Chapter 94 A tricky question
Chapter 94 – A tricky question
When Roger left earlier, Oriana stared the way they went and something didn’t sit well with her. “Don’t you worry about their relationship?”
Karen shook her head. She had passed that level of doubt with her husband. “Roger is my husband. Let’s go inside.”
At the office, Oriana could not leave the matter to rest, pointing out, “he loves her.”
Karen did not refuse but her answer was far from what Oriana expected. “Like a sister. She was in his life before I came into it. She was there when he underwent disguise because of Tonia. I don’t care how Delanie feels but I know Roger would only see and treat her as a sister.”
Stunned, Oriana had the understanding that Karen’s trust was in Roger and not Delanie, she smiled and went to her assigned branched.
Karen was engrossed in work when the intercom rang. “Ma’am, it’s Katherine Fletcher. She said she’s your mom.”
Karen’s teeth gritted together but since Katherine was already there, she sighed and answered, “let her in.”
Katherine walked and closed the door, still carrying a melancholic look. When she realized that Karen’s attention wasn’t on her to the extent of not even offering her a seat, she went straight to the point. “Karen, there’s something you need to know.”
She was already in the office so Karen thought it wise to listen and let her go. “Out with it.”
“Karen, bareness runs in our blood. I was thinking about it when you came back saying you weren’t pregnant and till now, you aren’t. I think you should have it checked.”
Karen froze. Her marriage was barely a month old and yet this woman wanted to plant things in her head. No, she wasn’t going to allow it. “I’m not barren, Katherine.”
“I never said you are,” Katherine corrected before explaining to her. “My great grandparents never had a child until five years into their marriage before having one.”
For some reason, Katherine’s words stole her attention this time.
“It was the same with my grandparents and parents. Then it happened to me and that’s why I adopted Tonia. That’s why I thought she was my lucky charm but turns out it was never the case. We only have it in our genes and five years is usually the mark.”
Karen was saddened but had no intention of telling Roger about it now. Five years was a long time, and she was newly married, so why worry her head.
What she didn’t expect was Roger asking about what she discussed with Katherine as soon as they were in the comfort of their bedroom, and that made her slightly uneasy.
“Nothing. It’s the same old story. Asking me to forgive her.” She stood up to go and shower, but Roger pulled her by the hand. She swirled and fell right onto his lap.
Her head pressed against his hard chest, and her breathing grew erratic. For some reason, Roger did not believe her, asking, “Are you sure?”
Karen swallowed tightly. It was hard to lie to a man who trusted her so much, but with Delanie and Roger’s case not closed, she feared telling him about something so important. “You don’t believe me?”
Roger pursed his lips, feeling slightly guilty for suspecting her, but he wanted to know everything about her day, just as he told her about his.
Besides, he needed to make supper for her but was eager to know the reason for the visit. “I thought it would be about Tonia. The body in the coffin wasn’t hers,” he revealed. Karen feared a little.
If Tonia was alive, then she’d be planning a lot of evil she wasn’t going to prepare for. “So, what do we do now?”
“We’ll continue the search for her,” Roger replied briefly before kissing her passionately on the lips. “I love you, Kitten,” he said after breaking from the kiss.
Karen smiled but was pierced with guilt for keeping such a secret. A slap on the ass awoke her from her trance as Roger smiled at her. “But I’ll cook for all of us.”
“I’ll help,” she said seriously. Roger was thrilled. This was the first time she offered to help in the kitchen. Though he didn’t need it, he knew he’d enjoy the company.
However, Karen paused and asked, “But Roger, can I ask you a question?”
“Sure,” he agreed, putting on casual clothes. “Do you love kids?”
“I adore them, and one day, this house will be filled with their laughter. We can have a dozen of them,” he shrugged, thrilled about the subject. But Karen swallowed tightly, letting out a sad smile.
“What if you found out in the future that I can’t give you kids and this house would never be filled with their laughter? Will you adopt, live with it, or divorce me and marry Delanie?”
