Chapter 147 Samples in Custody

Chapter 147 Samples in Custody
Chapter 147: Samples in Custody

Sylvia's pov

Time passed, infinitely, when it could have been just a few seconds. Frozen in place as his words repeated in my mind like a mantra.

Perhaps I didn't hear him right, but then he had uttered it twice, so I knew I must not have been deaf.

I didn't know why, probably out of fear, probably out of uncertainty, I had taken a step back from him, out of his arms.

This caused his brows to knit in confusion and hurt, which was not my intention to. But I didn't bother because I hadn't pulled myself together from the shock.

Taking deep and slow breaths, “Uhmm…..uhhh.”

No words could even be formed because I was utterly speechless.

I have never had someone profess their love for me. Heck! I had even been rejected and had given up on finding someone who would love and cherish me for who I was the same way my parents loved each other.

My gaze was fixed on him, narrowed brows as I wondered what he saw in me to say those particular words, did he want something from me? Did he want to use me?

Ezekiel must have been weirded out because his expression twisted into one of confusion, “Sylvia, What's wrong?”

I ran my tongue over my lips before biting down on them, “it's…it's…just…” I stuttered, my breathing became heavy for me.

“No one's…ever…said those words to me.”

When I finally found my voice, they were barely above a whisper.

Ezekiel's lips turned up as though he knew something I didn't, stepping closer towards me with a soft chuckle, “Well, if you are wondering if I meant it…I do,” winding his arms around me and pulling me closer again.

My heart felt troubled though, I have heard of second mates before and wondered if this was it, but I didn't feel anything.

I mean I do feel something for him, but…

It's all just too confusing for me, “I…don't really know what to say Ezekiel, what am I supposed to say?”

“No, no, no pressure,” he pushed me with his finger, chipping my cheeks, “I don't expect you to say it back to me, at least not yet, I just wanted you to know how much I care about you and how much you mean to me.”

“Hence why I am here, defying all rules and odds to be with you.”

I stared at him, obviously not believing for a second that such a person would go out of their way for me.

Risk their lives, for me!!

The tears pooled, “I'm sorry Ezekiel,” and I broke down.

Ezekiel seemed to be in control of his feelings as he rubbed soothing circles on my back, whispering words of encouragement to me, “I don't understand it myself y'know."

“And we don't have to talk about it now, what matters is, I am here. I'm here for you.”

It took me a few minutes to get myself back together, pushing that conversation to the back of my mind and worrying more about his safety now, he was here and there was nothing I could do about it now.

I was sure the guards were already plotting outside my door but as long as they hadn't entered we still had a lot of time.

“Well, if you are going to be here, we need to hide your scent,” I pushed away from him, feeling the odd disappearance of his body warmth, walking over to the closet and fishing out a candle, setting it on fire.

Letting the incense fill the room.

“Well since you're here, you might as well help me out, the reason I called earlier,” I whispered softly, knowing my mother and brother were still asleep which I informed him off.

Sitting down together, “You remember that wolf we encountered after our date?”

Ezekiel nodded in confusion and I continued, “Well, long story short, there's been two more here, and Michael and I realised that wolves who had attended the college are the only ones turning into mindless monsters.”

There seems to be surprise on his face, but only temporarily, like he wasn't surprised by this information, “Yeah, we came to that conclusion as well.”

“What??! How!”

“Well, after you left, more of the wolves' behaviour became unpredictable, just like you described.”

Wow, this only confirms it, the humans knew about us and they created measures just to hunt us down.

My thoughts drifted to Peggy and I wondered if she had known about this operation.

“It must have been something we all had access to, like the water, or the food or something, and ... .now I'm scared, what if ... .what if we also start behaving in the same bizarre way?”

I voice out my fear, glancing behind me at the closed doors where family slept.

“I can't say we would be fine,” Ezekiel confessed.

It felt like my hope died even more. Perhaps I wanted someone to convince me that it wouldn't happen, that I wouldn't lose my senses and attack people mindlessly.

Ezekiel's sigh drew my attention, when I glanced in his direction, his brows narrowed and he looked to be deep in thought, “What are you thinking about?”

Pressing his lips against each other before speaking, “It's just weird, considering we have been in Briseville longer and none of this had happened, no crazy wolves bursting out of nowhere, it's just weird,”  he whispered the last part to himself.

We both sat in thought, trying to figure out our next move, what could have possibly gone wrong.

Ezekiel lit up in that instant in shock and a bit of horror.

“What is it?!!” I was also curious, sitting up on the couch.

His gaze filled with uncertainty as they peered at me, “The only thing I can think about was the blood samples that were collected.”

I jerked back in confusion, revealing the new program that had been implemented, “That can't be possible, that can't be,” I couldn't believe it.

Ezekiel seemed to buy his idea however, “It's the only thing that makes sense, think about it.”

I chuckled, shaking my head, “No!! That would mean, Dr Maksim…”

Dr Maksim…
