Chapter 58.

Ambrose POV.

I moved away from my desk and relaxed on my chair behind the desk. An explanation should have been given by now, but no one was speaking. Sir Stanley's face was etched with worry and uneasiness. He kept sneaking glances at Nedra who seemed to have the lot in her palm.

Nedra on the other hand stood confidently, arms on her chest like someone who had the upper hand in this situation. She knew something I didn't, and it somehow unnerved me. Mrs. Meyers was trying to make herself as small as possible. The three of them knew something I didn't.

The room was cloaked in a heavy silence, each breath echoing louder than normal. Tension hung thick in the air, palpable enough to feel on the skin. Every gaze held a hint of uncertainty, eyes darting around nervously as if seeking an exit from the unspoken turmoil that suffocated the atmosphere.

The faint tapping on the desk sounded like a countdown to an unknown resolution, intensifying the already dense feeling of apprehension. I waited for any of them to say something but they remained silent. This began to aggravate me since I had a lot on my mind and I needed time to sort it out. I hit my palm on the table causing them to jump.

" If no one will speak, please get out. I have things to do, other than exchange looks with you."

Sir Stanley jumped into action and hurried to my side.

" Your Highness, I will deal with this matter personally. You have nothing to worry about " he said.

What matter was he speaking about? How could I let him deal with something I was not aware of?

" You can't keep His Highness in the dark, especially about this" stated Nedra.

I was intrigued. This matter must be something that affected me directly. Otherwise, one wouldn't be trying to hide it while the other was dying to tell me. And the last one had one foot out of the door trying to run away amidst the chaos. It seemed I was to be the topic of their discussion and yet I knew none of it.

"Will any of you tell me what is going on or will you keep bickering in front of me?"

"Sorry, your Highness" they spoke together.

"Now, one at a time. Sir Stanley, what is going on?" I asked turning my attention towards him.

He turned to glance at Mrs. Meyers, then Nedra who seemed to spot a smirk.

"Your Highness, Nalani seems to be from a questionable background " he stated.

Nalani? What questionable background was he talking about?

"Isn't Nalani a servant who came from the streets?" I asked, my eyebrows crunching together.

Anytime Nalani was mentioned I always felt on edge. Like I could lose every control I had in a split second.

"She is certainly not from the streets" he muttered.

"Oh My God! How long are you going to spare his feelings" Nedra spat.

"Can you both speak a language I can understand!"

Something wasn't right, I could feel it in my bones. Fear, an emotion I rarely experienced unless it was related to Nalani took over my body. Fear, my old friend. A chill settled on me as I watched the three squirm under my glare.

"Nalani is from a noble background. She is supposed to be a lady" Mrs. Meyers interjected.

Nalani was from a noble family. No way! But how could I miss it? Suddenly I recalled everything I found strange but decided to ignore it. The way she walked, talked, sat, and treated others was so familiar yet unfamiliar at the same time. The first time I saw her walk, I was convinced she was a lady but then she did something a lady would never do, argue with me, and I brushed the thought away.

So I was right after all. She was a noble lady. That made our marriage so much easier to proceed. So why were these people not happy with the news?

"If she is from a noble family, why are you not happy?"

At this point Sir Stanley was uncomfortable. He knew how much I favored Nalani, so he was scared to say it. Since he won't say it I looked at the only person who could without sparing my feelings.

"She is from a noble family, but her father was sentenced to death for being a traitor. She is a traitor's daughter" Nedra explained.

Huh! I started linking the dots and damnit!

"Her father was Sir Maximus .You ordered his beheading when you became King" Mrs Meyers spoke.

She was Sir Maximus's daughter. The man responsible for my father's death. A ringing sound filled my ears. It was so loud that I hit my ears to make it stop.

" Your Highness please stop."

I heard someone cry. I felt strong hands grab my hands to stop me from hitting my head. All my resolve seemed to disappear. I was in love with a traitor's daughter. My heart broke into tiny pieces when I imagined all the personal things and moments I had shared with her.

I couldn't believe it. I didn't want to believe it but the truth was right in front of me. The truth of her background was staring at me but I didn't want to believe it. I wanted to believe her so badly, I needed to believe her.

My hands started trembling. If Sir Stanley wasn't holding them up, they would have hit my desk. Suddenly my thoughts were too loud. When she said she didn't love me, she meant it. I was too blind to see what was right in front of me.

I was an idiot to believe she loved me for who I was. Turns out she didn't love me at all. I killed her father and ruined her life. She must have hated me with her entire being. My eyes started twitching when I imagined how she took me for a fool.

" Release me!" I commanded.

Sir Stanley immediately released my hands and fell on his knees. I stood abruptly, causing my unstable chair to fall loudly.

" Tell me everything!" I commanded

I didn't care who told me, I needed to know everything before I faced her.

Nalani.

How could you do this to me?
