Chapter 50 The Dream Bridge

Chapter 50 The Dream Bridge
Seraphine woke in a place that was not her chamber.

The world around her was a blurred memory, blood-soaked battlefield mud mixed with soft golden sunlight. Corpses lay half-buried in the ground, yet wildflowers grew between them. The sky above shifted between stormy gray and warm evening light.

She stood in a simple white dress, barefoot. This was not a normal dream.

Then she saw him.

Darius stood several paces away, clad in the black necrotic armor that had begun growing from his bones. His glowing green sockets dimmed as he looked at her, confusion and raw pain etched across his monstrous features.

“Elyra…?” he whispered, voice echoing strangely in the dream space.

Seraphine’s breath caught. “This isn’t real. None of this is real.”

Darius took a slow step closer. “I thought the same. But I can feel you. Your Light. Your grief. Everything.” He looked down at his clawed hands, then back at her. “Why does your voice feel like surviving death?”

Seraphine’s hands trembled. She could feel the resonance stronger than ever, a living bridge between them. “I don’t know. I keep seeing her memories. Your wife. Elyra. They… they put her inside me. The Order stole her soul and forced it into this body. Tell me the truth. Who was she to you?”

Darius’s glowing sockets flickered. For a long moment, he simply stared at her, as if afraid she would vanish.

“She was everything,” he said quietly. “My wife. My light in a world of war. She made me laugh when I forgot how. She made me believe I could be more than just a commander.” His voice cracked. “They took her from me. After the battle. I thought she was dead. But now… looking at you… I feel her. I feel her looking back at me.”

Seraphine’s eyes filled with tears. “I keep hearing her scream your name. I keep feeling her love for you. It’s tearing me apart. Am I even real? Or am I just a cage for her soul?”

Darius moved closer until only a few feet separated them. The dream space around them shifted, flashes of their shared memories bleeding through. A sunlit garden. A wedding. A battlefield. Blood.

“I don’t know what you are,” he admitted, voice raw. “But when I look at you, the hollow place inside me feels… less empty. Your voice. Your eyes. They make me remember what it was like to be alive. To love someone so much that death couldn’t end it.”

Seraphine reached out hesitantly. Her fingers brushed his armored chest. The contact sent a jolt through both of them, silver and green light flaring where they touched.

“I was sent to kill you,” she whispered. “But every time I try, something inside me screams not to. Because she loved you. And some part of me… still does.”

Darius’s clawed hand gently covered hers, careful not to cut her. “I should hate your Light. It burns me. It weakens everything I am. But I can’t. Because when I hear you speak, it feels like I’m hearing her. Like she found a way back to me.”

The dream space trembled. Fragments of memories flashed faster, Elyra laughing, Elyra crying, Elyra being dragged away screaming his name.

Seraphine looked up at him, tears falling freely. “If I’m really her… then what am I supposed to do? The Order wants me to destroy you. But I can’t. I won’t.”

Darius’s glowing sockets softened with unbearable pain. “Then don’t. Stay with me. Help me end them. We were torn apart once. We don’t have to be again.”

Before she could answer, the dream began to collapse. The ground shook. The sky fractured. Elyra’s voice echoed all around them, soft, desperate, and full of love.

The last thing Seraphine saw before the vision broke was Darius reaching for her, his clawed hand trembling.

Seraphine woke with a gasp in her cathedral bed, silver light blazing around her body. Tears soaked her pillow. Her heart ached with emotions that belonged to two different souls now fighting for space inside her.

She sat up, pressing a hand to her chest.

“Darius…” she whispered into the darkness.

Darius woke violently on the black throne, dark energy exploding outward. His new armor creaked as he gripped the stone arms, breathing hard. The dream still burned in his mind, her face, her voice, her tears.

Rhen stood nearby, watching him with deep concern. “Commander? You were… talking in your sleep. You said her name again.”

Darius slowly rose from the throne, black mist swirling thicker than ever. The resonance with Seraphine had grown stronger. He could still feel her, the warmth, the confusion, the love that refused to die.

He looked out over his growing empire, claws flexing.

The war was no longer just about revenge.

It was about finding the woman who carried the only piece of his heart that had survived death.

And he would burn the entire kingdom to get her back.
