Chapter 126

Chapter 126
I thought I was going to shift, but I did not. The pain persisted for a while and then stopped. I felt so tired; I could only lie on the bed staring at nothing.
I began to think what it would feel like if the Demon King saw me in my wolf form.
Would he be scared? Or would that make him dislike me?
I was happy I did not shift but was also unhappy; I thought I was going to shift into Twilight with the pain I felt.
My eyes began to feel heavy and no matter how much I tried to keep them open, I did not succeed.
I do not know how long I slept, but by the time I opened my eyes, it was already morning. I stood up from the bed and quickly went into the bathroom to take a bath before getting dressed in one of the available clothes in the wardrobe.
I left the room and headed to the kitchen to make breakfast. I was surprised to meet the Demon King already doing that.
"Good morning, Demon King," I greeted.
"There is no one here. You can call me Lucian," he answered. "What do you want for breakfast?"
"Anything," I mumbled. I had nothing in mind for breakfast but when he stared at me, I changed my mind. "Scrambled eggs."
He nodded. "You can wait in the living room."
I left the kitchen and went to the living room. With my phone absent, I decided to watch a movie instead. Nathan walked in a few minutes later.
"Good morning, Karen," he said with a smile, and that made me smile.
"Good morning. Are you just coming back?"
He nodded. "Yes, I..." He sniffed. "What's smelling so good? Don't tell me Lucian is the one making breakfast."
"Yes, he..."
"I guess he is," Nathan answered and stood up. "I will be right back."
I took a deep breath and went on to watch the movie I had abandoned the moment Nathan walked in. He returned a few minutes later with the Demon King.
"Breakfast is ready, Karen," he announced. "Come over."
I stood up to join them at the dining table. The Demon King placed the plate of scrambled eggs and a cup of milky coffee in front of me and then left to receive a call.
I took a sip of the coffee and my lips curved into a smile; just as I love it.
"It must be to your taste," Nathan said. "Lucian was certain you love enough milk in your coffee." Nathan dropped the spoon in his hand. "You won't believe he insisted that I had more milk when I said it was enough."
My eyes widened a bit. I wasn't too surprised that the Demon King knew that I love enough milk in my coffee, but was more surprised that he insisted more milk should be added.
Doesn't he dislike me?
"You think I do?" I heard his voice from behind and I froze.
I did not forget that he could hear my voice. I only thought he would be too busy with the phone call, to listen to my thoughts.
"What is going on between you two? Why do you look scared, Karen?" Nathan asked but I shook my head.
"I-i am not scared."
I had stuttered when I spoke, but I could only hope Nathan didn't notice it, and even if he did, he wouldn't pursue it further. Luck was on my side; he said nothing about it.
"Eat up quickly. You still have to go back to school before class starts," the Demon King said.
Wasn't class supposed to start in a week?
"Your class starts today," he answered and I furrowed my brows.
My class? Am I having a different class? I thought Voidspire always treated everyone equally? Did he make them do that? What are...
"Are you done having those thoughts?" He asked staring at me.
I adjusted myself quickly and went on to eat. For the rest of the meal, I said nothing. I tried to think of nothing either, humming every time.
He dropped the spoon in his hand, making a loud noise. "Can you stop humming!"
I was so scared of his voice that the spoon in my hand fell to the ground. I couldn't look him in the face either; his eyes were red like a coal of fire.
"Lucian, you are scaring her," Nathan said. "Stop staring at her like that."
"Up!," he said. "To your room."
I stood up quietly not daring to wonder what had just happened. I headed straight to my room and burst into tears the moment I was in.
What caused the change in attitude? I thought we were cool? Why did he have to yell at me like that? Why were his eyes so scary?
I sat on the floor, my hands on my lap, covering my face.
I heard a knock on the door and I raised my head up.
"Karen? Are you okay?" I heard Nathan's voice. "Can I come in? Can you open the door?"
Nathan sounded so worried, I had to stand up and open the door for him. He walked in and patted my shoulder.
"He did not mean to yell at you like that. He's in a bad mood."
And I had to suffer for that?
Nathan sighed. "You must have been shocked. You cried so well. Your eyes are red."
"When are we leaving?" I muttered.
I was no longer comfortable staying around him and hoped I could return to school soon.
"He asked me to take you back," Nathan answered.
"He is not coming with us?"
"He has something urgent to do. He left already."
I nodded. That feels like a relief to me.
"Is there anything you want to take from your room? We have to leave soon. He doesn't want you to miss your class."
"Do you know what the class is about?"
Nathan nodded. "Don't you want to have more posts, to put Nyra in her place? The class is to help you do that."
Why does he always hurt me, yet he does his best to help me behind closed doors?
"You are wondering why he seems to treat you badly but still helps you?"
I nodded. Isn't that enough to wonder?
"Well," Nathan began. "I think he..." His phone began to ring. He stared at me. "It's Lucian. I have to go."
I nodded as he made for the door. He stopped and faced me. "He wants us out of the house in five minutes."
I nodded again. Aside from my clothes, I have nothing else to carry.
"I will be out soon."
Nathan left and I quickly opened the wardrobe to take my clothes. I placed them in one of the bags I saw on the table and then headed out to join Nathan.
"Ready?" He asked and I nodded.
He picked up his car keys and we left the house. We entered the car and he drove off.
"Are you not curious to know why he called?" Nathan asked.
I took a deep breath. It must be about me.
