Chapter 22
Alpha's Kaye's POV
“What do you mean? And what right do you have to interfere in the meeting?” I snapped.
“I'm sorry. But this was what I found. The lady who lured us into the woods had this cloak on.” He presented the piece of cloak to me.
I placed it on the table for everyone to take a look. There is no doubt I have seen this pattern of cloak somewhere. My heart almost failed when I recalled that the cloak belonged to Anabel.
I had been thinking all night long how to get her out of this mess. If only I had left the guard talk to me in private, she wouldn't be in this kind of mess. I prayed silently and hoped that nobody would recognize the cloak.
“This…. This piece of cloak looked so familiar.” One of the members said, and I lifted my eyes to meet his.
I knew, at this point, that it was over for Anabel.
“Where..... Where have you seen it?” I stuttered, hoping he wouldn't remember it.
“Isn't this the cloak of Anabel? The one her mother left her before committing suicide?” He snapped his finger as he remembered, and the other members seemed to second it.
“Let's bring her here.” One suggested.
“And bring her cloak along.” Another proposed as they said to the guard and he left.
I tried to connect to Anabel through mind link, but it wasn't working.
After a few minutes, Anabel was brought into the conference room with her cloak. My gaze fell on the ground as she tried to make eye contact with me; I didn't have the courage to look her in the face.
“But why would she help Jasper?” I pondered hard.
“Bring the cloak here.” The oldest of the members said.
He took the cloak from him and compared it with the piece, and it happened to be the same.
“It truly is hers. She was the one who helped Jasper escape.”
“Just because of a cloak? You come to such a rash decision?” I snapped, and this surprised everyone, including me.
I never thought I could still stand up for her, I had always been a coward for her.
“What? Why would you say such after all the evidence pointed at her?”
“Pointed at her? Anyone could steal her cloak and try to implicate her.”
“And take her away from her house too?” One of the female members scoffed. “She wasn't in her house at the time of the incident, a piece of her cloak was found at the crime scene, and you think this is someone trying to implicate her? So unbelievable.” She scoffed at the last sentence.
“You will watch the way you talk to me, Mrs. Brown.” I got to my feet.
“Really? And if I don't?” She dared me as she also got on her feet.
“You would kill me like you've done to others?” She asked, and this infuriated me more.
“How dare you lash such an accusation on me? “
“Why are you defending her so much? That means you are sure she is innocent. That shows a lot, Alpha Kaye.” She took a pause to swallow hard while her gaze was fixed on me.
“You were not hesitant to agree to the prosecution of Jasper, but here you are, defending a woman. That shows that you have something to do with the killings going around. And more possibly that Jasper was implicated by you, to make him look like the killer.”
“Stop that nonsense, Mrs. Brown.”
“No, Alpha Kaye. It's you who should do your duty if you're sure you are not the killer.”
“By taking the life of the innocent?”
Mrs. Brown was about to talk when Anabel butted in.
“I'm guilty...... I plead guilty.” She said with tears embedded in her voice.
“Why?” I fought hard within myself. “Why would she admit to it when I'm trying so hard to get her out of this mess?”
“I couldn't watch Beta Jasper suffer for a crime he didn't commit.”
“How are you sure he didn't commit the crime?” One asked.
“He told me he saw a woman. A woman did the crime.”
“A woman….” I mumbled, but it was audible enough to the members and all eyes fell on me.
“Is there something you know, Alpha?” Mrs. Brown asked.
“Nothing more than I got a glimpse of a woman peeping at us during the search. Her scent was familiar, but I still couldn't place it.”
“Are you sure it isn't her scent?” Mrs. Brown referred to Anabel, and I glared at her.
“Wouldn't I know that by now?” I scoffed.
“Well, this meeting is over. We'll meet tomorrow again.”
“What about this traitor?” Mrs. Brown made more emphasis on her last word.
“Put her in prison for the main time, until we decide her fate.” I said, not looking in her direction.
I was the first to exit the conference room and rushed to my room. Frustrated and disappointed in myself for being unable to protect Anabel, I threw a fist at the wall.
I grunted as I sat on the edge of the bed until a thought crossed my mind.
“We searched through every nook and cronies of the pack and couldn't find the piece of cloak? Definitely, someone planted the piece of cloak to implicate Anabel. But that still doesn't make her innocent, she was part of the conspiracy.”
“I need to find a way to keep Anabel alive. And also to find Olivia and Jasper.” I grunted at the thought of these two that made my life miserable and endangered the life of the woman I love.
“If I can find one of those mafia bosses, I'm sure I'll find those two.” I thought.
But I can't leave my throne, my pack to go find those traitors. I thought Jasper was my trusted buddy and with him betraying me, I can't find myself to trust anyone.
Who would be the great choice to go to the human world?
Alice!
