I do
The moment Jim offered to plan the wedding, I couldn’t help but feel a mixture of relief and apprehension.
Relief because, being Jim, he would certainly have fantastic, creative ideas and plenty of energy to take on the challenge. But at the same time, apprehension was inevitable.
I knew that with Jim in charge, things could quickly get out of hand, reaching proportions that neither Ryan nor I had anticipated.
Sitting at the kitchen table, I watched Jim gesticulate enthusiastically as he talked about his ideas for the ceremony and reception. He was so excited it was almost contagious. Almost.
“Deborah, you have no idea what I have in mind!” he exclaimed, his eyes shining with excitement. “This is going to be a legendary wedding, worthy of a modern fairy tale!”
I looked at Ryan, who was standing next to me, and he gave me an encouraging smile. It was as if he was telling me to trust Jim and let things flow. I knew Ryan wanted our wedding to be special, too, but at the same time, he shared my desire for something more intimate and meaningful, without all the fanfare Jim seemed to be planning.
“Jim, I know you want to do something amazing,” I began, choosing my words carefully. “But Ryan and I have always envisioned a simpler wedding, something that truly reflects who we are and how we feel about each other.”
Jim nodded, but I could tell my concern hadn’t dissuaded him. “I understand, Deb. But trust me, what I have in mind is going to be unforgettable, and it doesn’t have to be over the top. We can keep the essence of you two, but with a touch of magic, you know?”
I sighed, knowing Jim had already made up his mind, and I didn’t want to disappoint him, especially since he was so determined to be a part of this moment in such a special way. He was one of our best friends, someone who had been there for us through all the hard times, so who was I to say no?
“Okay, Jim,” I said, finally giving in. “Let’s see what you have in mind. But please remember that we want it to be something that represents our story, not a spectacle.”
Jim smiled broadly, pleased with my answer. “You won’t regret it, Deb. Trust me, I’ll take care of everything, and it’s going to be wonderful. Leave it to me!”
And with a symbolic handshake, Jim officially became our wedding planner. I couldn’t help but feel a little anxious as I thought about what was to come, but at the same time, there was something comforting in the idea that Jim was taking care of everything. He was detail-oriented and creative, and I knew he would put his heart and soul into every aspect of the planning.
Over the next few days, Jim began bombarding me with ideas and options. From choosing the flowers to the style of the invitations, he seemed to have an opinion on everything.
To my surprise, he even suggested a theme that reflected our journey so far—something that captured the hardships we’d faced and the strength we’d found in each other.
As we discussed every detail, I realized that despite my initial concerns, Jim was truly committed to making sure our wedding would be an authentic celebration of our love. He listened to Ryan’s and my suggestions, and was able to find a balance between his grandiose ideas and our simpler desires.
One afternoon, while Jim was with Ryan at the ceremony site discussing seating arrangements, I sat home alone, reflecting on everything that was happening. It was hard to believe that we would soon be officially married.
With so much focus on the preparations, I barely had time to process what this meant to me. Even though I was absolutely certain that I wanted to spend the rest of my life with Ryan, there was a part of me that still struggled with the idea that something so beautiful and good could actually happen.
I remember when we were just friends, trying to figure out what we felt for each other as we faced chaos and danger together. And now, here we were, about to bring our lives together in a way that, not so long ago, I never would have imagined.
That night, when Ryan came home, he found me sitting on the couch, lost in thought. He came over and sat next to me, wrapping an arm around my shoulders. “What’s wrong, Deb? You seem worried.” I laid my head on his shoulder and sighed. “I’m just thinking about how things have changed so quickly.
How we’re here, planning a wedding, and how surreal it still feels that this is all actually happening.” Ryan stroked my hair, his presence always comforting. “I feel that way too sometimes. But I think it’s because everything has been so intense, and now that things are finally calming down, we have a moment to process everything.” I turned to him, looking into his eyes. “Are you happy with how things are going? With Jim taking care of you, I’m happy.”giving of the wedding and everything?”
He smiled, that smile that always made my heart race. “Yes, I am. I think Jim is doing a great job, and it’s nice to see how committed he is to this. But the most important thing to me is that you’re happy, Deb. None of this matters if you’re not.”
I felt a wave of warmth spread through my chest, and I knew in that moment that no matter what happened in the next few days, I was exactly where I was supposed to be. “I’m happy, Ryan. So happy.”
Over the next few days, Jim continued with his plans, and although there were still moments of anxiety, Ryan’s trust in him—and in us—helped me relax and enjoy the process. I knew that with Jim by our side, the wedding would be special, and that in the end, it would all come down to the love that Ryan and I shared.
And so, as the days went by, the wedding took shape, and I couldn't wait for the moment when we would finally say “I do” to each other, surrounded by the friends who meant so much to us.
