Chapter thirty four
Chapter thirty four
Marianne spent days telling me all I needed to know about vampires. She told me that garlic didn't keep them away. It was a myth. She said a stake to the heart worked, but only a few get killed by it because of their mind reading abilities. She said chopping heads also worked too.
I asked her if she could undo what Drew did to my memories. She said she couldn't because she's not the one who changed them. She said I'll get my memories and everything that was changed if Drew decided to give me my memories back, or if he died.
"Will you kill Drew?" she asked me, eyes hopeful.
I was shocked, shocked enough to say no. "I'm not killing Drew, Marianne. I've never killed anyone!"
"So you want him to kill you first? You're a dead man walking, Leon! Drew is going to kill you for the sacrifice! Its just a matter of when!"
"How will I kill him then? You lot can read minds! He'll know before I even think about it!"
"He won't kill you yet, Leon. The sacrifice works this way: You have to first be willing to be sacrificed for the greater good. Drew will firstly make sure you agree wholeheartedly for him to kill you. He might convince you to kill yourself, or feed you some other bullshit that you'll agree fo being killed. It doesn't matter what reason he convinves you to die, but you have to want to die. Then he will suck you dry, and just before you die, he will let the Coven feed off you. How cruel! He won't risk killing you aimlessly without sacrificing you.
"You can be a mindless puppet for now, but he won't kill you. Even if he knows you talked to me. He still won't kill you because you are far too valuable to waste. But cheer up, he loves you."
Was she mocking me?
"Of course not, darling. Merely making conversation. So, are you in? Are you going to kill him then?"
I still had a lot to think about, and decide.
I let Marianne give me space to think.
I knew it was stupid to not agree on the spot, but he was still my Drew at the end of the day. Even though I believed Marianne, I still never saw the side she painted Drew.
When she came back to ask for my answer, I told her, "I'll convince Drew to give my memories back. If what I find is what she told me, then I am going to kill him. I don't know how, but since I have insurance that Drew wouldn't waste a perfectly good sacrifice. I was safe, as safe as being married to a vampire was, I could work around butchering him.
He was not human, after all. It wouldn't be murder, right? It's only murder when it's the same species.
"What will kill him is also a Beloved's betrayal. He has to feel so betrayed that his heary would stop," she told me in addition to what would kill a vampire.
"And just for a sneak peak, I could lift a small portion of memories he took away," she said, making me frown.
"Didn't you say you couldn't do anythjng about my memories and only the vampire who took them can return them?"
"Oops! Kind of lied. Usually old and powerful vampires like me can override other Vampires spells. Only a portion, like two percent. I could still make a wild decision on which one I could let you see. It only works once on the affected person. Should we give it a try?"
"How do I know you won't just plant things in my head?"
She glared at me, snapping. "If I wanted to do that, I would have done it a long time ago. Hell, I could compel you right now to go kill that dog. But since I'm a fair person, I'm giving you a choice. So don't make me regret it."
What choice did I have if she threatened me?
"Do you want a portion of your memories or not?"
I nodded, giving her my hand she asked for.
I didn't feel anything when she began.
"I still don't feel any different," I told her.
"Be quiet. It's a delicate process. Be patient."
I was patient, but nothing was happening. The clock on the wall said it had been ten minutes since she started.
"Drew is a powerful vampire, and he's made sure to protect your mind from everyone else. Undoing what he did could take hours. So be quiet."
It took two hours to finally feel a change in myself. I could remember that I never knew Drew. In fact, I was engaged to my boyfriend of three years, Daniel Reys. He was killed like an animal on our three years anniversary. Then the next day, I met Drew. He must have changed my memories because all of a sudden, he was my best friend turned boyfriend. That's all Marianne showed me.
By the time she was finished, I was crying in grief. I was crying for the love I lost from Daniel. I could feel the love we felt for each other. I mourned for the time I couldn't mourn for Daniel because Drew planted things in my head that were not true. He made me forget Daniel.
"Did he kill him?" I asked Marianne, my voice so choked up.
Marianne looked down, not having the heart to admit that yes, Drew killed my fiance.
I turned to the other side, and cried for Daniel. How cruel can Drew be to kill my fiancé just because he wanted me for himself?
"I'm sorry, Leon. If I knew what awaited us, I wouldn't have let you see your past. I'm really sorry."
I shrugged her hand off when she rubbed circles on my back.
She sighed, then stood up. "I'll come back later. I'm really sorry, Leon."
Why was my life so complicated? Why couldn't I just be normal and not be bound to some lunatic vampire who wanted to sacrifice me?
I hated Drew so much for killing Daniel, and for making me forget Daniel like he was nothing.
Daniel was my fiance. I loved him very much.
