Chapter 42 Old and Ugly
"I never thought Elena would actually have the audacity to come back."
"Isn't that the truth? She went against Mr. Winston's wishes and married a man who was both ugly and poor. Now that she's been dumped, she's come back. If it were me... I would have hung myself a long time ago."
"Shh, lower your voices. Jessica is here."
A member of the Winston family quietly put a stop to such conversation, in case Jessica would hear.
Jessica Winston was Jeff's granddaughter. Her father was matrilocal residence, so her last name was Winston.
Jessica frowned in disgust, "Don't worry about me. You're stating the facts. Elena married a man who was both ugly and old. It's so embarrassing."
Because of Elena, Jessica was looked down upon by her friends. What a misfortune.
Elena happened to pass by. She didn't expect that people were talking about her.
She hadn't done anything. How did these people end up blaming her?
They said the man she married was both old and ugly?
Elena thought about it carefully.
Bryan was already twenty-six. He was four years older than her, indeed quite old.
But she didn't think he could be considered ugly...
At least in the whole town of Sunnia, she hadn't yet found a man who was handsomer than Bryan.
And also she really disliked people who gossiped behind others' backs, especially when she was the one being gossiped about.
"Ladies, are you enjoying the flowers here?"
Elena walked out with a smile.
Everyone was quite surprised when they saw Elena.
They hadn't seen Elena in years. They didn't expect her to have changed so much.
She looked even better.
Jessica placed her hands on her chest and lifted her head high, "You have the nerve to come back? Do you know that your scandal has made the whole Winston family lose face?"
Jessica was a spoiled young lady. She acted very arrogantly.
She didn't have much social experience.
Elena raised an eyebrow. A faint smile still lingered on her delicate face, "Oh? Is that so? I just got married and divorced. What does it have to do with you?"
How interesting. Did she need to get permission from the whole world when she got married?
Elena shook her head. She couldn't understand the thoughts of this group of people.
"But you have affected the Winston family," Jessica's expression changed and her tone became more aggressive.
Elena nodded thoughtfully, then slowly said, "But you don't belong to the Winston family. Even though you have the last name Winston, you're actually an outsider."
Everyone knew this, but no one dared to say it out loud.
Elena surprisingly had the courage to say it.
Everyone silently bowed their heads and dared not participate in the conversation...
After all, they were just relatives by marriage.
"What did you say?" Jessica's face instantly darkened. She hated it when people said she didn't belong to the Winston family.
Her father's family had no ability on their own. They relied entirely on the Winston family. Jessica also considered herself a member of the Winston family.
But her status was still not as noble as Elena's.
Elena sneered, "If there's something wrong with your ears, go see a doctor. Don't pretend to be deaf in front of me."
She really disliked this kind of person.
Jessica was angry but didn't know how to retort.
It seemed that her cousin had become more eloquent than before.
"But I am still much stronger than you. You, the abandoned woman." Jessica remembered Elena's current situation and suddenly felt confident.
Elena's eyes immediately turned cold, and the temperature around her dropped a few degrees.
"Oh, isn't this our frequent guest at the bar? You often get drunk there and casually go to a room with a man. What a coincidence. I bumped into you here," a teasing voice came.
Everyone patiently waited for this person to gossip.
Hugo nonchalantly walked out. His charming eyes were just as cold as Elena's.
He turned out to be the heir of the Klein family.
The Winston family had a close relationship with the Klein family, so it was normal for Hugo to appear here. What surprised everyone was that Hugo was standing behind Elena!
"Mr. Klein, what do you mean?" Jessica felt nervous when she saw Hugo. Because she had indeed encountered Hugo several times at the bar. He might know something.
Hugo shrugged his shoulders, appearing somewhat helpless, "I've bumped into Ms. Jessica a few times at the bar, and each time, she had a different male companion by her side. I envy her."
"What is going on?"
"Mr. Klein, what do you mean? Does Jessica often go to the bar?"
"She shouldn't, right? Jessica is always at the yoga studio or gym in her free time. I often see her posts."
"Yeah, Jessica is usually working. She shouldn't have time to go to the bar."
After hearing Hugo's words, everyone quietly discussed among themselves.
Jessica took a deep breath and calmed herself down, "Mr. Klein, you must have mistaken me for someone else. I never go to the bar."
Hugo had no evidence.
Hugo responded indifferently, then took out his phone from his pocket and enlarged the people in the photo album.
In the photo, it was Jessica. She was also hanging on to a man.
Hugo slid a few more pictures, all of them showing Jessica with different men.
"Wow, I never thought Jessica would act this way in front of us," someone said.
"Looks can be deceiving..." another person responded.
Everyone looked at Jessica with meaningful glances.
Because of Jeff, they couldn't speak too openly.
But Jessica already felt embarrassed. She glared at Hugo angrily. It was all because of him.
She couldn't bear to stay any longer. She hummed coldly and slipped away.
Elena squinted her eyes. She observed everything as an outsider.
She never expected Hugo to arrange everything so well. He solved a problem for her.
Hugo lowered his head and gently patted Elena's shoulder. "Little princess, are you satisfied with how I handled it just now?"
Elena smiled comfortably and calmly replied, "It's acceptable."
"Hahaha. Then I will continue to work hard."
Hugo proudly laughed.
Acceptance from Elena was already the highest recognition for him.
Elena had high standards.
"Don't pay attention to that woman's nonsense just now," Hugo comforted in a low voice.
Elena blinked her long eyelashes and nodded lightly.
She really didn't need to take those words to heart.
For some reason, there was still a sense of emptiness in her heart.
"Let's go somewhere else to stroll," Hugo suggested, pursing his lips.
"Okay."
Everyone watched the two of them leave and suddenly felt confused...
According to reason, Elena was just a divorced woman, so why did Hugo treat her so specially?
