CHAPTER 34: THE NAME
Screen light up after few seconds of dead silent.
Like that person standing at edge of cliff, hand grip tight the railing, wondering last time jump or turn back run away.
Raven not rush. She already learned after so many days night this, time itself will force people must choose.
Then he appear.
A man over fifty, hair little silver, dark gray suit but collar crooked, tie loose loose. No watch on hand. Eyes… tired. Really tired, the kind tired cannot act.
His voice hoarse, slow slow.
“I am the one sign first time. And I want say why.”
Whole control room like lose breath.
Lucas whisper: “He… really show real face just like that?”
Raven shake head light.
“No. Being force show.”
He take deep breath, not for calm down, but like to take the hit.
“I sign because scared,” he say straight, no circle around.
“Not scared of you girls. Scared the system. Scared if I not sign, other people will sign – and I no chance anymore to squeeze in.”
One long sigh together spread in room.
Not pity.
The kind “so that’s why” bitter bitter.
“I told myself turn off forum just ten minutes only then… less harm more,” he continue.
“I call that risk management. Sound cool very much.”
He lift face, look straight into camera.
Eyes red red, but not avoid.
“I wrong.”
No sorry or explain. Just two words, heavy like lead.
Raven step close to micro, voice calm strange:
“Now you want say why?”
He silent one beat. Then answer, voice smaller, but clear every word:
“Because that morning… in those ten minutes… nobody sign. And I suddenly understand, the thing we call ‘security’ turn out only fear being shared equal to everybody.”
Niko swallow dry, the swallow sound very clear.
Raven ask continue, soft only: “You know this thing will make you lose what?”
He smile pale, smile no happy at all:
“Know. Career seat. Maybe honor too.”
“And?” Raven still ask.
He look somewhere far far, then say, almost whisper:
“And I will sleep be able.”
Raven nod, very slow.
“You already sign the new document,” she say. “So please read first line.”
He bend down the paper in front, voice shaking but try read clear each word:
“No one… allowed turn off memory… for other person.”
Whole forum like stop breathing. Not noisy. Only a wave of silence deep until creepy.
He put pen down. His name appear, clear, no hide, no nickname.
Kade breathe out hard: “Real name… first time.”
Lucas look Raven, eyes bright up:
“You just turn one signature… into confession.”
Raven shake head. “No. He himself turn it into confession.”
After that, forum not explode. It calm down.
Other people still talk, but slower. Careful more. No tell story anymore. They start face.
One female voice flat flat speak up:
“I used to draft appendix. I not sign. But I fix the words.”
Raven only note. No judge.
Another person:
“I silent because I think silent is neutral.”
Raven reply, short: “Silent also is a choice.”
No blame no accuse. Just call it by real name.
End of day 34.
Document get publish – no formal, no ceremony. Just open file, where names line up straight straight.
No one stand first.
Niko lean back chair, smile tired:
“You know what… first time I see power… it slow down.”
Raven answer, voice very quiet: “Because it got seen.”
Lucas stand beside window, look out city.
“Later people will ask who start it.”
Raven look at CORE SILENT, light stable, no blink anymore.
“No one,” she say. “Only… no one turn it off anymore.”
Device vibrate. Last message of day.
PROPOSAL ESTABLISH WITNESS COUNCIL – INDEPENDENT
Kade raise eyebrow. “New seat.”
Raven nod light. “And window,” she say. “Always leave open.”
She turn off micro. Not to end.
But to step out the connection.

Night come.
Raven stand alone outside balcony. City below still noisy, but no scream anymore.
She open metal box, look at Evelyn tape roll long time.
Then gently close.
“Not need yet mom,” she whisper. “Mom rest go.”
She turn back. Not look again.
When list reach 27 names, new notification pop up – cold, short:
“PROPOSAL CRIMINAL INVESTIGATION OF MEMORY DELETION PROCEDURES.”
Raven smile light, very light.
Memory finally have name.
Now turn of… responsibility must have shape.
