Chapter 142 The Council
Chapter 142: The Council
Sylvia's pov.
The tension that hung in the air was very thick and musty with silence that covered the field as everyone froze, barely taking the pressure from the leaders.
I could feel it although it didn't have as much effect on me though, but the others visibly struggled.
It didn't last long, thankfully as Sanders raised his hands up in surrender, “Alpha, you misunderstand me, I am just trying to comprehend the reasoning behind such actions, that's all.”
“We can discuss that in private, everyone else can return to their activities,” his voice louder as he instructed.
Alpha Jonathan's gaze never left his beta as they continued to have a silent strife unbeknownst to others. I really wished I didn't have to place Alpha Jonathan in such a position.
It was my call and he had backed me up.
Why, though? Why did he trust me to that extent?
The others dispersed with silent murmurs and gossips. Alpha Jonathan instructed that I be at the pack house which I bowed my head to as he walked away.
Sanders glanced in my direction briefly, I could see the hatred brimming behind those brown orbs, behind a wry smile that sat on his lips before he walked off as well.
A sigh escaped my lips as I glanced around for the main reason of being in the field.
My brother.
I spotted him and at the same time our eyes locked and we closed in on each other, I placed my arms around his shoulders, “God, I was so worried,” I held him close because I was afraid I was going to lose him too.
“I'm fine, there weren't many casualties, it's a good thing you came just in time.”
Pulling away from him, I assessed his demeanour and body for any signs of distress or physical harm, but there was none, only then could I finally calm down, “What did I do other than make everything worse?”
“All I know is, if you weren't here, they would have gathered him and there would be more piled up bodies on our hands.”
I smiled at his attempt to make me feel special but I knew better.
Exhaling heavily, “Well, I need to head to the pack house and give an ‘explanation’” in air quotes with my fingers, dreading having to be in that suffocating environment with those people.
“You need to head home, mom's worried already, I'll probably be home late so don't wait up,” I ruffled his hair as he nodded before sending him off.
The pack house came into view and I had lost count of how many times I had sighed in distress, trying to come up with a reason for why I had let the wild-like wolf go, other than the weak and lame excuse of it being the right thing to do.
I mean sure it would save a lot of warriors from getting injured, there were far more benefits of catching him than letting him go.
I pushed open the doors, gaining entry into the pack house, “Hello, I'm here to see the alpha,” I greeted the staff who stared at me with a demeaning gaze.
Seen it before, don't really care anymore.
“They are waiting in the break room,”
Nodding, I found my way to the break room when her words struck me, “They,” it sounded more than Alpha Jonathan and Sanders.
And I was right, the council was present as well all seven of them.
Are you kidding me?
The break room was more like a conference room, with a u shaped table, the alpha at the curve while his beta and the seven councils on either side of the table.
Why did it feel like I was on some sort of trial?
“C'mon in Sylvia, don't worry, you have not done anything wrong, we just want to hear what you have to say,” Alpha Jonathan assured me softly, mirroring his eyes which were the only things that kept me calm.
The others however didn't seem pleased with the alpha's attitude towards me.
I stood at the opening between the U shaped table, hands crossed behind my back and the questions rolled in without delay.
“What is your plan?”
"What's going on?”
“Did you uncover what's really happening to them? Why did you let it go?”
Alpha Jonathan raised a hand to silence them, “Let her speak!”
I closed my eyes, taking a deep breath to calm my racing heart before I started, “Yes, I have seen this case before, back when we were still amongst the humans.”
Shit!! Wrong choice of words.
“In their surroundings, there were always cases of wolves,” I cleaned up.
I didn't have an answer to their other questions, “Why I let him go...” I was stalling, but for what? “was because…”
There was a knock on the door and a familiar face popped his head in at the order of the Alpha to come in, “Is there something you need Micheal?” With a brow raised.
Micheals gaze met mine briefly and I was also confused why he was here.
“Perhaps I can answer your questions, sir,” he entered fully through the door and closed it gently behind him, coming to stand beside me.
He had an answer.
I tried to ask with eyes but I only got a stare back.
“Go on, What's this answer you have for us?” Sanders chided.
“Sylvia was right to have let him go, and we don't need them to find the answer we are looking for.”
Wow, I didn't think he was going to be on my side with this. It begged the question why.
One of the council members wasn't buying it, “Are you trying to cover for her, how would you know anyway?” His suspicious eyes lingered in me.
I could only hide my fear behind a blank expression.
His words implied one thing, “Why trust the daughter of a traitor?”
My hatred for this council soared higher, knowing fully well, it was their unanimous decision that had my father executed.
