Chapter 80 Dirty Linen
Chapter 80 Dirty Linen
Kingston's POV
I salivated and stared at her like a dummy while she exposed our marital crisis in public.
I signalled her to stop talking but she missed it and kept on spilling more information that wasn't meant for public consumption.
I was so ashamed to even look at her in the face while she kept on scoring her points against me.
For once in my life, I lost all control over my home. I feel like a loser right now. I can't even defend myself any more.
“That's what I thought,” she scoffed after my failed response. “I knew you had nothing meaningful to say in your defence. Your emotional blackmail won't work on me this time.”
“I didn't back out due to fear. I would rather not tarnish my family's image. I got prestige,” I lied to Margaret with a stupid excuse. I just had to find an escape route.
“But wait a minute! Why are you so afraid to let Lucas speak if you're not doing anything evil?” She revived the old topic just when I thought she was willing to let go. She certainly doesn't know when to end a fight.
“Maggie, you're so smart. Damn it! How did you end up with someone like Kingston? Now I know why you two separated. You weren't meant for each other. You made the best decision by dumping his sorry ass,” Lucas heaped praises on Margaret as though she just won a gold medal at the Olympics.
He joined forces with Margaret to add to my woes. I always knew that he was rooting for Margaret all along.
“Dad, Mum is right on this,” I heard a female voice from close range. “My conscience will haunt me if I don't speak the truth,”
It's Amira speaking. Her involvement shocked me. I never thought she'd be this cruel towards me.
I risked my life to come rescue her from an everlasting torment and this is how he chose to repay my efforts.
“Even you?” I point to my chest in disbelief. “Are you aware of what you are saying?”
It's not a coincidence that Margaret and Amira are ganging up against me when we ought to stick together as one happy family.
“Don't you trust me any more? Do you realise that I am your father? If there's one person in the world that should bank on me, that should be you. You know I will never hurt a fly,“ I leaned forward to meet Amira.
I'm curious to know where I got it all wrong. I wouldn't mind her saying those words to my face again, and more fluently than she did the first time.
I cannot believe she will trust the words of a total stranger against her father. She was probably coerced by her mother to spill that rubbish against me.
“Trust you?” Amira sulked. “Don't crack me up, father. You don't even trust yourself,”
“I regretted having you as a father. You're the worst thing that has ever happened to me. I wish I were born in a different family. The sight of you irritates me,” Amira insulted the hell out of me.
What's my crime? I only asked if she trusted me. She also threatened to disown me when this was all over.
This isn't the Amira I know. I am pretty sure that Lucas must have poisoned her mind against me.
Even in her worst behaviour, Amira won't dare speak to me in that tone of voice.
Regardless of my strict form of parenting, Amira still gives me the respect I deserve.
“Amira, that's enough,” Margaret scolded Amira in my defence.
“How dare you speak to your father like that? Have you lost your respect for him? Regardless of what happened, he is still your father and should be treated as one,” Margaret scolded Amira again. Amira was just lucky not to get slapped in the face.
“Wait a minute! Is this really happening to me or am I dreaming?” I mumbled succinctly.
As much as I want to believe that Margaret has inherited my fight with Amira, I still believe there is more to this.
A while ago, Margaret was hell-bent on tormenting my life as though I stole something so important from me. Suddenly, she's fighting my battle like my guardian angel.
“Mum, please don't even start with me because you're not different from father,” Amira blasted Margaret.
This is the height of it all. My daughter is cloned. I am pretty sure I didn't raise no rascal.
“What kind of mother abandoned her daughter as a child?” Amira revisited the past to attack Margaret.
Margaret isn't the only blunt person here after all. Amira is truly her mother's daughter. No DNA needed.
“You're a disgrace to motherhood, Margaret. You don't deserve to be called a mother,” Amira launched another atomic bomb at Margaret.
She took the case so personally. Her outburst with Margaret shows that she hasn't forgiven Margaret for abandoning her as a child.
To worsen it, she addressed Margaret by her first name. This hasn't happened before.
I barely even addressed Margaret by her full name while we were married.
Amira used all she had to fight with Margaret. She didn't slow down a bit.
I was very tempted to intercede for Margaret. I had to stop when I recalled how Margaret treated me a while ago.
“How dare you, Amira? What spirit possessed your soul?” Margaret lost her cool and landed a punch on Amira's face.
She was about to hit Amira for a second time before I was forced to get involved.
“Let her go. You've done more than enough already. Do you wish to have her killed?” I pulled her away from Amira.
Margaret had no plans of stopping if it hadn't arrived on time to separate them.
My family is already fucked up. I would rather not make it even worse.
“Why did you stop her from hitting me? Is this the best she can do? I dare her to hit me again. That's what deadbeat mothers do,” Amira bragged. She still finds joy in chaos.
“Dad, you need to start asking Margaret some questions because I doubt if she's my biological mother. A cheating partner isn't trustworthy,” she crossed the line again.
Not even the slap can silence Amira's lips forever. She carried her chin as tiny tears dropped down her face.
And when she drifted her hands away, I saw the red blemishes on her chin.
“You know what? I don't regret abandoning you and your father many years ago. At first, I was. But now? I am proud of what I did. You got what you deserve,” Margaret switched back to her beast mode.
She disappointed me with that shitty attitude. I thought she was going to apologise.
“Margaret, stop complicating matters. I'd advise that you stop talking.” I tried to advise her, and she snubbed me. “Don't even try schooling me about advice because you need it more than me,”
I was affected by Amira's tears. It's such a shame that I can't even console her. She already sees me as a beast rather than her father.
“I don't want to have ever set my eyes on you ever again. I won't be responsible if anything happens to you. You disgust me,” Amira spat at her mother and headed down to the car.
I didn't bother running after her when I knew that she was never going to pay attention to me.
“That was great!” Lucas applauded us after the heat had died down.
I didn't let it get to my head when I noticed that his jerk was indirectly kicking me.
“Lucas, what do you have against Mister Kingston? We wanna hear it. We also want to know why you kidnapped his daughter,” One of the cops granted his consent for Lucas to speak.
He barely uttered a word since I got here. At some point, I was starting to think that he had had his vocal cords removed.
“No, this isn't happening. You don't know what you're doing,” I protested against the cops' decision.
I asked him to get Lucas arrested rather than making things easier for Lucas.
“One more word from you again and I'll be forced to get you arrested for disrupting an ongoing investigation,” he threatened me with a handcuff.
I had no option but to remain calm. He is more dangerous than Douglas, yet he's a cop.
He appears like one of those dreadful cops who don't forgive easily.
The odds are against me, and it's only natural that I apply a bit of intelligence.
I won't be surprised if the cops decide to abandon Lucas' case to focus on me.
“This is good. To be honest with you, this is the only time you've made sense to me, my friend. It strongly suggests that you still cherish our past, Mark,” Lucas teased him.
It's now making sense to me at this moment that Lucas and Mark were best of friends in the past.
That explains why Mark is taking sides with Lucas while portraying me as the bad person.
“Shut up and speak up, Lucas. I don't want to change my mind,” Mark shut Lucas up.
He wasn't interested in the jokes. He also claims to be doing his job. Lies from the pit of hell. He must think I'm a fool.
“The diary that contains the evidence is inside the car. I need your permission to go take it,” Lucas submitted his request.
