The Last Account
Magnus sensed the energy of the rift moving through him like a live, throbbing creature that was ready to tear him to pieces. His limbs trembled under the weight of the black power, and he breathed in ragged breaths. Against the overpowering shadow, the relic he was holding hummed with desperate brightness. This has to stop. Right now.
The gigantic figure of the beast that had risen from the gap shifted and twisted in front of him, seemingly composed of liquid darkness. With a spooky, unearthly light, its eyes peered into him, seeking any signs of weakness. He was not going to allow the rift's will to carry him away, even though it had already started to seep into his flesh and wrap its tendrils around his head.
With a harsh, rasping snarl that echoed across the atmosphere, the beast growled, "You think you can stop this?" "The rift is nothing in comparison to you. Like the others, you will be eaten.
Sweat trickled down Magnus's brow as he clinched his teeth. He could not allow it to prevail. He was unable to give it everything.
The thing sprang at him with a guttural roar, its claws aimed at his chest, and Magnus barely avoided it, his heart pounding. The world around him started to distort as the energy of the rift surged.
Magnus staggered back, narrowly avoiding the creature's assault as the ground shook beneath his feet. The fissure itself appeared to bend around them, a twisting, ever-expanding darkness consuming the light. The rift was calling to him in whispers, urging him to give in and succumb.
Magnus, however, was not prepared to tumble.
"Not today," he said in a whisper while hoisting the relic. It shot out a beam of light so strong that it split the darkness in two. The thing screamed, its shape shifting and changing as the light struck it, yet it remained upright. It did not flinch at all.
Instead, it screamed again, louder than before, and a black, nauseating energy pulsed through its body. Magnus could feel the strain growing as the fissure tightened its hold on his thoughts and pushed harder against him.
With a low growl, the beast snarled, "You cannot destroy me." "You are already lost."
Magnus barely raised his hand in defense as the thing charged forward once more, faster this time. He was hurled backwards by the shockwave from its impact, colliding with the rocky rift's walls. He lost his hold on the relic.
Magnus felt pain as his body slammed onto the uneven terrain. The weight of the rift pressed down on him like a thick, oppressive blanket, blurring his eyesight as he strained to stand. With eyes that gleamed with predatory hunger, the thing was now circling him.
With a tone that was almost mischievous, it chided, "You cannot win." "In the grandeur of the rift, you are but a glimmer of light. You will disappear into thin air.
Magnus strained to regain his balance, and his chest heaved. He was barely able to reach the relic, and the rift's hold was getting stronger by the moment, threatening to rip him apart from the inside out. One thing remained, though: his determination.
He refused to compromise. Not quite yet.
Magnus made one last desperate grab for the item. The thing staggered backward as a shockwave of light burst from it the instant his fingers touched its surface. Magnus's gaze fell upon the creature's shape, and he realized instantly what needed to be done.
He summoned the entire power of the item and raised it with his last remaining might. The beast howled in rage as the rift screamed, but Magnus was already too preoccupied. His head was filled with a single thought: This is it.
The beast was engulfed in a ray of light from the artifact, which was brighter than ever. Magnus held on despite feeling the rift's strength and the crushing weight of its will. The creature's form started to break as he concentrated and threw all of his strength into the light.
It was disintegrating.
But as it did, Magnus could hear the rift's deep, ominous voice echoing in his head.
It said in a somber and foreboding tone, "You have no idea what you have done." "You believe you have triumphed, but this is just the start."
Magnus's heart was pounding. Now, he could not afford to lose concentration. However, the rift was not yet complete. There was yet more to uncover.
The creature's corpse broke up into black mist, but as the mist whirled about Magnus, a man with red eyes and a shrouded body sprang out of the shadows. The figure moved forward, strength emanating from it.
Darkness covered the tall figure that rose from the mist. It was too strong for Magnus to handle, and its presence was overwhelming. The rift's energy still enveloped him, and even though the item in his fingers pulsed with light, it seemed feeble.
The figure's voice was icy and authoritative as it declared, "You should not have come here." "The beast was never the real threat, even though you believe you have destroyed it."
With his heart thumping in his chest, Magnus stepped back. There was still a rift. He still had the real enemy in front of him.
"Who are you?" Magnus' voice was harsh as he demanded. He could feel the rift's force bearing down on him from every direction, yet he could not afford to give up just yet. He had to put a stop to this, permanently.
Magnus felt the hair on the back of his neck stand up as the figure grinned, a knowing, ruthless smile.
The ground beneath Magnus's boots burst open with a flick of the wrist as the figure declared, "I am the actual power of the rift." Magnus was plunging into the abyss as darkness engulfed the light.
