Chapter 126 ONE HUNDRED AND TWENTY-SIX
TESS
I stuttered ‘You mean…you ran into Jack?’
She nodded ‘Mmhhh. Believe me I was as shocked as you are right now. I really thought the universe would spare me the torture of seeing him again.’
I nearly bit my tongue ‘How did it happen?’
She nudged closer to me ‘So, I was just taking a walk. You know I told you about how messed up my mind has been’
I nodded ‘Yes you did and I told you not to drown yourself in it’
‘Yes, you did. You know, you should actually become a therapist right?’ she said sarcastically.
I groaned not liking the turn the conversation was heading to.
‘You can’t afford me if I take it seriously. Just be glad I’m doing it for free now’ I replied.
She grinned ‘I’m sure friends and family would always have good discount’
‘Anyway, back to the conversation. What happened next?’
‘I wasn’t looking where I was going so I bumped into him. I didn’t even know it was him until our eyes met and all hell broke loose. I walked away immediately, trying so hard to put enough distance between the both of us. Then, he ran after me’
My ears rang ‘He did?’
‘Yes. I was surprised and I kept asking him what he wants, and why he was running after me’
I shifted in my seat ‘And what did he say?’
‘He kept begging me that I should allow him to explain himself and blah blah blah’
My heart constricted in a very painful way, I couldn’t describe how I was feeling.
It can’t be jealousy, no way.
I’m just amazed that Jack left all of this information out when he came here this morning and just wanted to be all handsy with me.
I should have known not to give him a chance.
A leopard can never change its spots.
‘He begged you? Wow I’m….speechless’ I managed to say while looking at the corner where Jack was hidden and wishing I could just punch him in the mouth.
‘I was stunned as well, I kept pushing him away but he insisted that I gave him a chance to explain. It was exhausting, I never knew Jack could be that resilient’
‘Exactly my point, he wasn’t like that when you guys were dating.’
She clapped her hands excitedly ‘Right, you didn’t make this much attempt when we were still in our so called relationship, but now you suddenly have balls to run after me and ask me to give you a chance to explain’
‘So, what did you do next?’
‘I continued pushing him away’
‘As you should. You don’t even need to hear a word coming from his lying lips’ I added.
She nodded ‘I know but he was quite persistent so eventually, I had to give in’
My face hardened ‘You gave him a chance?’
She shook her head ‘I won’t really call it a chance, I just wanted to hear what he seriously wanted to tell me so badly’
I blinked ‘So, you listened to him?’
She nodded again ‘Yeah, I had to.’
I shifted in my seat again ‘What did he say he wanted to tell you?’
She sighed ‘He was just apologizing, saying how he messed up big time. How he was going through tough moments in his life….’
I frowned ‘What tough moments?’
‘He spoke about his mother. Apparently, she had cancer when we were still together but he didn’t want to tell me because he felt he would be dropping a huge bombshell on me.’
I rolled my eyes ‘That’s a massive amount of bullshit’
‘Oh I know and I told him that too. Then, he told me his mother died soon after our breakup and I felt really sorry for him.’
I crossed my legs.
Why haven’t Jack told me any of these things?
Doesn’t he trust me enough with information like this or does he just want to keep it bottled in?
I cast a quick glance at the place he was hiding and I didn’t just know how to feel.
One thing was certain though, whatever I feel for Jack isn’t what he feels for me.
‘He still doesn’t deserve your pity. Quite frankly, I don’t think you should believe a word he says.’
‘I know I shouldn’t but he looked quite genuine. I really felt sorry something for him.’
I was very angry, not at her but at that lying bastard Jack.
‘I don’t care how sorry he was. Don’t forget what he put you through, he cheated on you with someone else. His problems doesn’t have anything to do with the actions he took’
Shirley bowed her head, I took it as a click to continue.
‘He hurt you on several occasions, treated you like you were a piece of furniture even when you went above and beyond for him, to make him happy. He was never nice to you.’
Shirley ran her hand over her head ‘I know, I just….I’m confused. I don’t know how to feel…’
Silence.
Of course I was very angry with Jack but at the same time, I was still trying to convince Shirley to drain out any feelings she might suddenly have again for Jack because I was jealous even though I didn't want to admit it to myself.
‘I don’t even know what is going on with me. When we were still talking, something happened.’
My eyes widened ‘What…what happened?’
She swallowed.
My heart started pounding in excitement, whatever she has to say can’t be good.
‘While we were still talking, a moment came….we kind of aligned and….I don’t know who leaned in first but….we kissed’
That last line was like a ticking bomb.
My mouth fell open.
I was speechless, I didn’t know what to say.
Jack kissed her and then came over here to kiss me too?
I feel like such a moron, I feel used.
‘He kissed you?’ I asked, my mouth quivering a little.
She nodded ‘Yeah….’
The next thing we heard was a loud sound of something falling.
I froze, the sound came exactly from where Jack was hiding.
Shirley stood up curiously looking at the spot ‘What was that?’
I swallowed ‘Nothing….’
‘Don’t tell me it’s nothing. We both heard that loud sound, do you have a rat in this house?’
I scratched my head ‘Maybe one stray rat found it’s way into my house’
