Chapter 167 Alaric Is Really Terrifying
Seeing Cordelia calm Ruth down with just a few words, Clifford and Saskia both felt relieved.
Ruth had been too emotionally worked up earlier and was now trembling slightly.
Cordelia could clearly see the exhaustion in her eyes.
"Mrs. Hughes, shall we take your medicine and rest for a bit?"
Her tone was gentle. Ruth nodded, and Clifford quickly brought over Ruth's medication.
After Cordelia helped Ruth take her medicine, she assisted her to the bed to rest.
She sat by Ruth's bedside, waiting until Ruth fell asleep before getting up.
"Take good care of Mrs. Hughes. If there are any problems, just come find me."
Clifford nodded. He had been out picking up Saskia earlier, so he didn't know what had happened.
But clearly, this had something to do with Marigold. It seemed that from now on, when Marigold came to visit Ruth, they'd need to be more careful and not let her talk nonsense in front of Ruth.
As Cordelia left Ruth's room and headed back to her office floor, she spotted Alaric in the smoking room.
As she passed by, he had just exhaled a puff of smoke. Cordelia caught a glimpse of his troubled expression.
She rarely saw Alaric looking so distressed.
Alaric sensed Cordelia's gaze and looked up, but Cordelia had already looked away and walked past the smoking room.
Watching her retreating figure, Alaric's eyes darkened slightly. His gaze stayed fixed on the doorway of the smoking room for a long time, lost in thought, not raising his cigarette for quite a while.
The lit cigarette quickly accumulated a long ash.
When he snapped back to reality, the cigarette had already burned halfway down. He frowned and coldly stubbed it out, then got up to leave.
When he returned to Ruth's room, Ruth was already asleep.
Saskia sat nearby attending to her.
Clifford was organizing the daily necessities Ruth would need for the next few days.
"What did she say to my grandmother?"
Alaric looked at Ruth's peaceful sleeping face, as if she hadn't been upset at all just moments ago.
"Ms. Stone just told Mrs. Hughes it was a misunderstanding and asked Mrs. Hughes to trust her. Then Mrs. Hughes calmed down."
Alaric frowned, a flash of coldness passing through his eyes.
Cordelia clearly held a higher place in Ruth's heart than he did.
With just one sentence, she had soothed Ruth's emotions.
Alaric thought of the resentful look Ruth had given him earlier and couldn't help rubbing his temples.
Ruth had always been very fond of Cordelia.
Now that she knew Cordelia was dating Thomas, she definitely couldn't accept it.
Cordelia and Thomas even had a child together - how could it possibly be just a misunderstanding?
Cordelia had probably lied to Ruth just to calm her down.
"From now on, when people from the Thompson family come, don't let them near my grandmother."
After coldly saying this, Alaric turned and left.
When Cordelia returned to her office, she found that the medicine she had previously prescribed for Alaric was finished.
He needed to start the second course of treatment.
After writing the new prescription, she had a nurse deliver the medicine to Ruth's room for Alaric.
During this time, Alaric hadn't returned to his own hospital room at all, and his condition seemed pretty good, so he didn't need to continue with IV drips.
Cordelia didn't worry about it.
The nurse took the medicine upstairs as Cordelia instructed. Just as she stepped out of the elevator, she ran into Alaric walking from the far end of the corridor.
Alaric's handsome face was exceptionally cold, his whole body radiating an unapproachable sharpness.
The nurse gathered all her courage to walk up to Alaric and politely handed over the medicine.
"Mr. Hughes, this is the medicine Dr. Stone prescribed for you. This is for the second course of treatment."
Alaric's deep, cold eyes fell on the medicine in her hand, but he didn't reach out to take it.
The nurse looked confused and cautiously raised her head to look at Alaric. "Mr. Hughes."
She spoke softly, but Alaric simply walked right past her.
The nurse froze, standing there bewildered, watching Alaric enter the elevator. Even after the elevator doors closed, she didn't dare look up at his dark, gloomy face.
In the end, the nurse could only return the medicine to Cordelia.
"Mr. Hughes is so scary."
"He didn't say a word, just walked away. I don't even know what I did wrong."
Cordelia looked at the medicine the nurse had returned and rubbed her temples.
It seemed there would be no one to help her deliver medicine to Alaric anymore.
She sighed softly and could only temporarily keep the medicine in her office, planning to give it to him personally tomorrow when Alaric came to the hospital to visit Ruth.
But over the next three days, Cordelia didn't even catch a glimpse of Alaric.
Every time she arrived at Ruth's room, Alaric had just left.
It was as if he was deliberately avoiding her. She could only give the medicine to Clifford to pass on to Alaric.
However, when Clifford received the medicine, he looked like he'd been handed a hot potato and quickly shoved it back into Cordelia's hands.
"Ms. Stone, Mr. Hughes has been in a bad mood lately. None of us want to anger him at this time. Why don't you give the medicine to Mr. Hughes yourself?"
"You're his attending physician. Your words carry weight."
Cordelia frowned.
Clifford continued.
"Besides, if I give it to Mr. Hughes, he'll probably just throw it away. Our words don't matter to him."
Perhaps Alaric's state had been particularly intimidating lately - even mentioning him made Clifford look uncomfortable.
Cordelia could only take the medicine back and said quietly.
"Then I'll deliver it to him myself."
Cordelia returned to Ruth's room and chatted with Ruth for a while before getting off work.
After work, instead of going straight back to The Stone Manor, she drove to Crown Hill Estates.
When she got downstairs, she called Alaric, but he never picked up.
Just as she was about to hang up, Robert's voice came through the phone.
"Ms. Stone."
Cordelia paused, suppressing the slight unease in her heart. "I'm here to deliver medicine to Alaric. I'm downstairs at Crown Hill Estates now. Is he here?"
Robert quickly answered.
"Yes, Mr. Hughes is at Crown Hill Estates."
Cordelia immediately said, "Then come downstairs. I'll give you the medicine."
Robert's voice sounded troubled. "I can't come down right now. Mr. Hughes is drunk and still lying on the floor."
Cordelia frowned. She had just gotten off work, and Alaric was already completely drunk.
His body had only just started to recover a little, and now he was drinking so heavily again. All her previous efforts had been wasted.
She took a deep breath, her tone carrying some anger.
"Don't tell me he's been drunk since noon?"
Robert didn't answer Cordelia's question directly, only saying softly.
"I'm really sorry, Ms. Stone. I'm afraid I'll have to trouble you to bring the medicine up."
