Chapter 52 The Future’s Shadow
Chapter 52 The Future’s Shadow
Darius stood alone in the deepest chamber beneath Ashfeld Threshold, the black throne pulsing with dark energy behind him. The air felt thick, heavy with something ancient and inevitable. The System had been unusually silent since the resonance with Seraphine, but now a new pressure built in his mind, a shadow reaching backward through time itself.
It started with fragments.
Flashes of burning kingdoms. The golden spires of Valtheris collapsing under endless waves of undead legions that stretched to the horizon. Rivers ran black with blood. Entire provinces reduced to silent graveyards where no living soul remained. Cities that had once shone with holy light now lay in ruins, their streets filled with nothing but bone and ash.
In every vision, the same figure sat upon a colossal black throne that towered over the ruined world like a monument to death.
An older version of himself.
The future Darius was taller, broader, his necrotic armor fully fused with his skeleton, forming a living crown of bone and shadow. His glowing green sockets burned with cold, absolute authority. Countless thralls knelt before him in perfect, terrifying silence. The very air seemed to bow in his presence.
Darius staggered, clutching the edge of a stone pillar as the visions intensified. He saw himself, older, colder, completely hollow, raising entire armies from mass graves with nothing more than a gesture. He watched cities fall not to war, but to his mere existence. The future Hollow King did not speak. He simply existed, and the world ended around him.
Then the older Darius slowly turned his head.
Their eyes met across time.
The future king smiled, a slow, knowing expression that sent ice through Darius’s veins.
\[“You still think this started with betrayal.”\]
The voice echoed directly inside his skull, layered with centuries of power, regret, and something far darker. It was his own voice, but stripped of every last trace of humanity, deeper, emptier, and infinitely more terrifying.
Darius dropped to one knee, claws scraping against the stone floor. “What are you?” he growled. “If you are me, show me the truth!”
The chamber around him dissolved completely.
He stood on a battlefield that stretched forever. Millions of undead marched beneath black banners that covered the sky. In the distance, the Holy Crown’s capital burned in an eternal pyre. And on a hill made entirely of corpses, the older Darius sat upon his colossal throne, watching everything with cold, absolute detachment.
\[“The betrayal was necessary,”\] the future king said, his voice rolling like thunder across the wasteland. \[“I orchestrated it. I needed to die. I needed to break completely. The System required a shattered soul to reach its full potential. Elyra’s death. Your death. The children. The villages. All of it was planned from the beginning.”\]
Darius roared in fury and denial. “Liar! I would never sacrifice her! I would never become this!”
\[“You already have.”\]
A new vision slammed into him, a memory that had not yet happened. Darius saw himself standing over Seraphine’s broken body, the resonance between them finally shattered by his own hand. He saw himself choosing power over love. Choosing the complete Hollow Sovereign path. Choosing to become the monster who would rule a kingdom of eternal bones.
\[“You still believe you fight for simple revenge,”\] the older version whispered, almost pitying. \[“But revenge was only the door. The System has always been guiding you toward ascension. Toward me. Toward the true ending. The one where the world belongs to the dead.”\]
Darius clutched his head as the visions intensified. Burning cities. Endless armies marching under his command. A world where no light remained. And at the center of it all, the future Hollow King watched him with something that might have been amusement or sorrow.
\[“You can still resist,”\] the future self said. \[“But you won’t. You never do. The resonance with her… it only delays the inevitable. In the end, you will choose the crown. You always choose the crown.”\]
The vision shattered violently.
Darius collapsed fully to the floor of the chamber, breathing hard though he needed no air. His new bone armor creaked and shifted as fresh mutations rippled across his body. The System pulsed with dark approval.
\[TEMPORAL-ECHO FUNCTION: 12% SYNCHRONIZED.\]
Ossian entered the chamber, drawn by the disturbance. “My King? Your power spiked violently. What did you see?”
Darius slowly pushed himself up from the stone, his glowing sockets burning with new, terrifying clarity. “The future. Me. Sitting on a throne made from the bones of the entire world. And I… I planned all of this. The betrayal. My death. Everything.”
Rhen appeared behind Ossian, face pale with shock. “Commander… that can’t be true. You wouldn’t do that. You wouldn’t sacrifice everything just to become… this.”
Darius rose to his full height. The black necrotic armor continued to spread, fusing more deeply with his skeleton. “It is true. The System has been guiding me toward this from the very beginning. The future me… he orchestrated his own fall just to become what I am turning into.”
Ossian smiled faintly, a cold gleam in his ancient eyes. “Then the path is clear. Embrace it fully. Become what you are meant to be. The Crown will fall. The world will kneel. And you will finally have your revenge.”
Rhen stepped forward, voice urgent and pained. “Don’t listen to him. This is exactly what Elyra feared. You’re losing yourself piece by piece. If you keep going down this road, there won’t be anything left of the man she loved.”
Darius remained silent for a long moment, the weight of destiny pressing down upon him like never before. The temporal echo had spoken.
And it had already won.
He turned toward the war table, claws flexing at his sides. The future version of himself had seemed completely hollow. No grief. No love. No doubt.
Only power.
And somewhere deep inside, the last fading fragments of Darius Voss screamed in silent agony as they were buried beneath layers of bone, shadow, and inevitable ascension.
The Hollow King had heard the warning from his future self.
And he welcomed it.
