The Tipping Point
The walls surrounding Magnus throbbed with a sinister, regular throb, and his chest heaved as the rift's hold tightened. With every heartbeat, the artifact in his grasp grew brighter, its glow flickering as though it were having difficulty keeping up with the force of the rift's expansion. The darkness was trying to take hold and overtake him, and he could feel it seeping into his thoughts.
"No," Magnus whispered to himself in a strained, harsh voice. He had lost too much and struggled too long to allow this get to him just now.
Around him, the air appeared to warp, rippling like desert heat waves. His vision was filled with shadows that swirled toward him like a hurricane that was about to eat him alive. Magnus gripped the relic more tightly. Through was the only way out.
Then there was the thunderous crash of something heavy hitting the earth, followed by a high-pitched scream that reverberated across the abyss. A huge, towering figure emerged from the darkness, its form barely discernible in the gloom, and Magnus spun around, his heart thumping. With every stride it made toward him, the ground trembled.
The voice vibrated in his chest as the figure snarled, "You should have kept away."
Magnus was struck with recognition, and his breath seized in his throat. It was a familiar figure. It was an enforcer assigned to destroy any threat, a representation of the rift's power.
Everything else vanished as the creature sprang forward with terrible speed, its claws aimed directly at Magnus's heart. At that point, survival was the only thing that mattered.
Magnus dodged in time, allowing the creature's claws to brush across his shoulder as it flew by. He stumbled back, looking around for anything that could be useful. However, the energy of the rift had already engulfed the surroundings, and everything appeared to shimmer and warp about him.
The creature's eyes gleamed at him like a predator, and its snarl filled the air once more. Magnus did not wait for it to initiate contact. He jerked the item up above his head and let out a volley of energy. It struck the creature with such force that it slammed backward, its huge body skidding across the ground.
The beast remained motionless for a minute, but Magnus knew that it was far from finished. All he had done was stun it. The will of the rift was much more powerful than anything he could control on his own. He needed to move quickly.
Around him, the energy of the rift crackled wildly, and he had the terrible realization that this might never end if he did not stop it now.
With the rift threatening to devour him, Magnus turned to face the gathering tempest of shadows, his thoughts racing.
The creature ascended again before he could react, its shape changing and twisting, and then it disappeared in a flash of dark energy, reappearing close behind him with a sound of power snap.
Magnus was almost knocked off his feet by the ferocity of the creature's blow, but he managed to turn around just in time to parry the following hit. As the creature's bright eyes stared at him, he stumbled and gritted his teeth against the agony. Its goal was to break him and force him to submit to the power of the rift, not merely kill him.
The creature growled, its voice a mix of sarcasm and laughter, "You cannot win, Magnus." "You will be devoured here. You will never get away.
Magnus's mind was frantically trying to find a solution as he battled to keep his footing, his pulse roaring in his ears. He needed to prevent the rift from growing and destroying everything.
The energy of the gap whirled about him, intensifying and becoming more chaotic. It seemed to gain control with every second that went by. Magnus's body felt heavy, and the distortion of the rift's power caused his eyesight to swim. One notion, though, broke through the confusion: he was near. So near.
He had no money to give up.
Magnus let out a shout and used his every remaining effort to bring the artifact down, releasing a dazzling beam of light that pierced the night. But as the light reached its objective, a new, even darker power arose from the shadows, and something deep within the rift roared Earth-shatteringly.
For a brief moment, Magnus felt as though the planet was holding its breath as the roar echoed through the surface of the earth beneath his feet. The beast in front of him writhed in pain as the artifact's light struck it, but then it seemed to realize something and laughed icily.
Magnus felt his heart beat faster.
"No," he muttered, shaking his head incredulously.
Still writhing, the creature abruptly broke in two, its body breaking with a sound like ripping cloth. Something else, a bigger, darker form of the creature, sprang out of the two pieces. Its shape appeared to bend reality itself as it twisted and shimmered in the air.
Magnus was horrified to learn that the rift had changed. It had only gotten stronger after his strike.
Magnus realized he was running out of time as the new thing towered over him, its bright eyes penetrating his soul. The force of the rift was a live, breathing nightmare that sought to devour everything, not simply a danger.
With the relic still burning brightly in his fingers, Magnus refused to back down. Though he did not have time for uncertainty, his mind was racing. Hesitancy was not an option. He had to make the most of this opportunity if it was his last.
Once more, the creature's body contorted, its eyes narrowing in anticipation of a blow. In desperation, however, Magnus lifted the relic higher, exerting all of his remaining might on it.
With its dark energy coiling and tightening like a noose around him, the fissure appeared to pulse with one more warning. Magnus, however, did not recoil.
"This is it," he whispered to himself.
He gave the item one last shove, causing a strong surge of energy to be released. Everything in its path was consumed as the light burst brilliantly from him. He was chilled by the sound of the rift's wail.
However, Magnus had a sudden, intense agony in his chest as the light peaked.
The rift's power had already penetrated him, and when he peered down in fear, he saw dark tendrils around him. Had he succeeded, or had he simply sealed his doom?
