Chapter 82 Depending On The Lifeline

Chapter 82 Depending On The Lifeline
Kingston's POV

I couldn't look my daughter in the face or even depend on her to save me. I am definitely getting fucked up, and I can't do anything about it.

She's yet to speak, but I have envisioned myself rotting in prison. I screwed up finally. I saw how Amira spoke to me a while ago.

Her hate for me is real. The face of me irritates her right now. If there's a time she intends to punish me for being a deadbeat father, it's certainly now.

“Amira, are you there?” Sheriff Maurice waves at Amira to revive her lost soul.

It's been over ten minutes since he popped the question and Amira is yet to speak.

She kept on staring at me as though she were waiting for a signal. I whispered to her to protect me.

I wasn't sure if it was the right thing to do because deep down, I know I don't deserve a favour from her.

“I know you love your father so much but at the same time, justice must be served,” Sheriff Maurice comes yet again with another technique to get the truth from Amira.

He's more than just a cop. He's so good with words. The pressure is becoming too much for Amira to handle.

“Hey, let her be,” I was forced to step in.

I stood in front of Amira to protect her even though I knew it was illegal. I have been warned never to interrupt an ongoing investigation.

From the look of things, it's obvious that the sheriff will carry out his threat on me without a second thought.

“Mister Kingston, I need you to step away from this case now. I wasn't talking to you,” Sheriff confronted me.

He pulled out his gun and aimed at my legs, “I'm going to pull the trigger if you don't back off,”

I was cold. I could feel something leaving my body.

I needed no one to tell me fast that I needed to step away. I cannot risk getting shot in the legs over being arrested.

“My father is innocent,” I heard a very tiny voice.

It spoke so fast that I couldn't trace where it came from.

I focused my attention on Amira, “Was it your voice I just heard?”
I just needed to be sure if I wasn't hallucinating.

Never in this world did I ever imagine that Amira would still defend me after the horrible things she had heard about me.

She didn't respond to me. Rather, she chose to focus on Sheriff Maurice. “Lucas is a pathetic liar. He wants someone to go down with him. My father can't even hurt a fly,”

It's not a dream. It's fucking real. Amira just lied to defend me.

She is so unpredictable. I could have sworn that I was going to spend the rest of my life in jail.

Sheriff Maurice sighed. He was frustrated by Amira's response.

I am sure that's not what he wanted to hear. He was so sure that Amira would stab him in the back.

Not satisfied, he leaned forward to Amira. “Are you really sure about this? Are you pressured by your father to defend him?"

Immediately I heard the question, I lost my sparkle, “That's enough, Sheriff. You're crossing the line.”

“You wanted her to speak and she did. Can you please leave her the fuck alone now?”

“I see what you're doing, Kingston. But trust me, it's not over yet,” Kingston said to me in a flat tone.

His mood reeks of disappointment. I cared less.
I live for his tears.

“Go fuck yourself, Sheriff. You can rot in hell for all I care,”. I clapped back at him.

I said many nasty things to him to make him feel miserable. I've been wanting to do this for so long. I just had to be patient enough for Amira to speak before swinging into action.

“How dare you?” He leaned forward in an attempt to punch me in the face. Suddenly, he stopped and left his hand hanging in the air.

"Let's get the fuck out of here,” Mark advises as he aims to calm Sheriff Maurice's rage.

“We have a bigger case ahead of us with Lucas. Please keep in mind that he's still on the run,” Mark buttressed.

He just made a valid point. I am tempted to embrace him firmly to save my ass.

“Just pray we don't find Lucas. Because if we do, I'd ensure your stay in the prison is miserable,” he issued the last threat to me before ordering Mark to call the paramedics to come take away the corpse of the cop that was shot by Lucas.

That threat wasn't fake. I am not a fan of religious beliefs, but for tonight, I am willing to pray and hope that Lucas isn't caught.

But after a second thought, I realised that Lucas can still publish the evidence he has about me to the public even without the help of the police.

“Thank you,” I spoke calmly to Amira.

I barely moved my lips. I tried to hug her, but she shoved me away and headed for the car.

And Margaret? She awkwardly glared at me. I refuse to take her seriously. She is the least of my problems right now.

I joined Amira in the car. Some seconds later, Margaret showed up. The minute I saw her, I shut all the doors and left her stranded.

She walks over to the driver's seat, “What's the meaning of this madness?”

“What does it seem like to you? You're smart, aren't you? I expect you to figure it out,” I responded sarcastically.

“Why would you lock the doors on me? How do I get home from here?” She bemoaned.

“I don't give a fuck, Margaret!” I screamed at her.

“You should have thought of that before you chose to act like a nuisance out there. I don't wanna ever set my eyes on you ever again.” I told her bluntly. I was done being nice to her.

She is aware of my love for her. That explains why she treated me like a piece of shit at the slightest opportunity. She is so sure that I will come running to her after.

“Is this a joke?”
She scoffed.

“We are still married legally, remember?” She flaunted her wedding ring in my face.

Quite typical of Margaret. That's her counterattacking plan especially when we are discussing this.

Over the years, I would have fallen for her tricks and accepted her back in my life to mess me up completely.

But not any more! I've outgrown this phase. There's no way I'm letting her manipulate her ways into my life.

“I think I know what to do,” I cleared my throat.

Carefully, I removed my wedding ring and threw it at her, “I'm done with this shit called marriage,”

“And lastly before I leave,” I returned to the conversation after a thought swarmed across my mind. “My lawyer will be in touch to finalise the divorce procedure,”

“You have got to be kidding me, Kingston. Are you for real, or are you just pulling my legs?”Margaret asked for clarity.

None of this seems real to her. She is just shocked at how fast I've woken up from my slumber.

It took me several decades to regain my sanity. The signs were there before I got married to Margaret.

I was warned about what I was getting myself into. My late father never endorsed my marriage to Margaret. He threatened to disown me if I proceeded with it.

It wasn't just my father. My friends also advised me on different occasions.

But what did I do? I refuse to heed their advice. I don't just snub them, I cut them out of my life for good.

“You all are just jealous that I'm getting married while you are probably going to die single,” I mocked my friends.

I thought I was doing myself a favour. Now it just dawned on me that I have been a fool all along.

I'm pretty sure my father will be turning in his grave right now.

Should my friends find out about my divorce from Margaret, they won't hesitate to mock me because they literally saw the future.

Stupid me! I let myself be so intoxicated by love that I couldn't see the handwriting on the wall.

“If I see you close to the house, I'll get you arrested for trespassing,” I set the record straight.

“And as for your clothes and other stuff, you'd find them outside the gate,” I said to her.

I maintained the frown on my face just to make her understand that I meant everything I said.

“Amira, can you please talk to your father on my behalf?” Margaret turns to Amira to bail her out.

Trust Amira not to speak. All she did was stare at Margaret and shake her head in pity.

“Goodbye Maggie. I hope you do find love again with someone else,” I bid her farewell and drove off.

She couldn't even run after my car to stop. It's pretty clear that she has accepted her fate and that she's out of my life for good.
