Chapter 20

Anabel's POV.

I was restless, pacing around the room when I heard a knock on the door. Taken by shocked, I jolted out of my thoughts and stood there for some seconds while the knock persisted, this time it was louder.

“Who's there?” I managed to ask.

“We need to see you, Anabel.”

I was taken aback by the voice and strange scents from the door that knew my name. Slowly and terrified, I walked to the door and opened it. The men at the door pushed me out of the way, forcing their way into the room as I feel to the ground.

“Who are you two?” I gnashed my teeth as I felt the angry in my wolf and ready to punch on them.

“Wait….” The taller one seems to notice angry. “Jasper sent us here.” He added, and my face softened.

I slowly got up, shut the door and walked to them. Offered them a seat at the table.

“Please have a seat while I get you something to drink.” I offered, but the short man stopped me.

“There would no need for that. We didn't come here for that.” His voice was so alarming that I couldn't resist and had to seat with them to know what the urgency was about.

“So, what brought you here?” My voice was slowly but steady.

“We want to help Jasper escape out from prison by this midnight, and he said you could help us.”

“Sure.” Excitement found its way into my voice as I sat straight to hear more of the detail. “What would you need me to do?”

“We would need you to distract the guards by midnight, then, we will you for Jasper.”

I leaned back against the chair, skeptically looked at them with doubt in my eyes.

“What makes me want to trust you? That this isn't a trap?”

“If it was a trap, then you would be guilty right now. And we would have handed you to the Alpha.” The short man snapped.

“Jasper requires our help and if you know you're not ready to give it, please let us know. We'll find someone else.”

“No, I will do that, but what happens next?”

“We'll go back to my world; the human world.” The taller man said.

“That's good enough, then. I'm Anabel, by the way.”

“We know that already.” The short man snapped with a glare.

“Ignore him, please. I'm Holm and he's Willy.”

“Okay, we'll meet here by midnight before we get to work.”

“Okay then. Play your part well. You wouldn't want any of us to get beheaded along with Jasper.” Willy retorted in almost a whisper as they made their way out of my house.

I commonly glare and ignore him; he is the least of my worries right now.

Soon, the sun went down and midnight came. I waited patiently, checking through the window to see if Holm and Willy were approaching. But they weren't there each time I checked.

“What if they had gone to save Jasper?”

“What if they lied to him that I refused to help him? That would make me an ingrate.” I panicked at the thought.

I grabbed a blue cloak that hanged on the corner of my house and was a bit of set out when I saw them walking in on my, hastily.

“Why are you just coming? This is almost 1am.” I snapped at them after they had shut the door.

“Do you think it was easy to sneak out of the house without anyone's notice?” Will retorted.

“That's enough. Let's get down to business. We don't have much time left until dawn.” Holm suggested.

“Exactly.”

I grabbed a bag and the cloak that I had prepared for the mission, and we walked out of the house and headed to the prison gate. We hid behind a big oak tree and watched the two guards.

I brought out a live rabbit from the bag and wore the cloak.

“I'm going to distract them now. Please, you should be out in at most five minutes. They wouldn't want to go far from the gate.” I said in a whisper, and they nodded in agreement.

I walked to the guards, a few steps away from them, but far enough not to reveal my face. Took the rabbit and killed it using my paws and I sucked on it blood. With a grin, I lifted my head, dropped the dead rabbit and looked at the guards.

Of course, they understood the message and took steady defensive stances. A mischievous smile played on my lips.

I raised my hands in surrender as if I were scared, turned around and made to leave. But I sprinted as fast as I could; it was my best and all, I grabbed out of the guard and continued sprinting.

As planned, the second guard sprinted after me, but he was far from my league. After I thought I've told them far from the gate, I let go of the guards and sprinted back to the gate.

I saw Holm and Willy helping Jasper out of the prison.

“Be fast, they might be here soon.” I hurried them.

We all took to our heels as we ran toward the bus station that lead to the human world. We were at the station, waiting for the next bus when we heard a loud sound. It was no ordinary sound, it was an alarm that a prisoner had escaped. Only Jasper and I understood that, and we panicked more.

Luckily for us, a bus arrived just in time, and they all got on the bus while I stood put to where I was.

“Come on, Anabel. We don't have time.” Jasper said.

“No, it would be too suspicious. I visited you today and you disappeared? I'll wait back and make sure they never get to you.”

“No, Anabel. I can't..... I can't let you do this. Likewise, I would rather go back to prison.”

“And die? Have all your dreams scattered? No, I can't allow this. See this as a payback for your help the last time.” I said as tears streamed down my cheeks.

Jasper stretched out his hand to hold me for the last time.

“The only way you can pay me back is to love me, I told you this before. So, you are not allowed to die. I'll come back for you, and you will love me."

His words brought more tears to my eyes until I scented some guards approaching us.

“I have to go now.”

I watched the bus take off at a fast speed, just as I had prayed for.

I sprinted into the woods.
