just make Drew feral."
"Won't he know you did something to me?" I asked, wrapping my arms around myself tighter.
"He will, but he won't know who. Don't worry about these things, my darling. Let me worry about that."
I nodded, my mind so tired and body weak. I just wanted to go back to my place and rest.
When I go back, I'm going to quit my job. It's not worth it anymore. I'm not well mentally. I can't strain myself anymore.
