Chapter 164: Biohazard?
Chapter 164: Biohazard?
Alvin glanced over at Russell, who had just gotten his stomach stitched up and was already asking for a drink. He couldn't help but shake his head at how much of a jerk this guy was.
The first thing Russell did when he woke up was curse Ethan's dead mother, like, three times!
Alvin looked at Ethan, who didn't seem to care, and figured that a drink wouldn't kill Russell. Maybe Ethan was even hoping this idiot would mess up so he could "save" him.
Pouring a glass of whiskey, Alvin handed it to Russell and said, "Take it easy, man. Seriously, what's going on with you? Did all the S.H.I.E.L.D. folks bite the dust? Why'd you come to me?"
Russell looked around, recognizing some of the faces at Alvin's place. He gave a nod to Frank, showing they knew each other, though not too well.
He downed the whiskey in one gulp, wincing in pain but still managing a smile.
This suit-wearing cowboy casually said, "I'm working solo 'cause I noticed something weird with the vampires lately, but our black director wants me to sit tight and wait for orders."
He grabbed a roll of paper to wipe his stomach wound, giving Ethan a look like he'd seen a ghost, and said, "You got some skills. Guess I misjudged you."
Ethan, ever the good sport, flipped him the bird in thanks, knowing the credit wasn't all his; Alvin's red vines played a big part.
Alvin, curious about this guy who dared to defy Nick Fury, asked, "How'd you end up like this? And how do you know that big rat?"
Russell pursed his lips, signaling for another drink, and said, "I found out some stuff. There's intel that some new breed of vampires is lurking in New York's sewers, and they look nasty.
They attack everything, even other vampires. I wanted to investigate, which is my job, but our black director shot me down."
Alvin poured him another drink, encouraging him to go on. Hearing someone badmouth Nick Fury made Alvin happy; Nick Fury was definitely not a good guy.
Russell took a small sip of whiskey, which was tough for him right now, but he just wanted a taste.
After swallowing, he said with some difficulty, "I went to track down the sewer vampires and ran into that big rat. Technically, he saved my life. Without him, I wouldn't have made it out of those crazy sewers."
Tony, recalling Russell's condition, said with some horror, "So that's how you treat your savior? Being your savior must suck!"
Russell shrugged, spreading his hands with a strong jerk vibe, and said, "What was I supposed to do? Give him a hug?"
Two streets away, Nick Fury and Phil stood at an apartment window, with an ambulance and several black Chevy SUVs parked below, packed with a dozen fully armed combat personnel.
Nick Fury let out a long breath and said to Phil, "Tell the field agents to pull back. Russell's probably alive; that jerk really knows how to stir things up.
And how does he know Alvin?"
Phil thought for a moment and said, "I only know they met once in L.A. Russell seems to get along with Alvin. Maybe that's why he went to Alvin for help."
Nick Fury rubbed his temples, clearly frustrated, and said, "We can't let them mess up the plan we've been working on for over a decade. The stakes are too high.
Alvin's a real tough bastard. If he gets involved, things will get messy.
And how did Tony get mixed up in this? Damn it!"Phil glanced outside, hesitated, and said, "Alvin's a good guy. Some vampires biting the dust in the sewers might actually be a win for us.
They're not just going after vampires anymore; they're attacking regular folks too. Honestly, their numbers are getting out of hand.
We can't stop Alvin. If he wants to take out some of those freaks, why should we get in his way?"
Nick Fury looked at Phil and said seriously, "Do you know why Russell got benched for this job?"
Phil shook his head, indicating he didn't know.
Nick Fury continued, "Everything we're doing now is to push that plan forward.
Don't give me that look, Phil. It's not the 'Blood God Plan'; that's just a side perk.
If this plan works, we can either control the vampires completely or wipe them out. That's the goal.
And Russell's too hot-headed. He'd just go on a killing spree. We can't do that. Even if we go to war, it has to be after the plan succeeds.
Then it'll be the military's problem.
If every country was as tough as the Celestia Federation, we'd have a lot less trouble!
We're agents, but Russell always sees himself as a warrior."
Phil didn't know the deeper reasons, but he understood that some things shouldn't be asked. After thinking for a moment, he said, "So Alvin's in the mix now. What do we do? Tony's already called in his bodyguard to bring weapons."
Nick Fury thought for a few seconds and said, "Find a way to divert Chad Norma. He's crucial. With him around, the vampire civil war won't stop. The old vampires can only be taken out by their own kind; we can't touch them.
If our plan works, then it won't matter if Chad Norma gets taken out.
Let him live a bit longer! Leave the vampire 'Reapers' on Hellfire Boulevard to Alvin. He'll be happy to take out those monsters."
Phil nodded reluctantly, hesitated, and said, "Chad Norma's attacked too many regular people to build his forces. Can we really control him? That guy's a maniac!"
Nick Fury said coldly, "We need Chad Norma to keep the old vampires busy. This way, our plan has a better shot at success.
Don't look at me like that, Phil. I'm not heartless. This plan is crucial for the world. If someone has to go to hell for it, it should be me!"
Phil nodded. He trusted Nick Fury and didn't say anything more, turning to arrange the work of others through the earpiece.
Alvin listened to Russell's story, thought for a moment, and had no clue. Dealing with these S.H.I.E.L.D. folks was always confusing and frustrating. Luckily, he liked to keep things simple.
Since there were vampires in the sewers of Hellfire Boulevard, he'd just kill them all. No need to overthink it. If there was something special about this, Nick Fury should be showing up at the restaurant by now.
Alvin didn't believe S.H.I.E.L.D. would just leave Whispering Pines Cafe alone. They probably knew as soon as Russell walked in. But since they didn't show up, it meant they thought they could handle it. That had nothing to do with Alvin; he'd do what he thought was necessary.
Nick Fury had once told Alvin why Dracula couldn't die, and Alvin agreed, but that didn't include other vampires, especially the kind of monsters Russell mentioned.
Russell said they were irrational and very dangerous, and anyone killed by them would turn into that kind of monster. This made Alvin think of something bad, like a "biochemical crisis," which would be terrifying, especially for regular folks!
