Chapter 51 The Warning of the Dead

Chapter 51 The Warning of the Dead
Darius paced the war room like a caged beast, black necrotic armor creaking with every step. The dream would not leave him. Seraphine’s final words echoed relentlessly in his mind, Elyra’s voice, desperate and afraid.

“If he lives… don’t let him become the king.”

He slammed his clawed fist into the stone table, cracking it. “Why would she say that? Why would Elyra fear me becoming king?”

Ossian stood nearby, arms crossed, watching him with ancient patience. “Because every ruler eventually becomes a monster when given enough power. She knew you, Darius. She knew what ambition and betrayal could twist a good man into. She feared what you would have to become to win this war.”

Rhen leaned against the far wall, arms folded tightly. “Or maybe she feared exactly what you’re turning into right now. You’re disappearing, Commander. The man who once protected the weak is becoming someone who barely flinches at dead children in cages. You still have a choice. Don’t let the System take that away from you.”

Darius stopped pacing. The System pulsed in his mind, stronger than ever, offering new rewards for every act of calculated cruelty.

\[Cruelty bonus applied. Domain influence increased.\]
\[Thrall loyalty strengthened after recent village executions.\]
\[Emotional suppression recommended for optimal performance.\]

He hated how good the rewards felt. How clean. How simple.

“I keep hearing her,” Darius admitted quietly. “In the whispers of the dead. In the children we rescued. Even in the priestess’s eyes. She’s warning me. But I don’t know if I can stop.”

Ossian stepped closer. “You shouldn’t. Mercy is the crack through which empires fall. The Crown shows none. Why should you? Embrace what you are becoming. The Hollow Sovereign does not hesitate. He does not mourn. He conquers.”

Rhen pushed off the wall, voice rising. “And what happens when there’s nothing left of Darius Voss? When the only thing looking out of those green eyes is pure death? Elyra didn’t want that for you. Neither do I.”

Darius turned away from both of them, staring at the massive map of the frontier spread across the table. Red marks showed the Crown’s approaching forces. His own black markers showed his growing territory. The war was accelerating. And with every victory, the System pushed him harder toward complete detachment.

\[New quest available: Total Frontier Domination.\]
\[Reward: Major evolution boost. Emotional anchor removal.\]

The temptation was strong. So very strong.

He clenched his fists until the new bone armor creaked. “She told Seraphine not to let me become the king. That means Elyra saw this path. She knew what I would turn into if I kept going.”

Ossian’s voice was cold and certain. “Then she was wise, but ultimately wrong. Kings must become monsters to survive. History proves it. The kind ruler dies. The ruthless one builds empires.”

Rhen shook his head. “And what kind of empire will it be if there’s nothing left of the man who started it? You’re losing yourself, Commander. I can see it happening. Every time you sit on that throne, another piece of you disappears.”

Darius remained silent for a long time. The whispers of the dead grew louder in his mind, fragments of Elyra’s voice mixed with the countless souls bound to him. Some begged for mercy. Others demanded vengeance. All of them pulled at the fraying threads of his remaining humanity.

He finally spoke, voice low and strained. “I don’t know how to stop. The System… it rewards cruelty now more than strategy. Every time I hesitate, it punishes me with pain. Every time I embrace the monster, it gives me strength.”

Ossian smiled faintly. “Then embrace it fully.”

Rhen looked heartbroken. “Don’t. Please.”

Before Darius could answer, the System delivered a new notification, one he had never seen before. The text appeared in deep crimson, pulsing with ancient power.

\[TEMPORAL-ECHO FUNCTION: PARTIALLY ACTIVE.\]

Darius stiffened on the throne. The words sent a chill through his entire being. Temporal-echo. The hidden mechanic mentioned in the earliest System messages. The one tied to the loop. The one that suggested his future self might have orchestrated everything.

The fortress seemed to hold its breath around him.

Ossian noticed the change immediately. “What is it?”

Darius slowly rose from the throne, black armor gleaming as fresh power coursed through him. His glowing sockets burned brighter than ever.

“The future is speaking,” he whispered. “And it wants me to become the king Elyra feared.”

Rhen stepped forward, voice urgent. “Commander…”

But Darius was already walking toward the war table, the weight of destiny settling heavily upon his shoulders. The Hollow King was no longer just rising.

He was answering the call of a future that had already been written in blood.

And somewhere deep inside, the last fading fragments of Darius Voss wondered if there was still time to prove Elyra wrong.
