Chapter 58 Chapter 57
Evelyn.
It was nighttime, but for some reason sleep eluded me, and I tossed and turned in my bed, my mind consumed by a whirlwind of thoughts and emotions. The weight of my plan to eliminate the Alpha King and avenge my sister's death pressed heavily upon me, like a huge log of wood had been placed on my chest.
But it wasn't just the plan that kept me awake. My usually quiet wolf companion, who had been a constant presence in my mind, was restless tonight. I could feel its unease, its claws scratching at the edges of my consciousness, demanding attention. It was as if my wolf knew something I didn't, something important that it couldn't put into words.
Tired of the endless cycle of tossing and turning, I finally gave in to the restlessness and slipped out of bed. The cold ground sent a shiver up my spine as I made my way to the hallway, drawn to the night air and the soothing embrace of the moonlight.
As I stepped onto the hallway, my steps quiet, a gentle breeze caressed my skin, carrying with it the scent of the nearby forest. My wolf rose in interest, the call of the wild beckoning to me, and I knew I couldn't resist its pull any longer. I needed to clear my mind, to find solace in the embrace of nature.
Without hesitation, I hurried out of the grand castle and made my way through the silent courtyard of the palace. The guards, ever vigilant, seemed to ignore me as I passed by, their eyes filled with a mix of boredom and disinterest. I had expected them to stop me but it seemed like they didn't care less, as if they knew better than to question my late-night wanderings, and I left them be, focusing on the restless spirit that resided within me.
The palace gardens welcomed me with open arms, their lush greenery illuminated by the soft glow of the moon. I took a deep breath, filling my lungs with the scent of blooming flowers and fresh earth. It was a scent that always brought me a sense of peace, a reminder of the beauty that existed beyond the walls of the palace. I closed my eyes, reminiscing on the times my sister and I used to go on runs in our wolf form, without any care in the world. Gone were those days, now it's just me and my daily troubles.
As I walked along the winding paths, my footsteps muffled by the soft grass beneath my feet, I couldn't help but feel a sense of peacefulness. The weight of responsibility that had been pressing down on me seemed to lighten with each step, as if the night itself was carrying my burdens away.
And then, I heard it. A low growl, barely audible, but unmistakable. I turned my head, my heart pounding in my chest, and there it was. The wolf. it was here once again, just like the last time I went on a walk. A smile hit my lips at the sight of it and my heart began racing. Its eyes gleamed with a mixture of curiosity and recognition, as if it had been waiting for me.
It hurried towards me, bending to nuzzle my neck and lick my face and I chuckle, stroking it's soft fur. "Hey there, it's so nice to see you again. Did you miss me?" I asked and it growled, rubbing it's nose against my cheeks, his breathing deep like he was inhaling my scent in. I smiled at it, even as my wolf itched to the surface, perhaps wanting to come out after such a long time of staying quiet.
"Looks like you're in luck today," I murmured, staring into items eyes. "My wolf wants to go on a run tonight as well." I revealed and watched at it's ears perked up, it's tail wagging. I laughed, rubbing it's fur once more, before going to hide behind the huge trunks of trees to remove my clothing.
I shifted into my wolf form, feeling the familiar surge of power and freedom. Stepping out to it's view, I watched as it stared at me transfixed. It had to be, Alya, my wolf was a sight to behold. Slightly smaller than him, it had a brilliant white fur, that glowed exceptionally during the moonlit nights and exuded an elegant air. Alya let out a soft growl, beckoning to it and he moved closer. They rubbed bodies, each one getting familiarised with their scents. We stood there, two wolves in the moonlight, connected by an unspoken bond.
With a surge of energy, we took off into the night, our paws pounding against the earth in perfect synchrony. The wind rushed through my fur, carrying away the worries and doubts that had plagued me. In this moment, there was only the exhilaration of the hunt, the thrill of the chase.
We ran through the forest, our senses heightened, as if we were one being. The moonlight guided our path, casting ethereal shadows on the forest floor. We moved with a grace and agility that only wolves possessed, our bodies perfectly attuned to the rhythm of the night.
As the scent of prey filled the air, our instincts took over. We hunted together, a seamless dance of predator and prey. The thrill of the chase, the rush of adrenaline, filled every fiber of my being. In this moment, I felt alive, connected to the primal essence that resided within me.
After the hunt, we lay side by side, our breaths coming in steady rhythm. The moon bathed us in its gentle light, casting a silver glow over our fur. I turned my head to look at the wolf, its eyes filled with a mixture of contentment and something else, something I couldn't quite decipher. I tried to mind-link with it only to find out that had been blocked out as well. Which suprised me because only wolf who were high in ranks could block out mind-links. Which meant whoever this person was, had to be a member of nobility or royalty.
"One of these days, you're going to tell me who you are, aren't you?" I asked anyway through the mind-link. The wolf let out a low groan, understanding my words but it didn't respond. "How about during the Moon goddess festival, it's starting in a few days and it's lasting three nights. You can come in your human form and reveal yourself to me." I suggested. The wolf seemed to contemplate my words, its gaze fixed on the distant horizon.
I fell quiet afterwards, just basking in the moon light, feeling light hearted now that I was near this enigmatic wolf, who wouldn't stop snuggling with me. We stayed there until dawn, basking in the glow of the rising sun. As the first rays of light broke through the trees, I knew it was time to part ways. We ran back to the edge of the forest where I hifted back into my human form. Putting on my clothes, I went out to pat it's soft fur, leaving it with some words.
