Chapter 49 The Hollow Crown
Chapter 49 The Hollow Crown
Darius sat upon the black throne, the entire Fortress of Ash pulsing beneath him like a living heart. The rescued children’s whispers still echoed in his mind. Elyra’s fragments were spreading through his Domain, stirring emotions he could no longer fully suppress.
The System pulsed with a new, blood-red notification.
\[Evolution Path Unlocked: Hollow Sovereign\]
\[Requirements: Expand Domain. Consume additional humanity. Surrender remaining mortal anchors.\]
\[Warning: Irreversible personality erosion. Increased power. Loss of self.\]
Ossian stood at the base of the dais, arms crossed. “This is the next step, my King. True power. The kind that will let you crush the Holy Crown beneath your heel. Accept it. Mercy and hesitation are weaknesses that will get you killed again.”
Rhen paced angrily in front of the throne. “Don’t listen to him, Commander. You’re already changing too fast. The man I followed into battle is disappearing. If you take this path, there might not be anything left of Darius Voss.”
Darius gripped the arms of the throne, claws digging into the ancient stone. “Explain,” he growled at the System.
\[Hollow Sovereign Evolution: Full dominion over death. Domain expansion multiplier. Thrall command capacity tripled. Emotional suppression for perfect strategic clarity. Cost: Progressive loss of human identity and emotional capacity.\]
Ossian stepped closer. “This is what you need. The priestess is weakening you. The children stir memories that make you hesitate. Surrender what remains of your old self and become something greater. An empire requires a true king, not a haunted man.”
Rhen stopped pacing and looked up at Darius with raw concern. “You’re still in there. I see it when you look at the kids. When you spared the villagers. When you protected her on the battlefield. If you give that up, what’s left? Just another monster wearing your face?”
Darius closed his glowing sockets. The resonance with Seraphine still burned inside him. Elyra’s laughter. Her scream. The warmth he had felt for one brief moment. It made him weak. It made him doubt. But it also made him feel alive in a way the cold power of the throne never could.
He opened his eyes and looked at his two lieutenants.
“Revenge is all I have left,” he said quietly. “The Crown took everything. My life. My wife. My honor. If becoming something more terrible is what it takes to destroy them… then so be it.”
Ossian smiled faintly. “Wise choice.”
Rhen looked stricken. “Commander… please. Don’t do this.”
Darius leaned back on the throne. “System. Begin the evolution trial.”
\[Hollow Sovereign Ascension Trial Initiated.\]
Pain erupted across his entire body. Darius roared as black necrotic armor began growing directly from his bones. Thick plates of dark, living bone pushed outward through his skin, sealing over with glossy, obsidian-like surfaces. His shoulders broadened further. Spikes erupted along his spine. His claws lengthened and sharpened into deadly talons.
The mutations were violent and relentless. Every inch of his body was being rewritten into something more monstrous, more powerful. The cold detachment he had fought to maintain flooded through him stronger than ever, drowning out the last warm echoes of humanity.
Rhen stepped back, horror clear on his face. “Commander… you’re disappearing.”
Darius rose from the throne, now even taller, his new armor gleaming with dark power. The black crown emblem on his chest pulsed with green energy. He flexed his clawed hands, feeling the raw strength coursing through him.
“I am still here,” he said, though his voice had grown deeper, colder, more layered with necrotic resonance. “But the Hollow King must rise fully if we are to win this war.”
Ossian knelt in reverence. “Hail the Hollow Sovereign.”
Darius looked out over his Domain. The pain of the evolution was fading, replaced by a terrifying clarity. Emotions felt distant now. Revenge felt clean. Simple. Pure.
But deep in the recesses of his mind, a small, fading voice, the last whisper of Darius Voss, screamed in silent agony as it was buried beneath layers of bone and power.
He ignored it.
The black necrotic armor continued to spread and harden across his body, growing directly from his skeleton like a second, living skin.
The Hollow King had taken another irreversible step toward becoming something far worse than the monster the kingdom feared.
And he welcomed it.
