Chapter 227
Chapter 227
Seeing the eerie, relieved smile on Silver Sentinel's face, Charles was stunned. This guy was tougher than he thought. What kind of secret was so important that he'd rather die than spill the beans?
Staring at the lifeless body sprawled out like a ragdoll, Charles felt a heavy weight settle in his chest.
He realized this whole thing was way more complicated than he'd imagined, like an invisible web trapping them all.
During the pre-mission investigation, Charles had learned that Silver Sentinel was terrified of dying.
But if this secret was enough to make a cowardly man choose to end his own life, then it must be tied to something huge!
The moonlight, silver and cold, bathed Silver Sentinel's corpse. Charles crouched beside it, as still and cold as a statue, blending into the night.
After a long while, he slowly stood up and called the driver hiding in the bushes. Together, they drove back to the explosion site, tossed the body into the flames, and quietly left the ominous place.
On the way back to the city, the car swayed slightly due to the driver's trembling hands on the wheel.
"Why are your hands shaking? You're driving all over the place. Didn't I tell you before? Help me, and you'll live. Don't think about anything else. Wake up tomorrow and take the cops to the explosion site." Charles's voice was calm and cold, carrying an undeniable authority.
"But don't think... I'm letting you go. If I find out you spill anything about tonight..." Charles drew his thumb across his throat, "You know what will happen, right?"
The driver nodded frantically, his face as pale as a sheet, repeatedly promising he wouldn't say a word.
Sitting in the passenger seat, Charles's face was calm, but inside, his mind was a storm of thoughts.
He didn't let the driver take him into the city. Instead, he had him stop at an abandoned junkyard a few miles out, then disappeared into the night.
Taking Silver Sentinel's car back to Emerald City would be walking into a trap. Charles knew the car had a tracking system.
As for how the driver would cover up what happened tonight, Charles wasn't worried.
The fact that the Shadow Syndicate had found him meant they already knew where he lived and some basic information. Killing their leader was Charles's warning to them. If they broke the rules again, he wouldn't show mercy.
Back at his place, Charles meticulously checked his home's security before pulling the curtains tight and collapsing into bed, falling into a deep sleep.
The next morning, he opened his computer to find a message from Opossum Outlaw.
The phone that had been sent away had a contact named Iron Tyrant. Before Charles reached the "hunting" ground, a distress message had been sent to Iron Tyrant. However, Iron Tyrant never replied. Despite extensive searches, no useful information could be found about this number or the alias, as if Iron Tyrant didn't exist.
Reading Opossum Outlaw's message, Charles had a feeling this would happen. Anything related to the Mistveil Realm was never easy to trace.
Iron Tyrant, the Veiled Society... these fragments of information began to connect in his mind, and a sense of foreboding slowly emerged.
He didn't ask Opossum Outlaw to investigate further. Instead, he briefed Horned Guardian on last night's mission, then used the computer Fiona had given him to access the Mistveil Realm website. He booked a cab and returned to Tower House before nightfall.
There was some time before his next mission, but he wanted to take on a few more jobs to see if he could find any Eerie Artifacts.
As soon as he pushed open the door to Tower House, he saw Fiona and Howard in a heated discussion in the lobby.
They paused and looked at him, their expressions turning complex.
Sensing the tension, Charles scratched his head and said with a self-deprecating smile, "Sorry to interrupt. I'll just head to my room."
Fiona quickly stood up and called out, "Wait. We just got a big job, passed on by someone else. The client's fourth room task has a puzzle piece. We want to take this mission and see if we can get that piece. Are you interested in joining us?"
Though Charles was still relatively new, Fiona believed that his exceptional composure and psychological resilience would not only prevent him from being a liability but could also expedite their search for clues. Such a proactive team member would be a significant asset.
Charles frowned slightly, puzzled. "You can know what's in the room ahead of time?"
Fiona nodded. "Yes, starting from the fourth mission, all hints are revealed in advance. Tasks with puzzle pieces have special markers below the hints."
"Of course, if you don't want to join, we won't force you." Her words were gentle but carried an undeniable force, hinting at a subtle threat.
Charles thought for a moment, then met Fiona's gaze. "Can I see the hints and information for this mission first?"
Fiona nodded and handed him a photo. The blood-red hints jumped out at Charles.
"This photo has passed Mistveil Realm's strict review. There won't be any mistakes," Fiona said softly.
Charles stared at the photo, feeling a surge of inexplicable excitement. He knew that behind this room lay not just a puzzle piece, but possibly clues to his ongoing investigation. "I have a few questions."
