CHAPTER 152 THE SPY IN OUR HOUSE
Selena cast a glance at Jade. “What are you thinking?” She has begun to follow Azeezat’s advice regarding Jade. That morning, after breakfast, Selena went to Jade’s room to discuss the previous night. She wondered why Jade would plan all of this. She was certain it was not because Jade encouraged her relationship with Titus.
Jade had stated. “I only assumed that bringing Titus over would irritate you. And to my surprise, it didn’t. What actually happened there? Have you rekindled your love?”
Selena did not reply right away. She was musing on what Titus had said to her the night before. She reached out her hand to shake Jade’s. “Can we call it a truce now that you have exacted your revenge on me?”
Jade was taken by surprise. “Just like that? You’re not going to get even with me?” Selena shook her head.
“That is no fun, Selena.”
“We should stick together instead of tearing each other apart. We still have a mission to complete. If we were separated, how would we find out more about our family?”
“You are right.” Jade said. “We shouldn’t take this petty fight too seriously."
“And I shouldn’t even think about pulling your head out of your neck.” Selena replied quietly. Definitely sure, Jade heard those words.
“What?”
Selena laughed. “Nothing.”
Presently, Jade took a quick glance at Selena. “I think it is best to leave at midnight.”
“Midnight?” They were all confused.
“Yes. Think about it. What happens if Granddad has a late-night meeting? What if the organization is still active? We don’t want anyone to notice we are there.”
Selena nodded slowly. “You are right. That reminded me. I previously noticed something in Mom’s room. It was the date and time printed on paper. I thought it was her meeting schedule, but now that we all know what my parents’ actual job is, I guess it’s the time for their organizational meeting.”
“Can you remember what was there?” Trisha inquired.
“The meeting on Monday starts at 1 p.m. and ends at 5 p.m. Tuesday...” Selena tried to remember. “Yes! Meetings on Tuesdays are always at night. It runs from 6 to 11 p.m. The same applies to Wednesday and the following days.”
“That means we still have one or two hours before the meeting starts. Selena, I think Jade and I should attend the meeting secretly. You and Dalett should arrive at midnight.” Trisha stated.
“That is risky, Trisha.” Selena said.
“Trisha, I’m with Selena. I’m glad my head is still intact. What do you think would have happened if I had been apprehended on the day I followed my mother?” Jade inquired.
“They wouldn’t have killed you. They would simply tell you more about the hunters and force you to join them.” Dalett stated.
Everyone nodded as they glanced at her. “Perhaps that’s what we should do.” Selena explained. “Jade. If grandfather accepts you as a member, you may provide us with more details.”
“It’s not as simple as you make it seem. There is a reason why Mum didn’t tell us what they do. Perhaps she doesn’t want blood on our hands. Did you think about it?”
Selena never allowed herself to think about Isabel. That is how much she hated her mom. Selena took deep breaths. “We will leave at midnight. That, I think, is the best way.”
Midnight was just a few hours away. The girls began filling an empty bag with snacks and water. Selena cast a glance outside the window. It was only a half moon. She has no reason to speak with Estry, but she wants Estry to take her revenge. Her grandfather had done so much damage that she was nearly killed.
Selena turned around to watch the girls fixate on the clock. A smile curled on her face because they all had the expression, “I wish I had magic that could speed up time.”
“What will we do about Azeezat?” Selena inquired as she approached them. At the very least, she will be able to keep them talking until the time runs out. She sat on her bed, hugging herself.
“That is correct. I nearly forgot we had another person in the house.” Jade said.
“Talking of person, isn’t Hania supposed to have returned by now?” Trisha asked.
“She didn’t even call. That means she won’t be able to come home this weekend. Perhaps mum told her not to because of Selena.”
“Hey. What is wrong with me?”
Jade shakes her head. “You have some sort of anger issues. If Hania finds out that your memories have returned, she will try to frustrate you, and you will not hesitate to kill her.”
“I’m not like that.” Selena focused her gaze on Trisha and Dalett. “Right?”
The both of them fell silent.
“You see now? Even your best friends cannot defend you.”
“Enough, Jade. Let’s talk about how to keep Azeezat from knowing we have left. Who knows, Mom might have turned her into a spy to gather information quickly.” Selena said. “I don’t trust Isabel. It is Isabel.”
“Or... maybe it’s time you gave her the opportunity to become a mother. This has been going on for a while. Selena, your dad died six months ago. Please let this all go. Mom is the only parent we have left. We can not get rid of her because of what she did when we were young.”
“Oh. Pay attention to me...”
*Beep, beep, beep.*
The alarm interrupted. They all stood up and prepared to leave.
“Wait!” Selena stopped them in their tracks. When they turned around, she replied, “I’m driving.”
“Of course, you will be the one to drive.” Trisha said. “You guys should be careful on your way out. Make no noise that will wake up the sleeping maid.” Trisha spoke quietly as she exited Selena’s room.
The girls gently descended the stairs and made their way out of the house, thinking they had gone unnoticed, but Azeezat had been peeking through her door the entire time, watching them leave. She reached for her cell phone. “Miss Patricia, the girls just left the house.”
