Chapter 139 What Kind of Bad Man Could Abandon a Woman Like Cordelia
"Cordelia, you should have breakfast first."
Allegra had already prepared breakfast for Cordelia and came over to help her to the dining room.
Perhaps because of the medicine, Cordelia's foot didn't hurt much. She wore a faint smile, "I'm fine, it doesn't hurt at all."
Hearing this, Allegra said softly, "You've lived a pampered life since childhood, how could it not hurt?"
It was only after Cordelia chose to become a doctor that she experienced any hardship.
Looking at Cordelia being so strong now, Allegra felt deeply sorry for her.
If Cordelia hadn't chosen Alaric back then, she would surely be cherished and treasured now.
What a pity.
Allegra let out a soft sigh.
Cordelia walked over and sat down at the dining table. Just as she was about to eat, her phone rang.
She glanced at the phone screen and saw it was a call from Thomas Thompson. A flash of surprise crossed her eyes.
Since returning home, Thomas rarely contacted her. This was the first time.
Thomas was a classmate she met while studying in Astoria.
When she gave birth to Amber, her due date came a week early. Although she had worked as an obstetrician before, it was her first time giving birth, so she was inevitably nervous.
Fortunately, Thomas helped her at that time.
Thomas and his boyfriend discovered Cordelia in pain and together sent her to the hospital.
Cordelia didn't even know how to thank Thomas at the time.
Thomas offered to be Amber's godfather.
So Amber had two godfathers from birth.
She picked up her phone and put it to her ear.
"Thomas?"
Hearing Cordelia's voice, Thomas joked in a cheerful tone, "Rare that you still remember me."
Hearing this, Cordelia raised her eyebrows slightly, a faint smile playing on her lips as she said softly, "I could forget anyone but wouldn't dare forget you."
Thomas chuckled, then said.
"Wouldn't dare forget me, but haven't contacted me since returning home. I'm so hurt."
Cordelia raised her eyebrows, "I was afraid of disturbing you and Ken."
Thomas was silent for a few seconds, then said.
"I'm back home."
Cordelia paused.
Previously, Thomas had said he would stay in Astoria and had already chosen to work at Astoria's Royal Hospital.
So many people wanted to get into Astoria's Royal Hospital but couldn't.
"Why did you suddenly come back?"
With such good conditions, Thomas shouldn't have returned home.
Besides, Ken was Astorian nobility, so Thomas wouldn't have to worry about being bullied at Royal Hospital without backing.
Thomas sighed softly and said quietly, "Ken and I have broken up."
His voice was calm, but Cordelia could hear a hint of tears in it.
Hearing this, Cordelia fell silent.
In her memory, Ken and Thomas had a great relationship. Ken didn't care about public opinion and would introduce Thomas as his boyfriend wherever they went.
And in Astoria, same-sex couples could marry.
Cordelia once thought they would make it to the end and get married.
She never expected them to break up.
"He got engaged to a beautiful woman who matches his status."
"Their wedding is set for the end of the year, so I came back home."
Cordelia's lips moved, not knowing what to say to comfort Thomas.
Before she could speak, Thomas said first, "You don't need to comfort me, I'm fine."
"I already knew this would be the result. A man with his status and position, how could he truly break free from his family's constraints to be with me."
"As long as the time I spent with him was happy, that's enough."
Cordelia responded softly.
"So what are your plans now that you're back?"
Thomas hesitated for a few seconds and said, "I'll probably stay in the country, but before that, I need you to do me a favor."
Cordelia raised her eyebrows.
"Go ahead."
Thomas laughed helplessly and said, "Somehow my parents found out about Ken and me, and they've been pressuring me to get married lately."
"You know my orientation. I can't hurt another girl, so I'd like you to pretend to be my girlfriend and meet my parents with me."
"Is that okay?"
Cordelia hesitated for a few seconds, then agreed.
"Okay."
Getting Cordelia's consent, Thomas smiled, "Alright then, I'll arrange things on my end and let you know the time. I'll come pick you up."
Cordelia agreed, "Any weekend works for me."
Thomas replied softly, "I'll definitely arrange it for a weekend."
"But have you remarried Amber's father?"
Cordelia answered flatly, "No."
Thomas: "That's good. I was worried that if you'd remarried him, asking you to pretend to be my girlfriend might cause unnecessary misunderstandings."
Cordelia smiled calmly, "There won't be any misunderstandings."
"He doesn't even think Amber is his child."
When Cordelia said this, she hid the disappointment in her tone, her voice very soft.
Thomas paused for a few seconds, then sneered, "What a jerk. If I ever get the chance to meet him, I'll definitely tell him off for you."
Hearing this, Cordelia pressed her lips together and smiled, "Okay."
When Cordelia was in Astoria, she rarely talked to others about her marital status.
So Thomas didn't know who her ex-husband was.
Thomas was initially curious about what kind of man could abandon a woman like Cordelia and their unborn child.
But after asking several times with Cordelia remaining tight-lipped, Thomas gradually lost interest and stopped asking.
Thomas hadn't heard Amber's voice in a long time and wanted to chat with her, so Cordelia handed the phone to Amber.
"Your godfather."
Amber happily took the phone, put it to her ear, her voice cheerful and pleased.
"Godfather."
Her voice was very sweet.
"It's me."
Hearing her voice, Thomas's voice softened.
Amber was good at chatting and talked with Thomas for quite a while holding the phone.
Cordelia quietly ate her breakfast, watching Amber with a smile.
In the end, the time to meet Thomas's family was set for Saturday.
Early Saturday morning, Thomas came to The Stone Manor following the location to pick up Cordelia, bringing Amber's favorite toys along.
While Cordelia changed upstairs, he played with Amber in the downstairs living room for a while.
After Cordelia finished getting ready and came downstairs, seeing Amber and Thomas getting along so well, a helpless smile flashed in her eyes.
Amber seemed to get along well with everyone.
Cordelia was wearing a very proper dress today, simple in style and plain white in color.
Her hair was naturally pinned up at the back, giving her a dignified appearance—the type that older people would like at first sight.
Thomas was very satisfied with what he saw.
With Cordelia's help, his parents probably wouldn't push him to go on blind dates for a while.
