Breaking Point
As Magnus stabilized himself and attempted to control the intense forces pulling at him, his breath came in short spurts. The air was heavy, heavy, almost living as the fissure whirled with a sinister force. Every quake of the earth underneath him caused the artifact's radiance to pulse as his fingers tightened around it.
As he whispered to himself, "Come on, stay focused." Now he had gone too far to fail. Reaching the center of the rift, the source of its strength, was possible. However, there was a problem. Almost like a countdown, the ground was trembling more and more.
From the depths of the gap, a black figure emerged with a purposeful step as a low rumble filled the air. The figure's twisted silhouette was recognizable. The creature was an extension of the gap's evil force, an agent of the rift when Magnus last saw it.
"You really believe you can stop this?" the apparition asked in a scornful, icy voice. Magnus, you are not fighting this battle. It has never been a battle for you.
Magnus felt his heart pound. You are not correct. This is now over.
The rift's power caused the surrounding area to warp as the creature approached, its eyes glowing with an unsettling brightness. "It will not stop. It will not ever stop.
The figure screamed fearfully and sprang toward him, its shape morphing into a blur of blackness. Before Magnus could react, the ground exploded beneath his feet, sending him plummeting down the depths of the fissure.
The world blurred around Magnus as his body smashed downward, the wind screaming in his ears. He could not risk getting caught in the rift. He knew the repercussions would be disastrous.
Reaching out with the relic, he focused his thoughts and channeled its power. The energy surge rushed through him, pushing him in the direction of the chasm's edge. He was able to grasp a sharp granite ledge with a final, desperate push, driving his fingertips into the hard rock as he struggled to maintain his balance.
The impact of the rift was so great that it seemed to be crushing in on every inch of space surrounding him. Despite a terrible force's attempts to draw him in, he resisted. Not with him this near.
"You can not go away," the creature's taunting voice said, echoing from the depths.
Magnus clenched his jaw. “Observe me.”
When he managed to pull himself up, something considerably bigger moved in the rift. The world appeared to distort, and he sensed the split becoming more intense and enticing.
He found himself falling again, deeper into the abyss this time, as the ledge beneath his feet split.
Magnus felt time elongate as he fell farther. He could feel the rift's pull intensifying as its tendrils encircled him and twisted through his head. The relic he was holding blazed with a ferocious brilliance, seemingly resisting the energy of the rift.
He hit the ground hard, his body hurting from the tumble. The hit startled him for a moment, preventing him from moving. With his eyes acclimating to the faint brightness of the rift's heart, he carefully pushed himself up while the electricity in the air crackled about him.
The actual fissure was a massive, whirling whirlpool of dark energy, with a pulsing, evil light emanating from its center. It was alive in a manner that defied reason and logic.
"This is the end of it all," Magnus said, his voice raspy from the effort. Now that he was at the center of the rift, where its power sprang from, it would end here.
However, the air grew thicker as he moved forward. As though the rift were speaking directly to him, a voice resounded in his head and shadows appeared to move, flickering at the borders of his vision.
"You are too late, Magnus," it replied in a tone that was both icy and recognizable. "This world belongs to me."
Magnus felt his pulse increase as the rift's intensity threatened to overpower him.
A dark energy sprang at him, encircling his wrist and pulling him to the heart of the whirlpool.
Magnus resisted as the energy of the fissure drew him in, his heart pounding. Despite his best efforts to resist the attraction, he was unable to hold onto the item. The fissure seemed to distort reality itself, twisting the area around him, and it was stronger than he had expected.
The voice went on, its presence overwhelming, "You do not understand." "You can not beat me. The beginning and the end are me.
Magnus struggled through the dizzying feeling, concentrating on the item even when his eyesight became blurry. His voice was firm as he responded, "No." "You are incorrect."
Letting go of the artifact with all his strength, he directed the energy burst toward the tendril that held him. He felt a burst of power, and for a split second he believed he saw the fissure recoil, its shape flickering like a fading flame.
But then there was a low growl in the air, and the shadows around him started to move more quickly, yanking him in all directions.
The energy of the rift swelled once more, and Magnus felt himself losing control this time. Nothing remained to stop him as he was drawn faster and deeper.
Magnus's entire universe shook as the energy of the rift became stronger and threatened to engulf him. Although the power felt like it was tearing his body apart, he came to a realization despite the suffering. The fissure was a creature, a sentient being that flourished on dread and misery, rather than merely a physical force.
He needed to stop it. Now.
Magnus utilized all of his remaining energy to concentrate on the artifact and channel its power throughout his body. The energy in the fissure pushed back, as though it were attempting self-defense.
The voice yelled, its tone suddenly urgent, "You can't!" "You are too frail!"
Magnus clenched his jaw. "We will investigate that."
He let out one last shout, unleashing the artifact's full power, illuminating the room with a blinding light. His ears rang with the rift's cries as the light engulfed everything.
Magnus felt everything around him crumble—his body, his mind, everything starting to fall apart—just as the light peaked. Was this the end, or was something even more perilous about to happen?
