Chapter 114 This Medicine Is Ineffective, Why Is He in More Pain?
The next day, 10 AM.
Alaric arrived at the department right on time.
Cordelia had just finished a minor surgery. When she returned to the office, she saw Alaric sitting there with a cold expression.
He looked like he hadn't slept well last night—there were faint dark circles around his eyes.
After Cordelia wrote up his examination orders, she went with him to the examination room.
During the exam, Cordelia got close to Alaric, and the light, fresh scent from her body drifted into his nose.
Even though the examination was uncomfortable, his heart felt somehow comforted. He reached out and grabbed the corner of Cordelia's clothes. Cordelia didn't pull his hand away. She looked at the monitor screen, her brow slightly furrowed.
"For the next six months, you'd better cut down on social events and don't drink."
Her voice was serious as she carefully and thoroughly examined Alaric.
After the exam was done, Alaric's hand still gripped Cordelia's clothes tightly.
Cordelia looked down at his hand and pressed her lips together. "Okay, we're done."
Only then did Alaric let go.
He looked at Cordelia with warm eyes, his Adam's apple bobbing slightly.
But soon he pulled himself together and left the examination room.
After Cordelia got the test results, she headed back upstairs to her office.
Alaric was already lying in the hospital bed, having a nurse set up his IV.
When Cordelia went to check on him in his room, she found it already crowded with people—mostly senior executives from the Hughes Group and people who had business with Alaric.
Evelyn also heard the news about Alaric being hospitalized. As she was about to leave, Amber jumped down from the sofa.
From the conversation between Donald and Evelyn earlier, Amber knew that Evelyn was going to where Cordelia worked. So she ran in front of Evelyn, blocked her way, and immediately raised her arms asking to be picked up.
"Aunt Evelyn, pick me up."
Evelyn raised an eyebrow and picked her up, not quite understanding what Amber meant at first.
"Amber, just a quick hug. I need to go out, but I'll come back tonight to keep you company, okay?"
Amber shook her head and hugged Evelyn's neck tightly.
"I want to go with Aunt Evelyn."
Evelyn raised an eyebrow and looked at Donald.
Seeing this, Donald didn't stop them. He just said calmly, "Go ahead."
"After all, he's in the hospital. Amber should go see him too."
Amber had grown up, and Alaric was single now, so Donald didn't want to hide this from Alaric.
If there was a chance for Cordelia and Alaric to remarry and give Amber a complete family, that would be the best outcome.
With Donald's permission, Evelyn carried Amber out.
Allegra went with them too.
After all, Evelyn didn't have much experience taking care of kids, so having Allegra along made things easier.
Bruce's car was parked right outside The Stone Manor. When he saw Evelyn carrying Amber out, he suddenly regretted driving himself today.
If he had let the driver bring the car, he'd have a chance to hold Amber now.
Bruce reached out and rubbed Amber's head, then started the car and headed to Sunrise Valley Hospital.
At the hospital, in Alaric's room.
After he found an excuse to send away the people who came to visit him, the room fell quiet.
But within a few minutes, Bruce's teasing voice came from outside the door.
"How did you end up in the hospital?"
Alaric lifted his eyelids and glanced at Bruce as he walked in. Seeing Bruce looking so energetic and cheerful, Alaric couldn't help but remember how Bruce had blocked him from seeing his Feed posts.
His eyes darkened slightly, and he gave Bruce a cold look.
"What are you doing here?"
Bruce knew Alaric was still mad and smiled. "To see you, of course."
As soon as he finished speaking, Evelyn walked into the room carrying Amber.
Amber's round eyes stared curiously at Alaric lying in the bed.
Alaric was very handsome, and Amber had always liked good-looking guys, so now that she saw Alaric, she couldn't look away.
Alaric also looked at Amber. Seeing her face that was ninety percent similar to Cordelia's, his heart jolted hard.
For some reason, an unfamiliar emotion welled up deep inside him.
He didn't dislike Amber.
Evelyn noticed Alaric's reaction and smiled slightly.
"Mr. Hughes, you need to cooperate with Cordelia and get proper treatment. In half a month, it'll be Luminary Ventures Group's fourth anniversary. We need you at this year's celebration."
Luminary Ventures Group's business was doing very well now. The money they each got every year was pretty good, so both Evelyn and Alaric were optimistic about the company's future.
"Don't worry, it's nothing serious." Alaric answered Evelyn with a straight face.
He also looked away from Amber.
Hearing this, Evelyn didn't say more. She sat down in a nearby chair with Amber.
Bruce and Alaric started talking about other things, with Evelyn occasionally chiming in.
Amber had already climbed down from Evelyn's arms.
She walked to Alaric's bedside. The hand Alaric was getting his IV in was hanging over the edge of the bed.
Amber walked over and started blowing on Alaric's hand.
Alaric was talking with Bruce about the Howard Group's current difficulties when he suddenly felt his hand with the IV get cool. He froze for a moment, then turned to look at Amber, who was leaning against his bed blowing on the back of his hand.
His expression stiffened. For a moment he didn't know how to react and just stared at her blankly.
Amber looked up, and her big round eyes met Alaric's deep gaze.
She tilted her head and looked at Alaric with an innocent expression.
"Does it still hurt?"
When she used to fall down, Allegra would tell her that blowing on it would make it stop hurting. So when Amber saw the needle in the back of Alaric's hand, she wanted to blow on it for him.
Alaric's voice was a bit hoarse as he shook his head slightly.
"It doesn't hurt anymore."
Although he felt a strange discomfort inside, he still didn't pull his hand back and left it where it was.
Amber gently touched the back of Alaric's hand, feeling like Alaric was lying.
When she got her shots, it really hurt.
She blew on it for him again.
Cordelia walked in just in time to see this scene.
Seeing Amber so seriously blowing on Alaric's hand, she paused for a moment, then walked into the room.
"Amber, don't touch that."
She paused, then continued, "Don't touch Mr. Hughes's needle. It'll hurt him and make him bleed."
Hearing Cordelia's voice, Amber immediately abandoned Alaric and ran toward Cordelia.
She hugged Cordelia's legs tightly, her voice full of joy. "Mommy."
"Mommy, pick me up."
Cordelia's work clothes had been in contact with many patients. Even though she'd disinfected them with alcohol, she still didn't pick Amber up.
After all, Amber was young and had a weaker immune system.
Evelyn understood what Cordelia meant and picked Amber up.
"Your mommy is too tired from work. She doesn't have the energy to hold Amber right now. Is it okay if I hold you?"
Hearing the words "too tired," Amber really didn't make a fuss and just looked at Cordelia obediently.
Alaric lay quietly in the hospital bed watching this scene, his heart aching.
He frowned, thinking the medicine must not be working—otherwise, why did it seem like the pain was getting worse?
