Chapter 356 Second-Hand Store
Chapter 356 Second-Hand Store
For Anthony, the so-called free life held far less appeal than knowing who was sending these emails.
He had a hunch that the person sending emails, the one who had helped him before, and the one who brought Rachel to his side were all the same person.
This person must have some old connection with his mother, which was why they were helping him and his sister so much. But why wouldn't they show themselves? Were they worried about attracting Alexander's attention and facing retaliation?
But this person had even captured Philip, who was Arabella's close friend, and was even planning to capture Becky... Becky should be important to both Arabella and Alexander, right?
Doing these things right under Alexander's nose - wouldn't the consequences be even more serious if discovered?
Besides, given his mother's personality and the way she dealt with people, what kind of person would help them so fearlessly despite the danger?
Anthony considered himself pretty good at reading people, but he had absolutely no clue about this person he'd never met.
Just as he hung up the phone, Rachel came in. Unlike before when she was back home and always dressed up beautifully, during this time stuck in the manor, Rachel had long given up on managing her appearance.
Right now she was wearing old loungewear, her hair casually tied up, face bare without any makeup.
She'd even gained some weight, looking much rounder.
She said somewhat bored, "Anthony, it's so boring staying here. Can't we go out for a bit? I want to go shopping and buy new clothes."
Anthony glanced at her, his expression stern. "Alexander's people still haven't given up on catching us. At least wait until things die down outside before we can go out, otherwise it's suicide. Got it?"
Rachel didn't get it, and didn't want to. All she knew was she was going crazy staying here.
"How about I go out today with the maid who's buying groceries? I'll dress really low-key, definitely won't let anyone recognize me. Look, I'm like two completely different people with and without makeup."
She felt like she'd go moldy if she stayed cooped up any longer.
Anthony firmly refused. "No way. That's asking for death."
Rachel's shoulders slumped. She sighed disappointedly and turned to leave.
Back in her room, she examined herself in the mirror. The more she looked, the more she felt she was completely different from before. Even if she stood right in front of Alexander, he might not recognize her.
She really didn't know what her brother was worrying about.
What if she just snuck out for a quick trip?
Her brother was always shut up in his study anyway, who knows what he was researching. As long as she got back in time, he definitely wouldn't notice.
The more Rachel thought about it, the more impulsive she became. She quickly made up her mind.
She dressed up carefully in front of the mirror. She messed up her hair a bit, applied heavy foundation, put on thick makeup, then wore a denim outfit.
How could anyone see any trace of her former self?
Rachel felt confident. When the servants went out to buy groceries, she secretly slipped out too.
Coming out of the manor, even the air felt sweet. Rachel walked casually down the street, bought an ice cream cone, then got a hot dog from a street vendor and ate it carelessly.
It wasn't really that good, but because she was outside, she still found it delicious.
She stopped outside a thrift shop, looking inside for a few moments. She wouldn't go in and interact with these people, and besides, she found secondhand stuff pretty disgusting.
The only reason she stopped to look was because it was crowded and lively inside, and that's exactly what she was missing right now.
Just then, a girl who had just paid and was carrying several bags walked out and bumped right into Rachel.
Rachel had been spacing out and stumbled back several steps from the collision, almost falling.
She immediately said unhappily, "Are you blind? Can't you see someone's standing here and you still bump into them? Are you blind or what!"
The girl who bumped into her wasn't backing down either. She said irritably, "Good dogs don't block the road. You're standing right in the doorway not moving, and you blame others for bumping into you? Aren't you asking to be bumped into?"
Rachel regretted it right after cursing. She figured this area was full of foreigners, so even if she argued she couldn't win. Besides, she needed to keep a low profile right now.
So she was originally planning to let it go.
But unexpectedly, the other person spoke English, and with such an impolite attitude. Not only did she not apologize for bumping into someone, she even cursed at her.
Rachel's temper flared up immediately. She stepped forward aggressively, "People like you, even if you go abroad, what difference does it make? You can still only afford a bunch of secondhand crap, you low-class loser!"
Nora's nose was practically crooked with anger.
Ever since she'd been tricked into signing that terrible contract, her original life plans had been completely disrupted. She couldn't afford the tens of millions in penalties. She'd been so desperate she was planning suicide, but at that critical moment she met her savior Blake.
She only found out later through research that Blake was currently one of the top lawyers in criminal and economic law in the country. The law firm he founded was practically unbeatable domestically. In other words, if Blake couldn't handle her case, no one could save her.
So when Blake offered to help with her lawsuit, she was very cooperative and provided everything she could.
But because she'd provided pretty complete information when signing the contract, Star Creation wouldn't let her go even though she wanted to run. She was cornered with nowhere to go in the country. Blake said they couldn't file the lawsuit yet and still needed to gather evidence. With no other choice, she temporarily went abroad to lay low.
She didn't have much money. Rent and daily expenses took up most of it. A girl in her twenties at the most beauty-conscious and vain age - so when Nora discovered this thrift shop near her rental apartment, she couldn't wait to go on a shopping spree.
She found lots of designer clothes, shoes and bags inside, all sold very cheap. The most expensive was only a few dozen dollars. Though they were all outdated styles, Nora was still excited, so she impulsively bought three big bags of stuff.
These things cost her over eight hundred dollars, leaving her with very little living expenses.
She was already annoyed at herself for impulse shopping, and then she bumped into this rude woman who actually pointed out her sore spot.
Nora said bluntly, "So what if I buy secondhand stuff? Better than some people who ARE secondhand goods! Look at yourself - you probably snuck over here illegally!"
Rachel looked at her disdainfully. "Only people who buy secondhand stuff need to operate like that. Poor loser!"
She turned to leave after cursing, not wanting to get tangled up with Nora. Calculating the time, she needed to hurry back.
But unexpectedly, Nora grabbed her and kept at it. "Who are you calling a poor loser? Say that again! Look at how you're dressed - how rich can you be?"
Rachel impatiently shoved her. "Get off me! Don't touch me! Your poor smell is rubbing off on me!"
Out of disgust and irritation, she used all her strength. Nora wasn't prepared and was pushed to the ground by Rachel. Unluckily, Nora's head hit the steps nearby.
Rachel watched as Nora passed out and blood kept flowing from the back of her head. She screamed in fright and stepped back.
