Chapter 135
Chapter 135
Matteo’s POV
People think calm means the absence of emotion.
They are wrong.
Calm is what happens when the storm inside you grows so violent that it turns silent.
After what I did with Serena I did not deserve to live. If this was the price for that mistake, I was ready to pay it.
I just wanted my death to be painful, and nothing could have hurt more than dying with the hands that I trusted the most.
The pain in my heart was too much to bear.
I have seen him grow in front of my eyes. I wanted to kill him for what he did to my Sera but the mere thought of it shook me to the core.
In the middle of everything, I just wanted Serena to be safe.
I already asked my men to take Serena to a safe place if something happened to me. I trusted them but Serena didn't let that happen.
The way she lunged forward and saved me proved that she still had something left in her heart for me. It ignited a hope in my heart and filled me with new energy.
When Kayden pulled her out and held the gun against Serena's temple, I lost it.
I would have forgiven his every sin but not this. He crossed his lines by kidnapping Sera. Alive or not, I will make sure he gets the punishment for what he did to my woman.
When I pounced on him, everything resurfaced. How he betrayed me, how he showed me as a cheater in front of Serena, how, because of him, I doubted her and tortured her. Everything. Every single thing.
I became the monster of her life when I was supposed to protect her.
I didn't panic earlier and handled the situation calmly because I knew Kayden loses his temper quickly. One wrong move from my side and I would have lost Serena and my baby.
At that time, moving cautiously and with the brain was more important than using power and force so I kept my breathing under control and face blank.
I didn't want Kayden to know my next step. But once I got my hands on him, I couldn't stop myself from beating the shit out of him.
I lost all control I had over myself. All I saw was red, years of betrayal, lies, manipulation, and the sight of Serena held at gunpoint replaying again and again in my mind.
I lost count of how many times my knuckles connected with bone. Blood smeared my hands, my shirt, and the ground beneath us.
During that moment, I even forgot about Serena's presence. I forgot about her condition and how overwhelming all this could get for her.
I didn't realise it until I heard her soft cry. A loud thud shifted my attention to her. Her name tore through my throat when she collapsed on the floor.
I immediately rushed to her and grabbed her in my arms.
“Sera,” I said urgently, cupping her face. I slapped her cheeks gently as panic clawed its way up my chest. “Sera, open your eyes. Please. Look at me.”
But she didn't respond.
Her head lolled against my chest. Her breathing was shallow and uneven. She was looking so pale and weak.
Oh God!
I just don't want to lose her or my baby.
Behind us, Kayden groaned in pain. Nick and the others had already restrained him, dragging him upright when he tried to stagger away.
"Take him to the basement of the warehouse. Tie him to the chair. Don't you touch him more than this. He is mine to take care of" I ordered.
"Yes, boss," Nick said as he quickly moved to follow my order.
Kayden was shouting from behind but I didn't give any heed to him. I lifted Serena in my arms and rushed to the car. The driver opened the door and I quickly slid inside, placing Serena's head comfortably on my lap.
"Take me to the nearest hospital" I ordered the driver.
The engine roared to life.
I held her the entire way, one hand gripping hers, the other resting protectively over her stomach as if I could shield them both by sheer will alone.
The moment I reached the hospital, she was taken away from my arms.
“Sir, please wait outside.”
I nodded and stepped back as the stretcher rolled away. My eyes stayed on her face until the doors closed, cutting her off from me completely.
Slowly, I flexed my fingers and realised they were stained with dried blood. I wiped it off with my pants but I wasn't done with him yet.
I walked back and forth. For now, I just wanted my baby and my woman to be safe. I was ready to do anything for it.
Every second of her being inside the room, felt like an eternity.
All this is my fault.
I should have taken better care of her when she was with him.
I didn't listen to her even once. I didn't trust her.
My hands shot up to my head as I pulled my hair harder. It felt like my brain nerves would burst anytime.
I won't be able to forgive myself if anything happens to the baby. Hell, how would I show my face to her? She did everything to keep the baby safe.
I had faced bullets without flinching. I had buried men without losing sleep.
But this?
This was destroying me.
Serena didn't deserve a thing she has gone through in all these years. Her only mistake was loving me. She loved me selflessly, she cared for Kayden with pure intentions, but in return, all she got was pain.
God, please. Just give me one chance to prove myself to her.
I want to give her all the love. I will do as she says. I will burn myself alive if this is what she wants.
Just keep her and my baby safe.
Suddenly I froze at my place when the door opened.
A doctor stepped out with a mask pulled down around his neck. His expressions were serious but not panicked.
"How is she?" I asked quickly without wasting a single second.
“She is stable,” he said
I let out the breath that I was holding all this time. The tension in my chest loosened slightly.
“But,” he continued, and my body went rigid again, “her blood pressure spiked dangerously high when she was brought in. It looked like stress-induced hypertension. It’s under control for now, but it’s not something we are taking lightly.”
I nodded slowly. It was quite obvious after everything she went through. She was still strong enough to handle everything bravely.
The only thought that pushed her to fight was that of her baby. My heart thudded in my chest when I thought about it. My knees wobbled once again. I didn't have the strength to hear anything negative.
I swallowed, shifted on my feet, and licked my lips. The doctor read my body language but didn't say anything.
I let out a deep breath before gathering the courage to ask, "What about the baby? How is it?"
