CHAPTER 154 THE WOLF THAT I AM
“Or we could take pictures.” Trisha suggested. “That is better. Nobody would know we were ever here.”
Selena and Jade shook their heads. “We won’t be able to get all of the information. This book is too big. Besides, nobody would notice we were here. We are not going to be caught.” Selena closed the book and carried it with her as the girls dashed out of the room, turning off the lights. Selena paused on the way out to inspect the fountain.
Trisha poured some water into a bottle and stored it in her bag. “For examination,” she stated as all eyes were on her.
Patricia saw the girls hurrying out the door. “Wow, that was quick!” She checked the time, and it was almost 2 am. She narrowed her gaze to see what Selena was holding. “Oh, no. The Book of Night Wanderers. She found it.” Patricia burst into laughter. Selena will learn everything she needs to know about her family from that book. However, there will be one interruption. If her grandfather discovers that the book has gone missing, all hell will break loose.
Selena yawned as she climbed out of bed in the morning. It was a quick night, but today will be a busy one. Selena opened the curtain, letting light into her room. Dalett’s leg rested against Trisha’s, causing both of them to grumble.
“Is it really morning yet?” Dalett asked.
“Sure, It’s time to get to work. You girls can go back to sleep after we finish.” They got home around 2:30am and talked some more before retiring around 4 a.m. Selena sat on the bed and opened the book. She continued reading after flashing the UV light on it.
Jade entered through the open door, carrying a tray. She placed it on the table and looked over to Trisha and Dalett. “They’re still asleep.” Jade shifted her gaze to Selena. “This is your breakfast.” Jade placed her hands around her waist. “Have you found anything?”
“Not at all. However, there are way too many names here.” She put down the book. “Grandfather is just sending these people to their deaths.”
“I wish there was anything we could do.”
Hania entered through the open door. “What are you ladies talking about?” Selena and Jade turned to face her, surprised.
“Hania?” They both called.
“You are home.” Selena added.
“Yes, and you girls were totally unaware. That means there is something serious going on here that you are not telling me about.”
Selena slid the book under the pillow, away from Hania. They were not sure if she knew their parents were hunters or not. At the same time, it was impossible that she could have been unaware. After all, she is the first child and the one closest to Isabel.
“It’s nothing. Jade and I were just talking about the new maid.”
“A new maid?”
“Azeezat. Didn’t you see her downstairs?”
“I didn’t see her downstairs; Mom said she was going away for a month but didn’t mention a maid coming over.” Hania focused on Trisha and Dalett. “Did you girls have a sleepover, or something?”
“Kind of. Just let them be. They will get up when they are ready. It was a fantastic night.” Selena said. She got out of bed, grabbed her jacket, and led Hania from her room. Selena came to a halt in front of Jade as they walked down the stairs, Hania walking ahead. “You should stall her while I’m away.”
“Where are you going?”
“Go meet with Tyler. I have a lot of things to tell him. Maybe he can help with all of this.”
“Then what? Tell him our parents... No! Family are werewolf hunters?”
“What are you expecting me to do? Tyler is the only one I know who understands things. I can’t tell Titus. He will become enraged and want to kill everyone. This is the only choice we have. With Tyler aware of this, he could attempt to tame or direct the werewolves. He is a gamma in charge of soldiers.”
“And your rank is higher than his.”
“I understand, Jade, but who do you think werewolves would follow? A werewolf who only brings shame and barely does her job as one of them, or a gamma who has spent their entire lives training them?”
“You make a valid point. But what should I tell Hania if she asks about you?”
“Just make up a lie. You are good at it. Also, keep the book safe. I still have some reading to do when I get back.” Selena passed the back door as she walked to her car. Jade visited Hania on her own.
“Where is Selena?” Hania asked.
“She went outside for a bit. She will be back very soon. Do you want to meet Azeezat?”
“Nah. I just want to close my eyes and breathe in the fresh air. There are no parents at home. How nice is that?”
Jade remained perplexed as to why Hania never mentioned Selena’s memories resurfacing. Didn’t Isabel inform her about it?
When Hania looked at her, Jade smiled warmly.
* * * *
Selena came to a complete stop when she reached Titus’s garage. There were only two entry points into werewolf territory. The first was the main door, which was heavily guarded by some werewolves, and the second was an alternative entrance, which led to Titus’s house. Except for those closest to him, no one knows about it. Selena found out when he drove her home.
Selena got out of the car and noticed Tyler entering the mansion. She ran as fast as she could to catch up to him. “Tyler.” She blocked him from getting for the doorknob with his hand. “Exactly the person I was looking for.”
“Selena?” Tyler called. It had been a while since he had seen her. Before the accident. “What are you doing here?” Her presence surprised him, but he continued to act normally. He is willing to put aside his feelings for her for the sake of his friend.
“I have come to find you. Is Titus home?”
“Well, he went to see the council.”
“What?”
“Don’t worry, he’s not going to step down. Actually, he has had a strong desire to return to work since he arrived home yesterday morning. I was delighted. Did something happen between the two of you?”
Selena took a deep breath. She recalled what Titus had said. Perhaps he was clinging to 1%. “No. I didn’t say anything to him, which is probably a good thing, right? Titus wants to work again.”
“Yes. It is, tell me. What exactly is it?”
“You will not believe what I am about to say, but you must.”
“Luna, whatever you say is always true.” He smirked, and Selena shifted her attention away from him for a moment before returning it to his face.
“You must find a way to move the werewolves to another location.”
“Why?”
“The hunters are...” She paused to catch her breath.
“You shouldn’t be worried. This place is magically sealed. Except for werewolves, nobody knows we live here. Ordinary people’s eyes will not find this location unless we show them.”
“You don’t understand this. My family is...”
Tyler chimes in. “Are hunters?” Selena’s gaze widened. “Yeah. I know.” Tyler explained. “I’ve known for a long time.”
Selena’s jaw dropped open. He knows, but hasn’t told anyone? “Is there anyone else who knows?”
“No. It is just me. And I think you should leave before Titus returns. You don’t want him to find out.”
“Find out what?”
