Chapter 274 Embarking on a New Life

Chapter 274 Embarking on a New Life

The call connected, and Tyler relayed Daisy's request.

Vincent's voice came through from the other end, tinged with helplessness. "Daisy, stop this."

He said, "Vanessa's in emergency care. You need to come to the hospital."

Whether Daisy was willing or not, she had no choice but to get in the car with Tyler and head to the hospital.

Fortunately, she'd anticipated this scenario, so what she held was only a copy of the documents.

As long as the complaint bore the plaintiff's original signature, an authorized representative could submit it to the court along with the evidence.

And Ethan was already on his way to the courthouse with all the necessary materials.

By her calculations, he should be arriving any minute now.

Daisy arrived at the hospital by car and was escorted by Tyler into the ward.

Playing her part to perfection, she clutched the document folder tightly in her hands. When she saw Vincent, her expression darkened as she demanded, "What, Mr. Black wants to protect a criminal?"

To anyone watching this tense scene, it would naturally appear that all her documents had been intercepted, and without Vincent's approval, there could be no lawsuit.

Vincent looked at her difficult demeanor with considerable frustration.

Because from beginning to end, he'd never actually considered the possibility that Daisy wouldn't want to remarry him.

In truth, he'd only brought out that evidence to win Daisy over.

He didn't really want Vanessa to face consequences.

He said to Daisy, "I know you resent her, but Vanessa's already learned her lesson."

Daisy laughed coldly. "Oh really? What lesson? Whether she slits her wrists or hangs herself, doesn't news of her self-harm always reach Mr. Black's ears?"

Vincent froze.

When he'd heard that Vanessa had slit her wrists while wearing the outfit from their first meeting back in school, in the apartment they'd once shared, he'd rushed over to save her.

But hearing Daisy put it this way, he suddenly realized.

Vanessa was using this as leverage, gambling for his sympathy and pity.

Daisy continued, "Don't give me any garbage about how she's already paid the price. Once she recovers from today's emergency care, she'll come after me again just the same. Let's talk about paying the price after someone's actually dead!"

"Daisy!" Vincent's voice sharpened. "Do you two really have to take this to a life-or-death conclusion?"

Though anger still flickered in Daisy's eyes, beneath it lay a deep calm and clarity. If she still loved Vincent even a little, she would certainly be hurt by his favoritism, but now she simply said flatly, "The problem isn't on my end."

Vincent couldn't argue with that.

Just then, the emergency room doors opened and the doctor emerged. "Fortunately you brought her in time. The patient will be fine."

As they wheeled the unconscious Vanessa into a ward, Tyler received a phone call.

When he returned after taking the call, he glanced at Daisy with an extremely complicated expression, tinged with a hint of admiration.

There weren't many people in this world who dared to go head-to-head with Mr. Black like this and actually succeed in outmaneuvering him!

He then said to Vincent, "Mr. Black, I just got word. Ethan submitted all those documents to the court. They're already processing them."

"What?" Vincent turned to Daisy, his eyes filled with shock.

Only then did Daisy smile.

She said, "Vincent, if it were anyone else, you never would have been so careless. That alone shows just how much you've underestimated me all these years!"

It was through this incident that Daisy finally understood just how hopeless Vincent must have thought she was.

In Vincent's eyes, she was apparently the type of woman who would grit her teeth and endure anything for the sake of her child, for the sake of remarrying.

Weak. Without a shred of backbone.

No wonder he'd never truly looked at her before. Even she didn't like this version of herself.

And just as she said these words, she was surprised to discover that alongside the surprise and irritation in Vincent's eyes, a spark of interest and appreciation had ignited.

In that moment, she understood why Vincent had brought up remarriage.

She also understood why everyone else said he had ulterior motives regarding her.

Vincent didn't actually like women who loved him to the point of losing themselves. He preferred intelligent women.

Too bad by the time she understood this, she no longer loved him.

Because if a woman were truly intelligent, she wouldn't lose herself in love, wouldn't willingly swallow needles. Instead, she'd choose to build her career, or marry someone who could respect her as an equal, someone whose heart truly aligned with hers.

Vincent seemed about to say something, but then Felix's clear voice rang out from beyond the door. "Daisy!"

"You can't go in there!" Sounds of a scuffle came from outside.

But Felix only said, "Daisy, don't be afraid. I'm here."

Daisy stood and opened the door to find Felix's people facing off against Vincent's.

He first confirmed she was safe, then smoothly positioned himself protectively in front of her. He glanced at Vanessa on the bed. He didn't even need to ask to know what had happened.

He said to Vincent, "Since Mr. Black is keeping his little girlfriend company, Daisy and I won't disturb you."

His words were courteous and dignified, forming a stark contrast to the standoff between their subordinates, though traces of tension still permeated the air.

But Vincent only looked at Daisy. "The remarriage, think it over again."

He ordered his people to let them pass without obstruction.

Still, Daisy could feel that gaze following her until their figures disappeared down the corridor.

Only when she got into Felix's car did Daisy finally breathe a sigh of relief.

She turned, only to find herself pulled into Felix's embrace.

He held her tightly and said, "I almost thought I was going to lose you."

Daisy paused before returning the embrace. "You won't. Vincent won't do anything to me. After all, I'm Luna's mother."

Vanessa might dare to come after her, but Vincent wouldn't.

Felix said, "That's exactly why I'm even more afraid."

Daisy found this amusing and wanted to lighten the mood, so she said, "At our age, you still have things you're afraid of?"

But then she met Felix's utterly serious eyes.

She didn't look away. She only said, "Vincent does want to get back together with me, but I won't agree to it."

"Why not?" Felix asked gently.

Daisy knew the answer he wanted. When lovers reached this kind of moment, they were supposed to say things like 'because I've fallen in love with you.'

The words turned over on her tongue. The corners of her eyes crinkled with a smile. "Because now I love myself more."

Then she announced another piece of good news to Felix. "And I just told Luna about the divorce. Give me some time. I'll help Luna gradually accept that her mother has a new boyfriend and is starting a new life!"

Felix hadn't heard the words he wanted to hear. To say he wasn't disappointed would be a lie. But he also found himself genuinely happy because of Daisy's smile.

And happy because Daisy had chosen him.

He gently kissed Daisy's forehead.
