Chapter 25 Security Takeover
Chapter 25 Security Takeover
Chapter 25: Security Takeover
"Emergency takeover of water security."
Four words repeated on every screen like a creepy incantation, echoing in the cramped space of the base.
They were formal enough to hide the panic bubbling underneath, vague enough to open the door for any dark schemes Severance might be brewing.
Each repetition, like a knife slash in the air, reminding that the outside world was changing, and no one could escape.
Raven stared at the text, her eyes unblinking, but inside, a storm was raging.
She felt the weight of it, not just a declaration, but a direct challenge, a risky move by the enemy.
Her heart beat faster, but she kept her voice calm, sharp as a blade.
"They just stepped into the light," she said, her voice trembling slightly with suppressed anger.
"No more using the Board's hands. No more puppeteers pulling strings from behind the scenes. Now, they're openly displaying their power, as if they think the world will bow."
Kade nodded, his face darkening, his eyes filled with deep worry. His voice was low and hoarse, like a whisper from an old wound.
"And when an organization accepts emergency authority... it also accepts responsibility. A burden we can use to strangle them. But you know, responsibility can be a double-edged sword."
"Yes," Raven replied, a bitter smile briefly crossing her lips.
"And responsibility is what they hate most. It forces them to face the consequences, the souls erased by their hands. They'd rather die than explain."
\---
The temporary base switched to emergency status, the air becoming stifling like a living grave.
Lights dimmed, casting long, distorted shadows on the cold concrete walls. Electromagnetic waves were distorted, cutting off unnecessary communications, turning the place into an isolated fortress.
All equipment ran independently, the hum of cooling fans echoing like a frantic heartbeat. Niko, her hands trembling slightly from adrenaline, shut down the auxiliary channels, keeping only one open channel, where Severance's announcement still flickered like a curse.
"What do we do now?" Niko asked, her voice breaking under tension, her eyes darting between screens.
"Stay calm, wait for them to slip up, or strike straight at their heart? I can't take this feeling anymore, like we're being hunted in our own den."
Raven looked at the SILENT CORE on the table, the metallic object shimmering under the dim light, then turned her gaze to Marrow.
He sat slumped in his chair, a towel wrapped around his shoulders, his body still trembling slightly from the nightmare of the mobile tank.
His face was pale, his eyes red from indelible memories.
A sharp pain pierced Raven's hearthe was a victim, but now, he was a weapon.
"We change the question," Raven said, her voice firm, cutting through the chaos.
"Don't ask 'What is Severance doing' anymorethat question just makes us chase their tail. Ask 'Where did Severance get the authority from'. We have to dig deep into the roots, overturn their foundation."
Lucas, with his sharp legal instinct, understood immediately. His face lit up, but mixed with vague fear.
"The authorization," he whispered, excited yet anxious.
"Signatures from the Board, exact time stamps, and binding terms. If we prove it's illegal, their entire empire will crumble."
"And the conditions," Raven continued, her eyes flashing with iron determination.
"Emergency authority always has conditionsa real crisis, confirmed by independent agencies. Without that, everything is just a sham."
Kade dove into the old legal archives, dusty documents forgotten from previous "temporary" takeovers.
His hands flipped quickly, sweat beading on his forehead, as if every second was a battle. Finally, he stopped, his voice filled with hope and doubt.
"There it is! All takeover powers need to be activated by a confirmed city-level crisis. There must be physical evidence, and at least three government agencies must agree. If they're faking it, we can turn the tables."
Raven smiled very slightly, but that smile carried the weight of a vow.
"So," she said, her voice echoing like a declaration of war,
"we'll see what they confirm. And we'll expose their lies to the light."
The noon news exploded like a bomb.
Severance held an emergency press conferenceno flashy logo, no bright colors, just a spokesperson standing before a gray backdrop, his face impassive like a stone statue. His voice was even, cold like metal clashing.
"Due to a serious water system crisis, Severance temporarily takes over to ensure community safety."
Questions poured from reporters, like arrows shot in the dark: "Where's the evidence? How long is the deadline? What oversight mechanism to prevent abuse of power?"
The spokesperson skillfully evaded, answering questions no one asked, his voice repeating like a broken recording. That falseness made the base's atmosphere even more stifling.
Raven nodded, her patience running out, replaced by boiling anger.
"They're dodging the deadline," she said, clenching her fists. "That's their biggest weakness. The deadline will force them to explain, and they know that. Hit them thereimmediately."
She signaled Niko, her voice sharp as a command. "Prepare the rebuttal. We'll expose them before the whole world."
Lucas placed his hand on the control panel, his fingers trembling under pressure, but the SILENT CORE blazed brightly, verifying the data was ready. The room's air became so tense it could be cut into piecesragged breaths, echoing heartbeats.
"Three... two... one," Niko counted, her voice dry, full of suspense.
Raven pressed PLAY, and the world changed.
On the public channel, right in the middle of the press conference, a complex graph appeared, overlapping time stamps like a deadly spiderweb: the water crisis, activation of emergency authority, the mobile tank... and then, a terrifying gap before that.
"Severance claims the crisis started at 08:10,"
Raven said, her voice clear and persuasive, echoing through every screen.
"But pressure pipe data, verified by independent sources, undeniable, shows the mobile tank activated at 07:42. They acted first, creating the crisis to cover their crimes!"
The screen moved, the graph came alive, exposing the raw truth. Silence spread like a tsunami wave, swallowing all noise.
"Emergency authority," Raven continued, her voice now full of fury, "was activated after the people-erasing tool had already run. This is not reliefit's a systematic genocide plot!"
Lucas interjected, his voice calm but full of legal authority: "Legal conditions were not met. The takeover authority is completely invalid. Severance has violated the basic laws of society."
The spokesperson froze, his face contorted in shock, his mouth stammering incoherently.
Public questions erupted like a volcanonot whispers anymore, but angry roars spreading throughout the city.
Severance abruptly cut the signal, the screen went black, but it was too late.
Niko chuckled softly, a smile mixed with relief and fear. "Cutting the signal is an admission. We've pierced their shell."
The response came as fast as a storm. Unmarked cars sped down the streets, drones buzzed low over rooftops, creating a terrifying hum. Invisible pressure built on the base, like a tightening noose, making everyone in the room feel suffocated.
Severance was no longer hiding; they were hunting.
Kade stared at the radar, his face pale. "They're not attacking directly," he said, his voice trembling with stress.
"They're surrounding us. They're pressuring us, turning us into mice in a trap."
"To force us to be silent," Niko replied, her hands gripping the controls, her eyes flashing determination.
"They think pressure will make us shrink, swallow our words."
Raven stood up, her body taut like a spring ready to release. "No," she said, her voice echoing with challenge.
"This is to force us out. They want a confrontation, want to crush us before the truth spreads. But they miscalculated."
She turned to Marrow, her eyes lingering on his facepale, full of invisible scars from what he had witnessed.
"Are you ready? This is the decisive moment. Your words could change everything, but they could also end us."
Marrow swallowed hard, his throat dry, memories of the mobile tank flooding back like a nightmare. He trembled, but then, a fire ignited in his eyes.
"It's time," he whispered, his voice full of emotion. "I can't live with this burden anymore. I must speak out, even if it costs me my life."
Lucas placed his hand on his shoulder, a warm gesture in the storm. "We're here," he said, his voice full of support. "You're not alone in this fight."
Raven opened a direct channel, unobscured, no script. No flashy backdrop, no complex graphs. Just Marrow, a gaunt man, soaked clothes, hollow face but eyes blazing with will.
"I am Marrow," he said, his voice initially shaky but gradually steadier, looking straight into the camera as if facing fate.
"I operated the mobile tank on direct orders from Severance. Before the so-called 'water crisis' occurred. I activated it, witnessed the souls erased."
He took a deep breath, tears streaming down his cheeks, but he didn't stop.
"This takeover is just a cover for a systematic people-erasing processa crime against humanity. I followed orders, but my conscience won't allow silence."
Severance cut the channel again, the screen flickered off. But the recording had spread like a virusthrough social media, messages, every corner of the city. Marrow's confession was not just words; it was an emotional bomb, igniting anger from millions.
Kade exhaled heavily, his shoulders relaxing slightly. "We just shattered their 'temporary' shield. The truth is out there now, uncontrollable."
"Not yet," Raven said, her eyes still vigilant. "We just set a countdown. They will counterattack, but now they have to play by the rules."
She looked at Lucas, her voice urgent. "How long do we have?"
"Thirty-six hours," Lucas replied, his voice tired but full of determination.
"Before they change their cover, their name, restructure to evade. That's the time we need to lock down every legal condition."
"So we use every second in those thirty-six hours," Raven said, clenching her fists. "To turn the truth into unbreakable chains."
Night fell, the city lit up beneath Ravennot with the light of peace, but of chaos, with phone screens raised, replaying the confession nonstop.
She stood alone by the window, cold wind blowing through the cracks, carrying the smell of metal and fear.
Kade stepped beside her, his voice warm but full of worry.
"You're pushing them to the brink, Raven. You're turning them into wild beasts, ready to tear apart anything."
"No," Raven replied, turning to look at him, her eyes determined amidst the inner storm.
"I'm asking questions they can't answer. Questions about justice, about lives lost. If they choose silence, they'll dig their own grave."
"And if they choose violence? If they decide to wipe us out to shut us up?" Kade asked, his hands gripping her shoulders, fear evident.
Raven looked down at the streetpeople passing by, their faces twisted in anger and hope, their phones becoming weapons.
"Violence needs darkness to exist," she said, her voice echoing with confidence.
"But they just turned the lights on themselves. The light of truth is shining on everything, and their darkness will vanish."
The device vibrated violentlya strange encrypted message appeared.
"COMMITTEE REQUESTS PUBLIC HEARING IN 24 HOURS."
Niko whistled softly, excitement mixed with surprise. "Public hearing. This is a turning pointthey can't avoid it anymore."
Lucas laughed tiredly, but that smile carried hope. "Real light. No more dark corners, no more lies."
Raven nodded, a new strength filling her. "We'll go," she said. "And this time... we won't bring water, won't bring evidence easily destroyed."
She gripped the SILENT CORE tightly, feeling its weight like a promise. "We bring memories. Memories of Marrow, of the victims, and of ourselves. Memory is eternal, and it will be our final weapon."
\---
When the announcement of the hearing spread like wildfire, another warning suddenly piled onsoftly but coldly like a sharp blade:
"SEVERANCE'S EMERGENCY IMMUNITY PROPOSAL."
Raven chuckled lightly, a smile full of contempt and determination.
They requested immunity... before facing the truth. A desperate act, but also an implicit admission. The battle had now entered its climax.
