Chapter 57

Ambrose POV.

"Pardon me!?"

Mrs. Meyers went on her knees and pushed her hands forward on the tiled floor. What was she sorry for?

"My King, Nedra would like to see you in your office."

" If that was the case, why are you on the floor?" I asked.

Why would she kneel on a dirty floor to apologize? I didn't comprehend completely what was transpiring but I knew I was missing some key information.

" I should have done better" she began " I will accept any punishment bestowed by your parents for my failure."

What the hell was happening? I was missing something. The whole explanation.

" Get on your feet and explain to me, exactly what you did wrong."

She slowly stood up; it was taking ages, but I understood because of her old age. Mrs. Meyers has been with me for as long as I could remember. She comforted me when I was young and was my only playmate. Being the heir of a kingdom might sound cool to others, but I hated it. I had no freedom at all to try the things I wanted. All my days were filled with lessons. I couldn't socialize with just anyone. My playmates had to be children from noble residences.

I hated them. They always sucked up to me because they knew I would be King one day. All their giggles and smiles were fake. Something they were told to do by their parents. Even when playing games, no one would dare win against me since I was a prince. Winning every time became annoying fast, as I knew that they weren't even trying. I was a child, I wanted to have fun and not spend my time with people who had no interest in me.

When I was in my teens, I met Sir Stanley. His father happened to be my father's military general, so he spent some time in the castle. Left to our own devices we bonded and became friends. Unlike the other people I had met, Stanley had no reason to hold back, he kicked my ass in most things until I had to work harder. This was the kind of friendship I needed. Someone to push me forward. Not people who will clap for me while I accomplished nothing.

Around that time, I met another child by the name of Noah. From the first day I met him, I didn't care for him. He walked around with his nose in the air like he was more important than everyone else. He used to boss my servants around and punish them for no reason. His behavior seemed to aggravate the hell out of me until I complained to my father. I didn't like him, and I didn't want him around me.

I don't know what happened after, but he stopped coming around. To my servants and my relief, my father had found a reason to stop his visits. It was quiet for a while until I received a letter that insulted me, saying I was only powerful because I came from a powerful family. Otherwise, I had nothing to be proud of. I couldn't prove it until now, but I knew the letter was from him. He was too ambitious for his age. I also didn't like how he looked at my female servants.

I heard reports of rape from some servants who work in his household. They claimed they reported his behavior, but he remained punished. He ended up killing the poor girls he raped to get rid of the evidence. Everyone was aware of his character; he was ruthless, uncouth, and too ambitious for his own good. When my father was murdered he and his father started a smear campaign to kill the traitor and his entire family. But I stopped them since I didn't see the need to punish innocent family members.

Since then, I have grown weary of him, his friends, and his family. Now you understand why I didn't want to have anything to do with Nedra. She was Noah's sister, and she was their last attempt to acquire more power in court. I kept the arrangement pending because it helped me get rid of girls who kept latching on my back and kept my enemies closer.

I promised myself to keep the arrangement pending until I found a nice girl to marry. Now that I have found the perfect person, I would be damned if I let her go. Nalani was everything a queen should be and what she should stand for. The mere fact that she could easily defend herself against anyone was an added advantage. I knew she was holding back, even now. If she wanted to leave, no one could stop her, not even me.

"Your Highness, please this is important," Mrs. Meyers said.

Every time I think of Nalani, my thoughts end up taking over and I forget everything else.

"Let's go," I said heading to my office.

What was so important was that Mrs. Meyers was so worried. I could hear her light steps as she followed closely behind. I always wondered why all the servant's steps were so soft and silent, if you didn't pay too much attention to them, you might be scared every time they were in front of you. I opened the door to my office roughly, making the people inside jump like they were doing something wrong. I walked to my desk and leaned on the edge, while Mrs. Meyers walked in and closed the door behind her.

Inside my sacred office that no one was allowed to enter when I was not around were, Nedra, Stanley, and a maid I didn't know.

"Who allowed you to come into my office?" I asked, my voice was filled with annoyance.

" Mrs. Meyers let us in" Nedra answered.

She smiled at me sweetly, trying to gain my attention but I wanted to puke every time I saw her. She was the definition of pretty on the outside but dark, twisted, and evil on the inside. Doesn't she know when she's not wanted? Why does she keep trying to force her place beside me? Even if the world was ending, she would be the last person I would want to see.
