Chapter 56.
Ambrose POV
"The reason I don't want to be your queen is because I don't love you!"
My jaw dropped and my heart sank to my stomach. She doesn't love me. How could that be possible? I knew she loved me; I could feel it deep in my bones.
"You are lying!"
"No, I am not" her tone harsh.
Her voice was so cold that it made me feel like I was freezing. Who was this Nalani standing next to me? I couldn't recognize the woman I was in love with.
"I can tell when someone is in love with me, Nalani" I insisted.
"Ha!" she laughed.
How dare she laugh at me? If she was trying to get me angry, it was working.
"I have never loved you. But using you? That I am guilty of" she smirked.
I pride myself on being able to read people's minds and get to know them better. They might lie but their actions can't. This was the main reason why I didn't believe Nalani's words. She was lying. However, that didn't stop my heart from breaking. The words she uttered even though they were lies, hurt. They cut through my wretched heart. She was the only person I willingly gave the power to hurt me.
"I don't know why you insist on lying to me but I'm not wrong " I insisted.
"I used you, Ambrose. Every second I was next to you, I was lying. How could I not when your presence alone disgusts me?" she spat.
" I disgust you huh!"
I closed the distance between us, grabbed her arm, and pushed her to the wall. I plastered my body on hers, grabbed a handful of her curly hair, and forced my mouth on hers. I bit her lip when she refused me causing her to gasp. I took the opportunity to deepen our kiss. By the time I moved away, she was panting beside me. I had achieved my goal, the kiss had affected her. I put some distance between us before I scanned her again.
Her hair was a mess, she was panting, and a deep blush was on her cheeks. Disgusted my foot. She was lying again. What did she gain from all the lies she spattered today?
"That doesn't look like someone disgusted to me."
She glared at me. If looks could kill, I would be buried by now. I didn't understand where all this hostility was coming from. Last week we were holding hands and making love. Today she wanted me dead. How can a person change so much in such little time?
"Nalani," I tried speaking in a softer tone.
I tried walking towards her, but she moved away. If only I could touch her, then I could show her I didn't mean any harm. When I took another step towards her, she took a ceramic vase that was close to her and raised it above her head.
"If you come any closer, I will hurl this at you" she threatened.
Judging from her wild eyes, she was serious.
"Fine. Fine," I raised my hands in defeat.
"You can't keep me here forever!" she screamed.
So that is what all this is about. She wanted her freedom. Did she go insane from staying indoors for too long? I only did this for my benefit. I agree it was greedy of me to want her to stay even when I had a fiancée. But she didn't understand the situation I was in. How could she want to leave a man she was supposedly in love with?
I have never been in love before in my life. Nalani was the first woman I met who didn't have an agenda. All the women I have met, have wanted some from me. power, wealth, position. It's always the same old things. I could see the greed in their eyes when they spoke to me. But Nalani was different. She didn't like me, and she showed it. I ignored all the glares she used to give me every day.
At some point, I longed for her glares. I didn't know when my teasing turned into love. Maybe when she fell asleep doing her punishment. Or when she fell sick doing her duties. At some point, I stopped teasing out of fun and started looking forward to spending time with her. Although she feared me, it didn't stop her from speaking her mind. I didn't want a pretty Queen who had nothing else to offer apart from her looks.
I wanted Nalani.
She was the Queen I had chosen, and I will never willingly let her go. She had everything I wanted and more. She was born to be Queen.
I could give her everything she would ever want. Land, power, respect, love. I was prepared to make her the most envied lady in the Kingdom. However, it seems like we had different plans. While I wanted to give her everything I had, she wanted to leave my side. I never implied I was a good person. But I tried to consider her feelings.
Nonetheless, my decision has been made and I will not change it. She will become the Queen of Vigor, whether she likes it or not. Maybe after some time, she will come to see I was not her enemy but a man who loved her wholeheartedly.
"You will not leave this room until you are Queen!"
I instantly left her room. Before the door could properly close, she threw the vase as she had promised, and the loud crash startled everyone. The knights outside wanted to go in, but I stopped them. She was on edge. If anyone walked in there with any sort of weapon, she would use it to escape. Why did she appear to hate me so much? I was pleased she was alive and hadn't resulted in doing anything stupid, but my visit ended up only raising my fears.
I started walking aimlessly without a destination in mind. However, the peace didn't last long.
" Your Highness, " Mrs. Meyers called.
I stopped and turned to face her.
"What is it?" I asked.
"I'm truly sorry. "
