Chapter 81 Naked Lies

Chapter 81 Naked Lies

Kingston's POV

“No way I'm letting you do that,” that's where I lost my patience.

I've been too lenient with Lucas for so long. He's winning the battle against me. I was right when I predicted that he'd buy Mark's conscience.

“Don't be fooled by his tricks. He wants to escape. You are not going to fold your arms and let that happen, are you?” I advised Mark and opened his eyes to the possibility of Lucas escaping.

It was so unfortunate that he wasn't even listening to me, even when I was standing next to him.

“How can I possibly escape from here? What do you think I am? A magician? Don't you get it? I'm already fucked up for life. I have accepted my fate,” Lucas goes the extra mile to defend himself while making me appear like a clown.

“Fine! For transparency, I need a cop to accompany me to the car while I go get the diary. Will that make you happy?” He brought up another suggestion.

As convinced as he's sounding, I still didn't trust Lucas. I had a feeling that he's up to something mischievous.

“What do you think, Sheriff?” Mark beckons to his superior to pass the final verdict. “Are you sure this is a good idea? If you ask me, I'd suggest we adopt it,”

If only Mark could just give me a chance to expose Lucas, he'd come to understand that I am telling the truth.

“Let's risk it all. Send someone to him. He dares not do anything stupid,” the Sheriff ordered.

And right before me, Mark assigned a male cop to accompany Lucas to the car.

“Be wary of him. That man over there is extremely dangerous to be even closer to him. He murdered his brother in cold blood and disposed of the body. He was on our trail tonight until we lost him,” Mark briefed the cop on what he would expect from Lucas.

“You killed Parker, your brother? Who the hell are you? Your father wasn't like this,” I bashed him. I wasn't even aware of this from the start.

“Oh, just shut the hell up man. Take my father's name out of your fucking mouth,” Lucas retaliated.

That was the last time I ever spoke about his father to avoid getting implicated.

Mark is so brainless to send a rookie cop after a ruthless man like Lucas. For someone who murdered his brother, he needs to be doubled up with five cops.

I don't believe this skinny looking nigga is capable enough of handling Lucas alone.

I didn't bother telling Mark about the right thing to do. The last time I tried, he didn't even consider me as a wise fellow.

And considering the drama that my family just put out here a while ago, I'd be the last person he would take seriously.

I watched closely as the cop edged towards Lucas. I can see the fear in his eyes.

The horrible things he heard about Lucas is scaring him that he couldn't even get closer to Lucas.

“What the fuck are you doing, Joe? Cling on him. I'm not expecting too much from you. Just fucking do the basics. He must not escape, else you'll lose your job” Mark yelled at Joe to revive his confidence.

I am sure he must regret entrusting such a huge task into the hands of a young cop.

I kept my hope alive even though I was still worried. We all paid rapid attention as Lucas opened the door of his car.

From a distance, he stretched his hand to pass the diary to Joe, “Take it and give it to your Sheriff. I am coming to answer his questions,”

But Joe was afraid. He has a feeling that Lucas might be up to something evil, and he would rather not become the victim.

“What are too waiting for? Go take it and let's get the fuck out if here,” it was sheriff Maurice speaking this time.

He must have been sick and tired of Joe's sluggishness. I am sure if he was meant to pick a cop for this task, he won't have considered Joe as an option.

“Copy that,” Joe responded to the Sheriff with a salute.

We all saw him approach Lucas with aggressiveness. And the next minute, there's a gunshot sound.

Neither, Joe and Lucas were nowhere to be found in the dark any more.

To our surprise, we noticed that Lucas was starting the car with plans of escaping.

“Shoot!” The sheriff alerted all the cops including Mark.

They all cocked their guns and were ready to shoot. But it wasn't enough to scare Lucas away as he drove out at full speed.

They kept shooting at him sporadically, but none of the bullets could  get a perfect target at Lucas or deflate his tyres.

“Go after him now. Ensure he doesn't escape,” Sheriff Maurice ordered his men as they went after Lucas immediately.

Poor Joe. He lost his life to something he knows nothing about.

“Are you happy now?” I berate Mark for not listening to me.

If only he had taken my advice very seriously, Lucas would have been cooling behind bars now. It's so unfortunate that he let his ego get the best of him.

He couldn't defend himself. He just went after Joe's lifeless body on the ground to pay his last respect while the Sheriff communicated with the cops to be updated on Lucas' arrest.

“Are you even listening to me right now? Aren't you going to apologise to me? I was right all along, wasn't I?” I yelled at the sheriff and nearly destroyed his ear drums in the process.

“Can you stop this fooling already?” The Sheriff fired back at me.

He pointed the gun in my head and promised to pull the trigger If I don't stop getting on his nerves.

“You should be ashamed of yourself, Mister Kingston. You're the reason your daughter was arrested, weren't you?” He accused me.

“Me? What did I do?” I tried to play smart while pretending not to know what he was talking about.

“What secret does Lucas have over you?” He probed me as though we were in the interrogation room.

“That's bulshit. I can't be doing this with you,” I hissed and walked away from him.

I was heading back to the car when he suddenly pulled me back, “Don't even dare walk away from me. I'd advise you to start talking,”

I was amazed at his actions towards me. I thought Mark was worse until I met sheriff Maurice.

I take back my words. Mark is not the deadliest cop alive, Sheriff Maurice is.

There's a way he blinks his eyes that's making me wanna pee in my pants.

“Trust me, I am innocent. Lucas was just bluffing,” I defended myself.

I didn't escape from Lucas only to end up with the Sheriff. Lucas might have stormed off, but I can still feel his presence in the body of Sheriff Maurice.

“Hold on a second,” he freed me a bit to summon Mark. “I need you to go fetch Amira. Let her know that her presence is needed here,”

“Okay, boss,” Mark nodded in respect before bowing out.

“What are you doing? Leave my daughter out of this. She's already traumatized. Don't add to her problems,” I struggled with the sheriff.

“Please talk to him, Margaret,” I pleaded with my wife to come through for me.

She ignored me. She acted like I didn't even exist to her. I was so disappointed.

I just seek help from the wrong person. I should have learned from my past mistakes.

I was a fool for believing that she has moved on from our last fight.
Her actions just shows that she's still holding on to her grudge and frustration against me.

It's me against the world. The same way it has been from the start.

I need to start learning how to depend on my individual brilliance. It's clear that no one is coming to save me.

My case got even worse when I saw Amira returning with a Mark.

The hate in her eyes says it all. If she had a knife in her possession, she would have stabbed me without hesitation.

“Why is she here?”
I tackled Sheriff Maurice.

“You're about to find out soon,” Sheriff Maurice avoided my question to focus more on Amira, “Now look into my eyes,”

Immediately he said that, I lost the zeal to defend myself. Maintaining eye contact is Amira's Weakness.
She hasn't been able to solve these challenges for a long time.

When she spoke to me about it, I disregarded her to prioritise my empire. That irrational decision I took years ago is about to cost me now.

“I need the truth from you. I know you're nothing like your parents,” Sheriff Maurice started by praising Amira.

He just met Amira for the first time, and he already studied all her lapses as though he has known her all his life.

“What did Lucas say to you? Did he tell you why you were kidnapped?” The sheriff unleashed the bombshell as he shook the table with his multi-million dollar question
