Chapter 148 Incense of Worry

Chapter 148 Incense of Worry
Chapter 148. Incense of Worry

Sylvia's pov.

No!! No!!!

It couldn't have been, I laughed out of the sofa and began pacing around the room, the more I thought about it, the more ridiculous it sounded.

“There's no way Dr Maksim would be responsible for this.”

Ezekiel chuckled, “And why not? Because you worked for him, suddenly you know him so well that you trust him?”

I ran a hand through my hair, “It's not like that, it's just…”

“Just what??”

Eyes raised to the ceiling as I delved deep in thought with Ezekiel's voice of reasoning in the background.

“His arrival and he already implemented a routine checkup which no one could have been exempted from, why? What was he looking for?”

No matter how much I didn't want to believe Ezekiel, the lines of my beliefs in Dr Maksim began to blur, “He's a good man, he wouldn't do something like this, I mean, why would he even do something like this, he doesn't even know about us.”

Ezekiel interjected in my rant, “He doesn't know about you! That doesn't mean he doesn't know about our existence, tell me, what did he have you working on, what was the purpose of this position he had given you that makes you think he's a good person?”

At that moment, Dr Maksim's dreams and hopes began replaying in my mind, “He said he wished to create a cure for illnesses that were once fatal, he plans of giving hope to those who had lost it, those who have been told by their doctors that they couldn't make it,” I stuttered as a pool of sweat gathered in my forehead.

“A man like that wouldn't start going off poisoning people.”

“...poisoning werewolves!!” Ezekiel corrected, "Humans are just fine,” he said more detestfully.

My breathing was heavy as I ran a hand over my face, “Even if you're right, what exactly is he going to gain by making us turn rabid and crazy?”

There couldn't have been any reason for him to make us rabid, it would have made more sense if he had poisoned us to kill us, but we were very much alive.

“I don't believe it, I still don't believe it.”

Dr Maksim had even checked up on me to know if I would be returning, going as far as waiting for me, why would he do something like this?

Ezekiel pushed to his feet as well, “You don't seem to understand the lengths humans would go to get what they want, he knows something, and we need to find out what it is and how much harm it could cause before...”

Before it affects all of us and makes us murder the people around us.

Taking another deep breath, I covered my face with both palms. “Okay then, if you really think he's behind this then we need to be sure.”

“What are you suggesting?” Just after asking, I heard the sound of doors opening and my heart leapt from my chest at the same time I pushed Ezekiel to the floor.

My brother came out of his room, brows knitted in a frown, “Why are you up this late, and why's there smoke everywhere?”

All I could offer him was a tightlipped smile at first, “I couldn't sleep, that's all,” scratching the back of my head.

My stomach dropped.

I really didn't want him asking questions about Ezekiel, at least not yet. “What about you?” I asked, trying desperately to sound casual. “Why are you awake?”

“I needed a glass of water.”

“Oh.”

Alfred walked toward the kitchen, and I remained rooted to the spot, painfully aware of the person lying on the floor behind me who mouthed, “Why am I hiding? Just introduce me.”

Absolutely not!! I mouthed back, focusing on my brother and smiling.

He poured himself a glass and slowly drank from it.

The room became painfully quiet.

Too quiet.

Alfred lowered the glass and looked at me, then at the sofa and his gaze returned to me.

My smile brightened.

He frowned, gaze narrowing. “You okay?”

“Perfectly fine." My answer was too hurried.

He gave me another strange look and I resisted the urge to glance downward.

After another sip, Alfred set the glass down. He raised an eyebrow.

“You have bags under your eyes,” I added quickly. “You look exhausted, you should go back to bed,”

Alfred was still tired enough not to question it further, “Fine.” He yawned and headed back toward his room, the door closing behind him.

I waited.

Five seconds.

Ten.

Then I finally released the breath I'd been holding.

“Goodness gracious!”

Ezekiel slowly rose from behind the sofa, dusting himself off, “That was close.”

I glared at him.

He grinned.

“So, when are you going to introduce me to your family?” A smirk played on his lips.

After glaring at him, he understood that now was not the time.

“I need to go into Dr Maksim's facility, find out what's truly going on in there.”

Before I could finish my train of thoughts, Ezekiel cut in, “Absolutely not, there's no way you are going in there alone.”

I chuckled, “You don't have a choice.”

“Matter of fact, we don't have a choice, I'm the only one he knows and trusts because I've worked there, don't you think it would be suspicious if anyone else went?”

Besides, he was already waiting for my answer if I would return, luckily I told him I would think about it.

Ezekiel’s expression hardened, jaws clenched, “It's too risky Sylvia, what if he…”

I sighed, understanding where he was coming from, “I know it is, but except you can think of something else, and fast, this is what we have to find out if he's behind all of this,” I said softly, reaching out and stroking his cheek.

Worry overtook us, we both comforted each other silently.

“And if he is?”

I stared into his dark brown eyes, feeling his question in my heart, because to be honest, I didn't know. If he was behind it all then my plans of saving my mother would be jeopardized, “We can't decide that yet!” I whispered.

“I can go back, act like nothing happened, and snoop around. Maybe I'll find something. A file. A sample. Anything that tells us what he's really doing.”

Ezekiel sighed, he didn't like it, neither did I, but he knew I was right, “This is a terrible plan, but...I trust you.”

I smiled faintly and proudly.

“Now that that's settled, you've overstayed your welcome, you need to get going.”

I began dragging him towards the door, staring out the window, it was getting brighter by the second, “Wait, wait.”

I wasn't paying attention to my surroundings or perhaps it was the incense burning, I didn't realise there was someone behind the door until I pulled it open.

“Isaac! What are you doing here!”
