CHAPTER 114- DEAL
CHAPTER 114- DEAL
Asher sat calmly in the office. It was all white with a simple table and 3 chairs. There was a white water dispenser at the corner, and there was a tissue box on the table. On one of the walls was a large glass which looked like a mirror. Asher could see his reflection in it, but he couldn't see the other side. He assumed this was an interrogation room and that there were possibly some people on the other side who could see and possibly hear him.
He sat down as he waited quietly for his lawyer to get here. He was hoping he'd be quick, considering he didn't have his phone on. It was their protocol for him to either submit his phone at the entrance or have his phone turned off and left on the table. There was no way he was going to submit his phone, knowing they have the facility to hack into it, so he went for the other option.
After about twenty minutes of waiting, his lawyer burst into the room. He shook his hand.
"Have they asked you any questions yet?" his lawyer asked.
Asher shook his head. "I already told them I'd like to wait till my lawyer gets here, so I was just led here and left alone."
"Okay, that's good," his lawyer says.
Less than five minutes later, three men walked into the room. One of them took the last seat while the other stood firmly behind him. Asher could tell the two standing were probably of a lower grade level compared to the one seated.
"May we proceed as to why you've invited my client over here?" Asher's lawyer started the conversation.
"Sorry, but can you just give us a minute? We are still expecting one more person, the man sitting down said," and just then the door opened.
Kiya walked in. She was dressed in a well-tailored and well-ironed grey suit with matching pants; she had a pink inner and matching pink kitten heels. Her hair was packed in a sleek ponytail, and she had the lightest of make-up on, as though she was concealing something, probably the tears she had cried all morning.
Asher looked up and took in everything about her appearance. She looked absolutely different from the girl he called his girlfriend, but if anything, he found her even more beautiful and sexier. He hated himself for feeling like this towards a woman that practically lied to him about everything. His face hardened as he blurted out, "I don't want her here."
The man seating was about to protest, but Kiya interrupted him quickly, "It's fine, sir; I understand him. I can wait outside." She looked at him and gave him an apologetic look, but he just stared at her blankly. She stepped out, but he knew she was probably watching him from the other side of the glass.
The man sitting cleared his throat as he introduced himself, "I am agent Roe, and these are agents Lane and Scott."
Asher nodded, and he continued.
"We invited you here today because, as you already know by now, we've been investigating the disappearances of your ex-girlfriends, and we have come upon an interesting discovery."
Asher didn't say anything, as he expected his lawyer to handle whatever discovery they have, which he assumes isn't much; if not, they wouldn't have politely invited him over; they would have just arrested him if they had something concrete.
Agent Roe put down a laptop and turned it to face Asher and his lawyer and played the footage. It was the all-too-familiar footage that Asher just paid off that Agent Harry for. Had the dirty detective played him, he wondered. Had he blackmailed him, knowing the NBI already had the video? Because the only reason Asher even paid him was to make sure the video never got out.
"That piece of shit," Asher said under his breath. "I'm going to make him pay."
His lawyer cleared his throat as he said. "I see, but what has this got to do with the missing girls? From what we can see here, none of the girls are found in this footage; this footage was years ago and everything, I mean, most of what happened here was certainly an accident."
"Hmm," Agent Roe said, "Well, what happened to the girl here was certainly an accident, but everything that happened after wasn't. Not reporting it was a crime to begin with and covering it up is an even bigger crime."
"Yeah, sure, but my client was practically a minor. If this goes to court, he will get off easy, and you know that. So tell me, agent, why is he really here? What deal are you trying to cut with him?"
Like a child caught stealing a cookie, the agent's face looked like he had been caught, so Asher sat up straighter, wanting to hear what they wanted from him.
"We think your mother is responsible for the disappearances of your ex-girlfriends."
Asher's eyes widened; there was no way that's true.
"Listen, I don't know what Kiya has said about my mother, but that's impossible; she couldn't hurt a fly, and she might be strict and stern, but she wouldn't hurt another human being."
Asher's lawyer rested a hand on his shoulder as though to calm him down, and he stopped talking immediately.
"We need to see proof as to why you would think that. Certainly, the NBI must have some proof, but I'm sure the real reason you need my client here is that whatever proof you have is probably not tenable in court," the lawyer said.
"That's true," Agent Roe said, "and that's why we will appreciate Mr Smith's help to confront his mother and get a confession. We are going to lay down all the proof we have, and we hope you'll do the right thing and help us out here, and we will make sure this video doesn't get out."
