Chapter 105 Fire Him, Did I Agree?
Excluding the principal, the teacher, and Alan, there were six others left in the office. They were split into two groups. The three in the middle, all wearing school uniforms and covered in bruises, were probably the victims.
On the other side, there was another student in a school uniform with a torn sleeve, flanked by two middle-aged women.
As soon as Quinn walked in, Alan, with his face red and swollen and a handprint still visible, rushed over to her. "Quinn, why are you here? I didn't do anything wrong, it was all..."
Quinn cut him off, "Alan, just tell me what happened. No one's going to mess with you while I'm here."
Alan nodded, his eyes welling up. "After gym class, the teacher gave us some free time. I went to the restroom and heard someone crying. When I went in, I saw someone getting bullied, and then..."
Before Alan could finish, the woman in the fur coat lunged at him. The slap aimed at Alan's face was intercepted by Kelly, who grabbed the woman's arm tightly.
This woman was clearly very protective of her kid and wasn't about to let Alan speak.
Even Alan, who had been living in Jake's shadow for years, couldn't help but tremble. His head hung low, tears in his eyes, and his face still stinging from the earlier slap.
He regretted going in alone. Even though he had only pushed lightly, it was still self-defense.
Unfortunately, no one here, including his teacher and the principal, seemed to care about his side of the story. They were all listening to that shrew.
The woman sneered, "Like parent, like child. If you don't discipline your kid, I will. Instead of thanking me, you dare to lay hands on me? This is outrageous!"
Quinn scanned the room. "This is a misunderstanding between kids. If you, as an adult, hit someone, should I hit you back?"
The woman got even angrier. "Who do you think you are, talking to me like that?"
Quinn replied, "Apologize. You hit a kid, which is wrong. No matter what, apologize to him first."
Before the woman could respond, the boy behind her started shouting, "How dare you talk to my mom like that? Do you know who my mom is? Believe it or not, my dad can make you bankrupt in no time, leaving you with nowhere to sleep."
He then puffed out his chest. "Listen up, my dad is Duncan McCoy, the head of the finance department in Sunrise City."
Quinn looked the boy up and down with disdain. In today's world, not standing out meant going unnoticed. But once you did, could these government officials withstand scrutiny?
Quinn said, "I don't care who your dad is. Your mom hitting someone is wrong. I'll say it again, apologize."
She added, "If you don't say sorry, don't come crying to me when I call the police to sort this out."
The word "police" seemed like a joke to this mother and son.
The woman scoffed, "Go ahead, call them right now. Don't mess up my shopping schedule."
She showed off her manicure and rolled her eyes. "Let's see who dares to take the case. If you dare to stop me, don't blame me for hitting you too. Anyone who bullies my son deserves to die. Hitting you is light."
At that moment, quick steps approached, and a middle-aged man with slicked-back hair rushed in, with Emily trailing behind, looking sweaty.
"Dad!"
"Honey!"
"Alan!"
The mother and son rushed to the man. Seeing the tear in the boy's sleeve, the man's eyes narrowed, and he gritted his teeth. "Who the hell laid a hand on my boy? Show yourself, now!"
Alan, scared by the man's imposing presence, trembled and hid behind Quinn, clutching her clothes tightly, not daring to breathe.
In contrast, Quinn remained calm. "Before you accuse, ask what your son did."
She stood her ground against his intimidation. Quinn quipped, "Jumping in without knowing the facts, is that your idea of problem-solving?"
Duncan turned and scrutinized Quinn. "Who are you to speak to me like that?"
Quinn smiled faintly. "I don't care who you are. In any situation, you should first understand the facts."
The woman in the fur coat spat and pointed at Quinn. "This Sherman kid must be expelled immediately."
Quinn shook her head, believing in her brother Alan. Despite his poor grades, he was an honest and good kid. "Do you think the school is your home? You say expel, and it happens?"
She turned to Alan, gently patting his shoulder for reassurance. "Alan, explain what happened. Tell us everything."
Alan met Quinn's gaze. Despite being badly beaten, he had seen the dark side of society. He was scared, trembling.
Emily, full of concern, hugged him. "Alan, it's my fault. Now that Quinn and I are here, speak up. Even if it costs me everything, I'll seek justice for you."
Emily's words seemed to remind Alan. He was scared, not just for himself, but for Quinn. He didn't want Quinn to get hurt, so he hesitantly suggested, "Mom, Quinn, maybe... maybe we should just drop it. Stay out of this."
Quinn, a bit disappointed, said, "What's there to fear? If things get out of hand, I'll reach out to your brother-in-law. If he can't handle it, we'll call his elders. Justice will prevail. I don't believe they can control all of Sunrise City."
She wasn't afraid at all, using Carl as a backup to encourage Alan to tell the truth. If the truth came out and the other side remained unrepentant, she would have to call for help.
Meanwhile, a Rolls-Royce stopped at the school gate, and Carl stepped out as Louis quickly opened the door.
Louis glanced at the school's name carved in stone, frowning slightly. "Sir, this inscription was written by Mr. Steven Ward and later carved by the school leaders. The year was when you were in high school..."
Carl raised his hand to interrupt Louis. "Since my grandfather valued and invested in this school, I won't let it fall into corruption. You mentioned on the phone that the school has been embezzling funds. What's going on?"
Leading Carl into the school and explaining the situation, Louis saw Carl's shock at the school's condition. Deciding to investigate, Carl asked Louis to call the principal.
Noticing the principal's office door ajar, Louis was puzzled. As he approached and witnessed Duncan raising his hand, he was taken aback to see him targeting Quinn. Reacting swiftly, he ran to intervene.
Seeing Louis suddenly rush in, Duncan glanced around and began to mock him. "Is this your husband? Just in time. But look at him, no power, no authority, no presence. I thought he was some hotshot!"
Louis, embarrassed, understood that Duncan didn't recognize him and explained, "I'm not Mrs. Ward's husband. I'm just her driver!"
The woman in the fur coat scoffed. Money was nothing; power was everything. In Sunrise City, her husband's position was unshakable.
Duncan, impatient, looked at the principal. "Kick this guy out now. I came running, thinking this was urgent. If you don't boot him, I've got ways to make this school pay.."
The principal and teachers were terrified, about to plead.
"Expel him? Did I agree?" A deep, magnetic voice came from the door, drawing everyone's attention.
With his hands in his pockets, Carl walked in with an imposing presence that made everyone tremble. He had decided to come personally.
Seeing Carl, Duncan was stunned. He rubbed his eyes, confirming it was Carl, and his legs went weak. "Mr... Mr. Ward?"
Carl ignored him, walking to Quinn, pulling her into his arms, and smoothing her hair. "Honey, did they hit you?"
Duncan's eyes widened.
Quinn was equally shocked, though with a hint of embarrassment.
